What is the Armor / Toughness formula?
Double your armor means you’ll receive half the damage.
So if someone hits you for 1.000 damage @2600 armor, they would only hit you for 500 damage @5200 armor.
armor*2 => damage / 2
2600*1,27=3302 => damage / 1,27
So if someone hits you for 1.000 damage @2600 armor, they would only hit you for 787 damage @3300 armor.
In words: You increase your armor by 27%, therefore you opponents hit you for 27% less.
3302*1,575=5200,65 => damage / 1,575
So if someone hits you for 787 damage @3302 armor, they would only hit you for ~500 @5200 armor.

Damage reduction from armor has diminishing returns. At low armor values, adding toughness gets you a significant increase in damage reduction. At higher armor values, you’re better off investing in other stats (vitality and sometimes healing power) in order to boost effective HP.
Even then, passive defensive stats aren’t going to keep you alive forever. Improving your positioning and use of active defenses (dodges, etc) will allow you to live much longer.
So if someone hits you for 1.000 damage @2600 armor, they would only hit you for 787 damage @3300 armor.
In words: You increase your armor by 27%, therefore you opponents hit you for 27% less.
Actually your opponents hit you for 21.3% less.
