The amount of CC out there is nothing short of ridiculous, people being toss around like ragdolls. The amount of sheer condition spamming is just as bad as the huge amounts of condition removal. There is so much boons out there yet so many of it feels like it has little to no impact.

I was hoping to join the development team myself and redesign a lot of mechanics from the ground up to create a healthy combat system. For fun I challenged myself to redesign combat with a more impactful and with dynamics in mind. I’m reaching 40 pages and I am not even done with 1 class.

You got a lot of work ahead of you.

Erik and the rest of the PvP team focus on the infrastructure that drives PvP (maps, leagues, matchmaking, reward tracks, etc). We have a separate team that handles balance from a more holistic perspective (keeping PvP, WvW, and PvE in mind).

The good news is that we’ll be sharing some of the details of our next balance update with you as soon as next week. Stay tuned.

Raids need a redesign, if you nerf damage to much raids become unbeatable. That’s not healthy PvE in my opinion.

You’re ignoring the fact the achievements need to be unlocked first before they can be worked on and progress made before unlocking them doesn’t count. So what you are suggesting is impossible.

And you should learn to just look at stuff in-game instead of writing random things on the forum.

You just have to cross a grand total of 10 divisions to complete all the thresholds part of the Ascension achievements.

As soon as the first one is done (i.e.: cross 1 division from amber to emerald), you complete the Part I achie and the Part II achie is available for completion, even if you didn’t finish the rest of Part I.

Same goes for Part II and Part III.

It wasn’t that hard, really.

I know but im talking bout the League Elite cross 4 divisions. Im at saphire now and crossed 2 divisions but only have half of that achievement so I thought it was cross 2 divisions twice. Cross 3 divisions 3 times. Cross 4 divsions four times.

Badges stay until the next season starts. So enjoy your badge during the current season and the time between seasons, but once the new season starts all badges will be reset.

ANET really needs to rethink this entire system. I don’t want to see PvP rank outside of heart of the mists. Make it more content specific:

1. In hearts of the mists, show PvP level
2. In PvE, show the mastery level
3. In WvW, show the WvW rank

I don’t care about someone’s PvP rank when I am in WvW and it is just screen clutter.

Exactly. I don’t even bother with WvW currently because I feel like a second class citizen to the esport crowd there. And yes I can turn off names, but why should I, when those tags have nothing to do with your standing in WvW and have no bearing on PvE whatsoever.

I played WvW for 2.5 years and gained a descent rank even before EotM, why wasn’t my rank displayed in WvW to allies during the WvW seasons? Seems to me your priorities are a bit skewed currently. I do understand you wanted the free advertisement that the tags offered, but I wonder if the WvW crowd will get the same treatment when and if there is another season.

I’m honestly really happy about these changes.

However, I hope that in-game balances will be happening soon. There’s so much CC now that if you get trapped in one, you’re bound to be stuck in it. Before, there weren’t as many CC abilities and no (to my knowledge) pulsed stuns The pulsed stuns are the hardest to deal with since stun breaking only helps with one of the pulses.

The other big problem I have is with how strong DragonHunters, and Revenants are. It reminds me of when Zerk Guardians were a thing. They had strong damage and the ability to block most attacks. However, now, DragonHunters have unseeable one-hit KO traps that can even be placed under you (because that’s how traps work apparently), the longest ranged weapon in the game, and some additional CC.

Revenants are similar with their “Unrelenting Assault” which forces you to use your endurance dodging while they evade for 2 seconds (on a short cooldown), two ways to get 3-second invincibility while healing, and two ways to get 3-seconds of changing all damage received to health healed. Even their skill 1 while downed is too strong. Causing a slow each hit? What other skill 1 when downed harms enemies as much as that?

There are a lot of other balancing changes needed, but those are the biggest problems I see.

You don’t need to cross all 4 division in 1 season. If for example you are capped at sapphire (3/4) you can go from Amber to Emerald next season to make it (4/4). They clarified this on reddit.

Another note: We’re making some changes to allow high division players to get matches faster to help combat the long queue times.

