My theory: Hubris

Some kid(s) who wanted to prove they were smart and creative and could make a good game all on their own without input from others.

And so they didn’t do what GW1 had proven worked, because that wouldn’t prove they were uniquely genius.

You’re not the only one along this line of thinking. Most people probably realize Anet is very prideful after 2 years in GW2.

What’s wrong ?
All what they said up + 1 thing
go pvp panel, look game browser, search “farm” …
They bashed the only specific reward from pvp aka emote/rank … Imo they can do update 1 more thing before remove pvp from gw² : buy rank from gems .
Will be faster and less hypocrite

I honestly thing that a larger PvP mode could be a good change for GW2, but it would absolutely have to require groups to split up to take care of objectives. Too much of the playerbase has a zerg mentality as it is.

1. Balance – This is the biggest issue. It takes the balance team forever to make changes (seriously, what do they do all day that is takes 5-6 months to release balance updates). eSports have much more frequent changes. The issue with GW2 is that oftentimes something is broken and people get frustrated some stop playing PvP. The balance team is the weak point here.
2. Game modes – Conquest is fun to play, but boring to watch. They need a new game mode and put the focus on that.

Agree!

i am pretty sure devs are well aware why pvp in this game failed and so unpopular

the question is rather why did it happen and why nothing was improved? i am guessing the answer is money and i don’t think any of our feedback would convince them to invest more into pvp development simply because pve and gem store items for pve are more profitable

Players.

  • When I see our “close holder” go far and die each match…
  • When I see our war-hambow 1v1 an elementalist far away…
  • When I see our thief focusing the wrong target…
  • When I see our elementalist playing like Rambo mid and then die…
  • When I see our necro standing mid casting like a turret while the enemy team is literally focusing on him..
  • When I see our only guardian with GS…
  • When I see our mesmer wandering…

I think that pvp is not for “everyone”.

Now the real question imho should be:
How the community can improve their skills?

Sadly, for me the answer is ELITISM. Not discrimination.

At the most basic level spvp failed because GW2 is a PVE game. When you have 100+ devs working on pve and 3 working on PvP its not hard to figure out why spvp sucks and takes years to implement basic level features.

GW2 shows that you can’t throw a small portion of your resources at PvP and ‘hope’ the game will take off. A competitive game will only work if it is designed from the ground up for a primarily pvp audience (moba, RTS, FPS, fighting games).

GW1 was ahead of its time, and turned out to be a fluke. Why bother going through all the challenges of building a sport when you can easily make money through microtransactions / RMT /Cash Shop / Gems / Gold to casual pve players.

GW1 pvp was massively more successful than gw2 pvp currently is. It was an actual esport and had a pretty big community. You can find pvp finals videos on youtube with 300k views. I don’t know what the twitch stream numbers were like.

That was the amazing thing about it: Twitch didn’t even exist in those days, Youtube had only just started up in the same year GW1 was released, live streaming of events was practically unheard of, and the only popular e-sports games were FPSs and fighting games. Anet was the ballsiest company in the frigging universe back then: they weren’t trying to establish their game as an e-sport, they were trying to establish e-sports! AND build the whole infrastructure up themselves from the ground up! 300k views on youtube? I guarantee you that’s only a fraction of the amount of views games got on the in-game observer mode (introduced 8 months after launch – we still can’t view tournament matches in-game 24 months after launch in GW2!). They were big events that bound the community together, and even people who almost never played GvG would watch them, just to see what the pinnacle of the game looked like!

I honestly don’t know how Anet lost their edge like this, why they turned their back on everything that made GW1 great (I’m not talking just about gameplay style, but basic features like guild ladders, multiple gametypes, observer mode, frequent balance patches, and all sorts of things!). A lot of the people who were in charge of those aspects of GW1 still work there, so I can only assume there was a change of management philosophy and company focus.

Anet is too slow to balance! 1 patch every half year! That’s just thuper insane in the membrane! Anet wants to make everything perfect! Well newflash frands! You can’t balance perfectly! It can only be good! And everything good can then be made better! And then you keep making it better! Biweekly! Even monthly! Hell at this point Vee Wee will even take a patch every 2 months! But twice per year! Bad! So bad! So very bad!

Motherflippin’ yeah!

What went wrong with GW2 PvP? Anet suits lol

They decided not to focus on PvP at all (which is what GW1 so popular and amazing amongst the MMO pvp community)

This is what we are stuck with now, 2 years and it still feels like beta lol.

You can probably count the number of anet’s employees actually working on PvP with 1 hand lol… Not blaming the PvP devs here at all, just the suits in charge of their resource allocation…

Anet simply has not put a true effort into PvP (in terms of resources), thats the bottom line.

That’s the root cause of all the other issues everyone is talking about such as slow balancing and no new pvp modes.

You have to fix the root cause. Otherwise, you are stuck with what we currently have, which is some small bandaid fixes that just slows down the eventually death of PvP..

Oh and for the love of god, get rid of this e-sports mentality. This is an MMORPG , trying to fit into e-sports that is DOMINANTLY owned by MOBA/RTS/FPS… no one gives a hoot about a 5v5 PvP conquest where the viewers have no earthly clue about whats actually going on in the fight (even if you have shoutcasters) because its just a spam of flashy skill and no viewers want to learn all these different animations… Majority of the ppl are just gonna say “who well, he just went down than got rezzed, that was cool I guess?”

Anet seriously wasting resources and effort with this whole e-sports debacle, its a complete waste of time, and its been proven to be the past 2 years… ToL will barely hit 5k viewers.
