I dont get why playing conservatively is some sort of godsend. You’re just lowering the skill cieling.
Playing conservatively is an indication that your toon is somewhat delicate. You need to consider positioning and a line of escape.
That actually raises the “skill ceiling.”
better than the current:
Step 1: Pick Target
Step 2: Spam everything at them as fast as you can
Step 3: Hope your team does the same
Step 4: Start a snowball that changes the games tempo from 0-100
The pace needs to slow down tenfold in order to start being competitive again, the spam needs to be more punishing, rather than forgiving like it currently is. Setting up several skills and positioning to combo damage back at launch is the equivalent to a single skill with a bunch of passive trait procs now.
GW1 was all about restraint, if you rushed in, you would most likely get rekt (most competitive games play this way, fighting games, mobas, hell even CS:GO)
GW2 is the complete opposite though, you wanna full rush and get someone down as fast as possible to start a snowball. It is less about player skill, and more about gaining a power advantage through sheer numbers and aggression by dogpiling the most vulnerable target (I guess that is a “tactic” in it’s own right, but boring, and uninteresting)
I think alot of it comes down to the game type. Conquest does not reward a team’s tactical play, but more an individual’s positioning and mobility, over everything else, so giving your team a numbers advantage means you can cover mistakes your team makes easier.
And even with the snowballing, there is less consequence for dying in this game than other competitive games due to the fact that the shiny circles are the objectives, not winning a teamfight (that just helps a bit) just because there are 3 permanently active objectives to go for, so if the enemy team gets that early advantage but kitten s on defending said shiny circles, the game swings back like it has schizophrenia.
The game needs some modes that do not rely on a completely variable progression bar (0-500, variable based on amount of circles held) such as:
- Annihilation: 0 respawn Team DeathMatch (like most GW1 PvP modes, random arena, team arena, HoH, GvG)
- Keep/Nexus Assault: GW1 GvG/Moba/Fort Aspenwood objective-style “kill lord/destroy nexus” to win. (https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_versus_Guild)
- Capture the Flag
- Lattice-style Tug-of-War TDM (respawns enabled, requires capturing points in linear sequence to win, push/pull)

i don’t think it was that bad on engi post IP nerf. big issue on ele sure, but nothing like we have today. like, compare scrapper to cele engi its so much better & easier.
4/0/6/4/0 with bombs was so much fun

wonder if anet has any opinions on this? do they think the pace of pvp is better or worse now?
Wow I haven’t watched any old footage like this, but I do miss this version and many near it of pvp. The trait update along with HoT really damaged the pvp in this game. (in my opinion) I’ve already let decay drop me from plat to bronze. I just can’t seem to get too excited for the matches. So much spamming. (especially thief nowadays) I really hope they continue to work on it and try and return the game to a time where it felt a bit more calculated and trade-offs were more prevalent.
God I miss my cele engi. It helped me to fall in love with the class (Well that and static discharge because who couldn’t love that?)
Choo, I thought the same thing. I remember when like 4k and 5k crits were what the really big burst skills hit and everything else was lower. Now it’s everybody has 4k autos and 10k bursts. Just insane to look at the difference. Plus, heal bombs settler engi was so troll and entertaining. Hold 3 people on a point and deal a bit of damage from condi… I miss the days when engi was fun

this game now… it’s just borked
i can hop on warrior & just blast off a 7k then two 6k hits in under 5 seconds. thats 19k damage not counting autos & headbutt. absolutely ridiculous. should also mention the whole 19k is AOE & includes AOE daze too. disgusting.
i was watching the stream, & my goodness- people are able to chill at 6k hp in a mid fight & actually survive through good play. now you would just get exploded with a DH trap, some random thunderclap, arc divider, just any random aoe.
it’s no way near as good as it was.
i miss cele engi, rocking bombs (healing w cele ofc), egun & mines. the ping pong was absolutely next level, & it had AOE boonrip so i could always decap. man, i miss that so much.
oh, & hammer sw/sh shout warrior with the old valk amulet, that was golden. a super tough cc support build, with a ton of toughness. back when toughness actually made you tanky.
got fond memories of static discharge too. used to play that in wvw too. good times. those were good times.
i just miss those old times. much more build variety, much more tactical fights. not this broken spamfest we have now. what a mess you’ve made of this game anet, what a revolting mess.