I’d say that this is probably the biggest thing that I’m concerned about in moving towards a more division-based matchmaking system. When I was playing very early on in the season, I managed to advance to Sapphire very quickly while most people hadn’t played as much and were still in Amber/Emerald. At the point where I was no longer seemingly getting matched up with Emerald 1 players, my queue times skyrocketed, making the entire experience really dull. The rare matches I was seeing were often against teams made up of ESL players, who I was not on the same level as, skill-wise. It made the early season very frustrating waiting for players around my own skill level to work their way up to a similar division ranking.

Maybe you hate it, but I and many others enjoy the system. It needs some polishing which will happen between seasons but the core idea is great IMO.

These are all good questions.

1. No, you do not have to reach Legendary division to complete the Ascension backpiece. Although doing so will speed up your ability to complete it significantly.

2. Your achievements for Year of the Ascension will not reset at the end of each season, but they will only be available until the achievement collection is removed roughly a year after it became available.

3. Yes, if you are currently stuck in a division and can’t climb out (say Sapphire for Season 1) and your progress in Year of the Ascension II is 1/2, then moving from Amber to Emerald in Season 2 will progress this achievement to 2/2 and complete it.

On another note, I’m going to be a dissenting viewpoint. I do not see Solo/Team Queue separation as a priority – or even necessarily sensible. Yes, I think we’ve all been there now where we’ve been stomped majorly in a match and it’s transpired that it was five people solo queued on one side against a full premade team on the other. I don’t see that as a problem with how people queue up so much as it’s potentially a problem with the matchmaking system.

Generally, what I’ve noticed, is that the system will try to pair up similar numbers of partied people on each team – if one team has a duo, the other team more often than not will have a duo or maybe a trio. Unfortunately, there aren’t always the right groups of certain numbers sitting around queued ready to be matched up in even matches. And, when it comes down to it, 5-man teams do need people to play against, just like everyone else. Hence, I’m assuming, at a certain point, the system says “screw it” and throws together whatever it can find in the ranges it’s been given to work with.

Rather than the potential pit-falls of splitting the queues, not to mention raising the overall queue times, I think the best way of dealing with this would be to have 4-man and 5-man parties treated slightly differently when it comes to matchmaking, ergo, in the new system, if there’s another 4-man or 5-man group also queued, but who would be slightly out of the division range, they’re paired together in a match anyway.

In that respect, I don’t think this is a problem that should be looked at from the perspective of “sometimes I get matched up against premades, the system is completely broken, split the queue types”, but instead from the idea that, largely in my experience, the system works very hard to match up similar sized numbers of partied people and that should be tweaked to give that slightly more importance over other matchmaking concerns when you’re talking about full or nearly full parties. I think we can safely justify this as, generally, parties of four people or more are going to be set up with complementary classes and builds and will often be using VOIP coordination, which represents a greater advantage than simply being a decent individual player in a similar division.

Dont know why ppl keep saying low mmr or casual players need fixes for the backpiece or achievements requiring them to move up “x” number of divisions. Altho this system doesn’t do this, divisions should reflect player skill or mmr. At the moment this isn’t the case with ppl farming stronghold, exploits with the ambers/smurfs and other methods. But achieving the backpiece should require work and commitment. whether that be grinding out the matches or getting better and learning strategies and gameplay mechanics.

For example, I play with my friends who are all platinum and diamonds in league of legends. I do fairly well with them and if i were to play ranked and grind out the season would most likely be in gold division. But no matter how many games i grind out i wont make it to challenger division without commitment to the game and learning the gameplay mechanics, counters, and rotations.

It would be great if the divisions better reflected ur skill level or mmr such as making it harder for ppl to progress out of amber-sapphire since as it stands ruby is the new amber division. I look forward to the win streaks and other changes coming in, but the pip system will need a lot of work as it is very inconsistent. Would also like to see some fixes to the DC problem as i have lost 2 pips many times while having to play 4v5.

