Turn off pet nameplates option
You can turn off name plates for all AI in the settings.

What? How?
I’m pretty sure it affects the Necro as well.
Turning off nameplates for AI (Minions and Illusions) would be isanely useful.

Don’t worry, he may be able to take down 20% of your hp before you target him but once you do you will take down 100% of his hp.

This doesn’t turn off pet nameplates, just makes it so they’re not displayed at all times as far as I know.

Unless you target the pet no nameplate will be displayed which is what OP was asking about.
More than just target I think, at least that seems to be the way it works for me when I turn it on. When somethings within a certain range they all seem to pop up, or if my mouse cursor is near them. I do this occasionally if there’s multiple mesmers on a team (It does get really confusing with just two of them plus six illusions, especially when they’re both asura) and it does help, but it doesn’t exactly work as you’re advertising it. Usually if there are no ‘pet’ classes around I’ll usually just leave the plates off entirely as I don’t like the extra clutter.

If you don’t have a target the closest enemy too you will have its name displayed.
