Definitely Mesmers > Guardians > Rangers.

Mesmers can kite you around LOS while their phantasm do the work for them. They will then stealth if you actually are able to start doing damage to them Shatter mesmers take a bit more skill but are still just as powerful. Blurred Frenzy makes pistol whip look horrible because not only does it do a lot of damage but the mesmer is completely immune while using it and can pivot in place to follow you if you move around the mesmer. So if you get caught in the immobilize from illusionary leap without an immobilize break, prepare to have over half your health taken away in one combo.

Just yesterday I decided to try guardian. I had a guildmate give me a build that he wanted to test out. I then go into a game and realized just how faceroll guardian is. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing yet I was destroying other players without regards to what I doing or where I was standing. I realized that guardian has so many passives that basically do the work for the player and this in combination with how powerful the passives were allowed me to run into zergs and destroy people.

Not sure why there aren’t a lot of complaints about rangers. They are extremely powerful because they have the most powerful ability in the game: crossfire. Basically what a power shortbow ranger will do is spam crossfire and quickness from their utility from pet swap. If you actually start to do damage do him he will use “protect me” to mitigate damage. If you are somehow not down by this point, he will use signet of stone for even more invulnerability. But basically, a shortbow ranger’s crossfire spam can take someone down 100 to 0 in around 5 seconds. And this is from max range.

Mesmer, Thief, Guardian. But not by as much of a margin as most people exaggerate.

mesmers aren’t unkillable sometimes they drive you mad but their strenght is 60% player located, if you are able to distinguish who is the real one their survivality isn’t that high. Of course if you run killing illusions it can become frustrating, it happens to me sometimes too nobody is saved.

Theifs Guardians and Mesmers in particular order are definately tops. Its all you see in SPVP now.

I play a Staff Ele for healing/CC/damage mitigation but have played all the classes in SPVP. Tons of fun. Hard to beat a team with a good Staff Support Ele locking down areas with CC, and healing and giving out bubble auras to everyone constantly. DPS just isnt there with the Ele unless you sacrifice all your health, and then you will just get facerolled and one shotted.

If i were u i would just try all of the classes and see which one u like. you only have to be lvl 2 to unlock spvp.
Pick what fits your playstyle. Me I prefer ranged dps or heals cause thats what ive always played before. dont like melee classes myself much so even though theifs and gaurds are at the top, i prefer to play a more complex class that fits my style

you’re right but you can’t have all the things you mention, well you can but choosing the right weapon combination and skills, normal mesmers don’t use all of this unless they are so lame. This skills are all defensive if they beat you is because you are too ofensive, a thief that can kill you in a glimpse is useless against a mesmer of this kind because they combo is easily countered but i swear you that a necro, not even a skilled one kitten this kind of mesmer.

Key is balance i play mesmer, thief and elementalist and the builds that are making me perform better as the ones that don’t make me excell in any situation but at the same time enable me to go offensive or totally defensive when needed.

this thread is becoming more about tactics and favoritism and not why they are so over powered. a class isn’t overpowered if a good player uses their skills right and has premediatated abilities built from experience. I still feel the game is far too new to decide if something is overpowered yet.

Competitive players have been testing tournament PvP in this game for close to half a year now. There’s been plenty of time to determine what is and is not overpowered. Like I said, ANet are more aware than people think about class balance issues, and will take measures they deem appropriate.

The ridiculous notion that only bad players don’t understand that release day was the day that all classes were magically balanced and everything is now in a perfect state of blissful equilibrium and should never be changed is patently absurd.

There’s no such thing as a perfectly balanced asymmetrical gameplay system. Games like these will always be a work in progress, and certain classes will always have some objective advantage over others, however slight. To suggest otherwise is just silly.

The key is to remain as impartial as possible, do your best to find counters to things which seem overpowered before complaining about them, and to be as constructive and objective as possible when suggesting improvements to perceived imbalance.

Never said things where perfect, just that they aren’t as bad as everyone is saying they are. And a lot of the things people complain about on the forums aren’t even things that matter or are the “op” problems. This topic is about the “best” classes in spvp the problem with this is every ones saying gaurdians mesmer and thief if those where the only 3 classes used in a teams structure they wouldn’t get very far now would they?
There is no “best” class because if one person said an awnser to it then it is automatically an opinion not a fact, the fact is everything has a role to play and nothing is “OP” there may be small tweaks to fix later down the road but nothing to an extent that it would drastically effect the game or that couldn’t be countered in some shape way or form. The only question it balls down to is if it’s to difficult to counter how bad would the change have to be and how would it effect the game. These are the questions you ask about something when you believe or suspect it to be overpowered.

Guardian, Mesmer, Thief, maybe.

I rank based on utility, for the most part. A lot of people will just look at a damage value or a health number and freak out based on that, but what your skills DO is way more important, as that determines the skill ceiling for your class (not your armor rating or health pool). Guardians are the best in this dept, hands down. No argument. Mesmers can be very problematic, as well. Thieves can make certain builds that are more about whether they know how to play, and negate much of any say you have in the matter. They have a lot less versatility than Mesmers or Guardians, though.