Well the most straightforward way to “deal with” that strategic advantage parties of “four or more” often have is simply to give them their own queue. I feel it’s common sense, but beyond my opinion. The split of a team queue and solo queue is something you find in EVERY SUCCESSFUL SPVP GAME. LoL, DOTA2, Heros of the Storm, Smite, etc….

The only way to truly prevent VOIP communication and team tactic is to provide a true solo queue that guarantees you will never face a full team or even a duo. That’s the only way to give solo queue players an even playing field and help insure those competing in teams that other teams haven’t gotten free wins off non-premades.

Mixing the two queues completely destroys the integrity of the system. You would not have an NFL “ranked” season game where New England Patriots went up against element random NFL players pulled from the top 20 NFL teams and given no time whatsoever pre game to really work out plays, coordination, etc… I know some people think “that would be awesome to see”. Perhaps it would for the novelty, but the integrity of the match wouldn’t be there. There would be no glory in the win because of the team advantages.

The problem with GW2 sPvP is that our community prefers the novelty over the integrity (or at the developers assume we do). If they honestly took ranked pvp seriously they would understand why we the players, we the spectators need for ArenaNet to respect the integrity of the game as much as we do. They do not. As long as solo and team queues are mixed there is no integrity in the rank. The other things they’ve mentioned are good ideas, but if we aren’t given a separate solo and team queue and given the ability to go do other things outside PvP lobby while we wait all the other changes they make are absolutely pointless, because it circles back to the integrity lost with the mix queue. It’s just rational.

Regarding balance. Will save any comments until after a new meta emerges post balance, but these changes will be coming from the same staff that neglected to see the importance of leaving the Elite Specs out of ranked this season until they could balance them and also some of the same staff who it took three years to get the pre-HoT pvp meta into the really great place it was at before they completely destroyed it. Why should we give them the benefit of the doubt? For the sake of balance, many of the Elite Specs are as much work to balance a new professions. When you factor in the new pvp weapon and armor mods that can be applied to the non-Elite specs, you have a very complex system that will likely take years to get back to where it was before.

Should they ban Elite Specs from PvP? No. But if they respected the integrity of the game they would have looked at their own history and what it took to balance the old meta and been able to estimate that there were serious balance problems. You can let people PvP with new & shinny Elite Specs and professions but locking them out of ranked for 3-6 months would be appropriate to give them time to break in and for initial balancing to really set in. People will disagree with me. I think most GW2 sPvP players value the novelty aspect of the game over taking it serious. This is what you get when you have a really great sPvP game (great from mechanical stand point) baked into a very non PvP focused game. It’s not for the serious pvp player and never will be. They will always cater to the majority spending money in the cash shop. They have an obligation to the NCSoft share holders to cater to those players over delivering the highest level of integrity in these matches.

this is quite funny reading from the beginning since there was no “attacking” being done in the first place, he merely pointed out his opinion as well as others that feel the same way that the game is still fun. in any case the only one that was being hostile was you. TBH I’ve noticed less premades playing than before leagues. The new system next season should take care of that anyway.

Looking over my last 10 matches 3 were less than 25 point difference and 4 were greater than 200. 50% win and gained 5 pips. That suggests some sort of functioning matchmaking system. It took 180 games to get to ruby (not including the first 20 games where I really sucked) and a quite a few of those were trying different professions and builds. So about 2.7 games per pip. That’s reasonable yeh? (bug report: censor reads “isn’t [space] it?” as “isn [part of the female anatomy]”)

Thx 4 letting us know. Herr my 2 cents from a casual point of view:

Pls bring back soloqueue, premades have always the advantage.

Pls let us queue from outside hearts of the mist, it is so boring to have nothing to do for a couple of minutes.

And the bigest wish: Pls change so per game you can only loose one pip. After I entered Ruby the fun was gone because of the salty attidude of many players. It is simply frustrating to loose 2 Pips when players start pickering bevor the game even starts and then refuse to play with each other, or the quit midterm (even with lead of 100 points no kidding) because the group doesnt play the way they wanted, or simply state they are tired of carying " noobs" or they dc. So let the players get 2 Pips if they perform really well but dont punish them because most of the time it isnt their fault.

