how do i record video?
If you use an nvidia card, MSi Afterburner is a good free tool for recording in-game footage. There’s also Fraps and bandcam which aren’t free.

If you want to make a decent recording, I’m afraid you’d have to pay for good recording software. There are plenty of free recording software around, but you’ll be disappointed if you try to record gw2 matches with them.

OBS streams, but also records good footage. it’s what I’ve use to record in the past.

I have a fondness for Bandicam actually, has a couple of presets already in the software allowing you to record on different settings depending on whether you want to directly upload to youtube or edit the video on the maximum quality
If you have an NVIDIA card, you can get shadow play for free through NVIDIA GeForce experience. There’s a setting where it’s always recording and you can hit alt+f10 to save the last (x) minutes of gameplay. You can change the length and quality of the saved video.

I’ve been thinking about checking that out. any idea if the quality is on par with fraps recording full sized?

Well, you can record up to 20 min at 1080 60 fps, but that is like a 6 gig video in their recording format. Quality has never been an issue for me. Hard disk space on the other hand. ….
Edit: Usually I record 20 min at 720 30 fps. I can upload a raw game later if you want to look at it for quality.

The best way of recording your footage depends (as Maugetarr already hinted) on your GPU. Simply put, there is quite a difference in performance when it comes to recording gameplay, because some tools are utlizing your GPU while others might use CPU power (like Fraps). In general, those recording with GPU are way faster, and software like Shadowplay (Nvidia) is highly recommended over Fraps these days. You will notice the difference, trust me.
That said; here are the best free options for AMD or Nvidia (imho):
Here’s 2014 benchmark comparing Fraps with “modern” capture tools like GVR and Shadowplay:
Comparison
That test is a bit old, but it gives you a good idea I guess. GVR performance was kinda bad back then (still a lot better than Fraps), that’s because it just got released when the test was done – it’s absolutely on par with ShadowPlay these days.. This link will also give you a rough idea about compression and data rate.
That said, you can of course use tools like Fraps (39$), bandicam (39$)or streaming tools like OBS (free) and Xsplit (subscribtion based) – but for pure recording, I highly recommend the ones mentioned above. They’re free, fast, and supported/developed by your GPU manufacturer. Fraps is a relict from the past, the development slowed down/stopped quite a while ago. Same for Bandicam.

GOOGLE: fraps
Great program, never had any problems with it whatsoever.
Ok. Here’s a raw video of gameplay tonight for a reference if the quality is good enough for you. I didn’t edit it at all; the video appears to skip around at the beginning because it pauses the recording while alt-tabbed and during load screens. You can set the mic to just in game if you want. I have mine open (so you can hear my annoying sighs -.-‘). There’s sort of a quick options menu, then one with more options like the temp file and the save location. You can see my settings in the screenshot. This video was 3.57 GB for reference.
If you upgraded to Windows 10 you can use its game recording feature:
Windows Key + G while playing a game
It has just basic functionality but it is not completely useless.