Warriors are pretty versatile but have a low skill ceiling, as they have some of the worst build utility in the game. Most of their traits are just number modifiers, and their skills are usually just closers or more boons and bonuses abilities. They aren’t going to use their skills in more ways than one, which can make them very easy to counter, outthink and anticipate for an equally experienced player. So, while you may see them listed, it’s usually just because “omg guys they’re so strong and have high hp and armor.” They’re actually fairly easy kills in most circumstances, barring one or two very, very specialized builds that are either easy to counter if you see them coming or do very little damage in the process of being very annoying (disruption builds.)

The only other fringe class I might include is Engineer, although just because of the game mode sPvP is predicated upon. If the game was just kill or be killed, I don’t think you’d ever see them on the list.

From what I’ve seen 1 Guardian and 1 Mesmer seems to be mandatory for tPvP matches right now. As Necros get slowly fixed they seem to be taking their place amongst the trifecta of “must haves” since their condition control along with Mesmer’s Null Field is incredibly potent and not comparably available through other class builds so far. Bunker Engi and Bunker Staff Ele fit well into that set up too. Which reminds me…

A stronger trend than mere class selection that I have noticed is the overwhelming amount of bunker/condition specs. It’s not countered by burst at the moment, but through condition dmg (which is this games form of “steady dmg” it would seem) which is in large part the primary source of dmg in most bunker builds. So for the time being you counter bunker builds with a bunker build of your own and better/more condition control. Unless you’re a Mesmer. Then you just spec glass cannon, stand back, and fling AI and AAs around and drop a Time Warp or Null Field from time to time.

So yeah, bunker down or play a mesmer, I guess. Which I agree with Khenzy 100%. Mesmer is head and shoulders above every other class in PvP atm for all the reasons he stated. I feel so dirty when I play one but you can’t argue with the success rate.

I love how those who don’t play mesmer as a main, seem to know exactly how to play the class and what they do exactly.

Most times when people think I’m hiding back and just chucking AI’s at them, I’m really one of the ‘clones’ they think are fake, as Mesmer’s Damage actually drops significantly if they’re not doing damage themselves. The harassement behind closed doors is typically to keep pressure until the Mesmer can recover or reach into range. (Most players are trying to LoS ME, not the other way around.)

Issues about continual Regen and Protect: This Protect/Regen effect, or more specifically the Regen effect that causes protect to occur, is limited by phantasm range. If the Mesmer is being granted with this, it mean’s hes near his phantasems aka, vulernable.

Again, there are only two Phantasems that appear in a direction associated to the enemy, iBerserker, and iWarden, and one of them is terrible for s/tPvP. All others spawn in relation to the Mesmer casting it, and will only attack once they’re in range of the opponent (or dissipate if they walk out of the Mesmer’s maximum control range.)

As stated ad nasuem, AoE destroys Phantasms and Clones easily, and gut a lot of the Mesmer’s damage an utility doing so. This makes Bunker Engineers, Necros, and Elementalists powerful against them.

Players who ‘feel dirty’ playing Mesmer should find better opponents.

cry more about bunker guards. Same kitten can eb said for Warriors who bunker.. Jesus you people need to learn to play the class. A bunker can be beat easily. Just roll 2 over beat kitten out of him and roll on. If Anet listened to people on these forums the game would go to WOW kitten in a matter of months. I am glad they are not.. Learn to play and how to counter b4 you say mesmer thief guards are op.. For the love of god grow up and learn to counter them. I have over 450hrs logged into SPvP/TPvp alone as I do not play PvE and i can tell you they are easy to coutner if done right.

Edit: I should stop drinking :P
U where making an observation of the sucky path of meele phantasm , and missread :P

True , they might have 3k hp , but its far from terible :P
They can benefit from the onwer crit . So with bersker Neck + 30 points into presision + 15% increased clone damage + all clones get fury = 70% chance to crit for 3500 (tested on the heavy golems) :P
3500 × 2 phantashm = 7k hp = 1/3 of ur hp :P
While if u consetrate on killing the clones first , the real Mesmer will keep attacking u and his hp will be higher than ur all the time :P

But i admit , i should equip my grnade kit to demolish them :P
My problem isnt their 3500 damage phantasm not their Chaos clones casting burn most of their time , but their humogous HP for be a cloth-ranged caster :P

i would say 4…

thief, guardian, engineer and mesmer…

but in fact, mesmer is here only because many ppl dont know how to counter illusions, so if it should be 3, i would remove probably him

btw whats wrong with mesmers dmg and survivability? are you playing mesmer? i do and my phantasms definitely dont attack for 3500 dmg, maybe if they go full power and precision line? or phantasm spec? im not sure anyway, mesmer have +-15k hp default, ele have +-10k and necro have +-18k, now talk about mesmer having too much hp as cloth prof…

Necros dont have the eascape mechanics of a Mesmer + Thief :P
I am saying either bring down their hp to the elementalist + thiefs hp , or town down phantasm spec burst and give them more conditions , instead of direct burst :P

I am up for reducing their hp :P
Less hp (13k hp with phantasm build + berseker neck) = more damage + less survibility , like the rest of the suicidal builds

If you’re looking to play the most OP class, you’re going to be sorely disappointed when it gets adjusted (balanced, nerfed, whatever you want to call it) and then you’re stuck playing a class you may or may not enjoy because it was the “best” when you started playing it.

There is a developer sticky that even says they’re “looking at” Mesmers, bunker Guardians, and support (tank/heal type) Elementalists.

My suggestion would be to play whatever class you enjoy, OP or not.