Also pls let me hide my league badge. There should be a possibility to show it if the player wants that but it shoudnt be forced. On a side node Im much more interested in the MMR than the league – so why not show that?

this is unfortunate to me on so many levels.

1- We cant come up with a better system for team ques? For instance i play with 3-4 other people and all of us are of different skill levels and most of us have over 10 k Ap points.

2- The match making is still horrible for divisions and rankings. These 2 things still have no meaning. If really bad players are playing really bad players to get to ruby how is that the same as someone like helseth who was stuck in emerald while many lesser players got to ruby in the same time.

3- Win streaks only helps those with good premades. Yeah i can see this being great already. The simply fact im facing legendary premades back 2 back 2 back 2 back and now they get to farm me on team speak while i solo que. Just great, yeah i cant see anything wrong with this at all.

The point confusion i like but why cant we get simply things that the vast majority of the community wants. Our MMR and a legit leaderboard. How about rewards based on skill level of play instead of grinding. Im so confused on how you can call something “League” but theres no actual league.

If your the best players in the game guess what you dont grow threw a tournament/season/ random mix of players. You right out the box have to play the other best players. Seriously it be like being in the NBA and only having to play the Golden state Warriors and Spurs every game while some dude on the 76ers gets to talk smack because hes in ruby first.

Now if we could please have a real solo queue.

I have never even duo queued and the main reason why I don’t play more spvp is that I am sick and tired of having to play against partial premades (2-3 in same party in opposing team is typical).

If your the best players in the game guess what you dont grow threw a tournament/season/ random mix of players. You right out the box have to play the other best players. Seriously it be like being in the NBA and only having to play the Golden state Warriors and Spurs every game while some dude on the 76ers gets to talk smack because hes in ruby first.

Not at all I had to completely change my style of playing and profession. I was losing every game. I also realised through simple mathematics that if I played for long periods I’d lose so much I couldn’t progress like Helseth. This I put to two factors the amount of concentration required and the daily reset of the MMR. I just realised long before he did that grinding your way through tiers just left me disheartened. This is why I’ve played relatively few games and am only just now at ruby.

Two things, both somewhat interrelated to each other.
1) Every game you mentioned there has PvP as its sole purpose. PvP is only one aspect of GW2 and, as much as I know everyone goes on about “lulz, will never be an eSport”, it’s more something that came up as a marketing idea rather than them going “we want to be a serious eSport game”. Particularly, at the point where you still have a strong B2P element if you want to seriously PvP (HoT basically being mandatory), GW2 cannot and should not be viewed in the same way as serious, mainstream F2P eSport games.

2) More pertinently, GW2’s PvP doesn’t even nearly have the same population as those games. Realistically, if there was the population there to support it, this would already have been announced as coming. My primary thrust in saying that separating the queues out is exactly the same reason why this hasn’t happened yet. If we’ve already got players often waiting 5-10 minutes (and well-documented instances of some players waiting well over an hour), increasing the queue times isn’t going to encourage people to play PvP in GW2, and will lead to decreasing participation.

This is why I suggest that the best way of handling this is to look at increasing the incidence of parties playing against each other (whilst not making it exclusive) – it actually has the knock-on effect of lowering their queue times as well, encouraging more people to queue up and queue up as a team, lessening the impact on players who are solo queueing in the first place.

So… if a top end player queues with 4 beginners, the entire team will be matched as if its a top end team? And nobody sees issues when doing it like this?

Youll basicly see super uneven matchups and kitten pip gain and losses due to this. You stopped the old MMR abuse, but create another problem to replace that abuse.

Top end player shouldn’t join ranked with beginners they can go unranked or hotjoin if they want to party. And let everyone progress in ranked where they belong to. Boosting shouldn’t be allowed. The system will be a lot better.

Don’t forget to buff unused weapons/specs (balancing shouldn’t be limited to nerfing the most popular builds.)
Some of these are :
—Thief: S/D, D/D, S/P
—Warrior: Offhand mace and axe
—Necro: focus
—Mesmer: focus

….and most professions have traits that are never taken like thief condi traits.
Berserk for warriors also ruins good burst skills like combustive shot and flurry into uselessness

Where is SoloQ? If you really cared about representing a players skill level then leagues / pip gain would be soloQ only. You do nothing about Premades being able to farm pugs and the general imbalances of matchmaking in terms of class stacking and team composition.

It’s absoultely hypocritical to claim that these leagues represent any kind of skill level when you’re able to team up and climb higher than your actual skill level. Hell the amount of bad players in Diamond and Legendary is ridiculous. 50% of them probably wouldn’t make it out of Emerald or Saphirre when they had to soloQ.

Solo quing should be rewarded with no pip loss at 300 points or at least shouldn’t be punished like it is now. Theres absolutely ZERO incentive to play solo, unless your a masochist like I am. As long as this issue isn’t adressed the leagues will remain trash and just a grind fest.

Please kittening read this post for once.

Wow thanks Gaile! It’s so nice to know you guys are really going to make such amazing changes for the upcoming season! Hopefully Season 2 will just be a mess and not a completely absurd disaster like Season 1 is! So pumped!

Also I have an idea, maybe you could do something like test it out before you release it onto the public servers? Like a “play test” (or you could call it something else). I’ve heard real companies like Blizzard and EA do something like that, so maybe ArenaNet could try and do it too? Cool!

Win Streaks

Since the new matchmaking changes may make matches more volatile at the very beginning of the season (since everyone will be starting in the same division), we’re also planning to introduce a “Win Streak System” into PvP Leagues that will help more skilled players climb through early league divisions and get them into the divisions that they belong. On your third consecutive win (and for every win afterward), you’ll automatically earn extra league points toward your division progress for as long as you can keep the streak going. But keep in mind that a loss while on a win streak will reset your win streak status back to zero, and you’ll need to start another win streak in order to begin gaining extra points again.

Win streaks are exactly what is wrong with the current system, and you guys are doubling down on it rather than pulling back. You should be removing the impact of win streaks, not making them more important to get. Don’t you understand how difficult win streaks are to achieve when you might be paired with great players against a terrible team one match, and then with terrible players against a great team the next? It’s hard enough to win the match you’re in, without having to worry about winning several consecutive matches. My average experience is to win no more than 1-2 games in a row, then 1-2 losses, and repeat, unless I duo-queue.

Overall, the matchmaking thing might be positive, might be negative, we’ll have to see, but the other changes just look to be making a bad system even worse, not better.

2. Your achievements for Year of the Ascension will not reset at the end of each season, but they will only be available until the achievement collection is removed roughly a year after it became available.

3. Yes, if you are currently stuck in a division and can’t climb out (say Sapphire for Season 1) and your progress in Year of the Ascension II is 1/2, then moving from Amber to Emerald in Season 2 will progress this achievement to 2/2 and complete it.

If a player spends dozens of hours working towards the Legendary Wings, and in the final PvP season they aren’t able to complete the final achievement tree before the season ends, will all of their effort have been a complete waste, causing them to rage-quit the game? Assume for the purpose of the example that the player in question does not enjoy PvP at all, but wants to have the wings for PvE, where you can actually glide. I’m just asking because if you don’t have a contingency in place now, you’re going to want to be working on one. Don’t let 2017 roll around and expect “oops, we’ll work on something” to keep players in the game.

Most random guild teams will consist of mixed division players. Which will basicly be an easy pip farm for any regular pvp team. Without using extremes and without taking classes/setups in to consideration ill put this in an example.

Team A: mixed casual guild group with a mix of 3 sapphires, 1 ruby and 1 diamond player.
Team B: set team that plays toghether with 5 diamond level players.

The system will see them as equal. Result = uneven matchup and easy pip gain for team B.

The only fair system is a system like we see in wow. Based on individual mmr /div vs the opposing teams mmr/div.

This is the lazy way out.
