Field of View.
Haha, yes. The FOV seems low and I was noticing how claustrophobic I was feeling playing today.
Agreed. This would be very nice to have.
That immersion!

Even though you wouldn’t achieve the large FoV as a triple monitor, a bigger FoV on a single monitor would definitely give the world more depth.
I believe the current FoV is around 60. If we could achieve atleast 85+, would be amazing.
I wanna know why Anet hasn’t implemented a slider yet. I’ve heard people saying it would give advantage to people in PVP, which i find odd when people with triple monitors already can achieve a higher FoV.
Agreed. 60 FOV belongs to consoles, not PCs. 90 FOV is standard and I expect it. Another basic of game design.
I want the FoV changed also because half my time is spent spinning the camera… They could have easily changed it by now i’m guessing they haven’t because of pvp;/
this isn’t meant to be a QQ thread but i see a lot of post about ppl getting really sick from playing gw2 because the fov is way to close. i have 2 friends that get sick and have to quit playing gw2 with in 10-20mins i too feel sick after playing gw2 after a few hours.
this seems selfish to ask but really think we need to have an up date to let the player adjust the fov other then that great game hope to sink many more hours in to it
This makes no sense. How can you get sick based on the FOV?

Try cupping your hands next to your eyes (like a horse gets these eye-flaps, to keep it focused on the things in front of it when its on the road with a carriage) and try walking around a bit. You have to turn your head constantly instead of moving your eyes. Basically, a narrower FOV makes you move your head (ingame camera) more, potentially causing nausea.
I found this out by Googling for 3 minutes btw.
I have no problem with the current FOV but more options to customize the experience is always cool.
If you have a widescreen monitor at a desk, but an FoV of around 60 there is a massive discrepancy between your true FoV and the game FoV which leads to motion sickness in susceptible people and eye strain in others.

Google the words FOV and motion sickness. There has been research on this.

Here is a good explanation from a conceptual artist with more than a little under his belt, Feng Zhu.

Yes, field of view can make a person feel motion sickness. Which is why every game should have this option. I have no problems with GW2 though since it isn’t as worse as other games. Borderlands for example, I couldn’t stand playing it for long. It was like I had a cardboard box on my head…
But I would love to see the option added.
This makes no sense. How can you get sick based on the FOV?
Motion sickness happens because your eyes are seeing something different than your brain expects to see. It’s quite common.
I don’t know if I’m talking about the same thing here but many ppl have mentioned the issue with the view rapidly zooming in and out when your character is close to a wall and you move the camera around trying to see better.

This is not the same issue, I doubt that he and his friends spends 10-20min close to a wall or hours :P

Stop defending the creepy brand-loyal apologists who will send you death threats for criticising GW2. The camera sucks, as many people have commented on it. The point is valid, you don’t have to be so light-footed about giving the criticism. If people don’t like it, too bad, they will get over it eventually.

+1
A bit off topic, but I never understood those creepy brand loyalists either. They remind me of those Apple brand fanboys.
I love this game, this game is amazing – but, yes, the FoV just makes me feel really cramped and kind of antsy especially after a bit of play.
I don’t want any advantage, I just don’t want my poor Asura to have glaucoma. :P
They could have easily changed it by now i’m guessing they haven’t because of pvp;/
That can’t be the reason, since triple monitor setups already have higher FoV.
FoV only applies to FPS games , in Guild Wars 2 the camera is way too close and you need to be apply to zoom out more.
I agree, this is a feature that’s becoming more common in PC games, and should become standard in my opinion.
If preventing lag is the reason behind not adding it, have a slider and people can adjust their performance just like with any of the other settings.
Not that I have any right to any information, but this is the first time I’ve seen it talked about so much in a game (at least, the kind of games I like to play, which are mostly MMOs these days), and I was curious as to whether this is about something that is drastically different compared to other games in the same genre, or is this more of a thing like ‘physics’, where you were exposed to it somewhere else, perhaps outside the genre, and are hoping it’s included here?
I like to play rather close to my character. Usually where they like to put the camera behind you is pretty much where I like it. Some games I move it in a bit more. Rarely do I move it out. I like it when my character is mostly there in the screen, I don’t particularly like to play like I’m moving one piece around in an RTS.
I’ve never gotten sick, playing that close, but I suppose some people might.
So that I’m on the same page as everyone talking about this (in many threads and sites), is this something that has ‘always’ been a problem in MMOs and people are being more vocal about it now? Is it a new gaming feature people want included? Is it a situation where they implemented FoV drastically different than other games in the same genre? If so, which other games in the genre seem to have it right (I still have some active subs and lifetimes, I can go look at those for comparison)?
I’m just curious, thanks.

No it doesn’t, it might be a little more noticeable in a FPS game but that’s all, zoom and FOV are NOT the same thing, watch the videos I linked above!
I’m just curious, thanks.

Field of view has nothing to do with distance of the camera. Basicly it is the strength of perspective.
You know , my only complaint with this game has been field of view. I love everything about this game but have been baffled as to why you choose to go with this horrible camera angle.
You created this amazing game world full of detail everywhere and the camera seems to point directly to the ground ???? It just feels very uncomfortable when playing and really doesn’t take advantage showing off the beautiful world as you play.
FoV only applies to FPS games , in Guild Wars 2 the camera is way too close and you need to be apply to zoom out more.
No, FOV is strength of perspective distortion and applies to every 3d software including games. Standard for pc is 90, not 60.

Ok, and I thank the other poster too, all great definitions.
What I’m trying to wrap my head around is why is this a new topic? Either GW2 did something drastically different from it’s predecessors in the genre, or this is a new feature that is starting to show up in games and ya’ll are asking for it here? Is that right?
I’m trying to understand where it’s coming from. In the past 2 years, I’ve tried out Rift, SWTOR, TERA, TSW and now GW2. I’ve played many before that as well, in the genre, and this is the first time I’ve seen it talked about so specifically and with such conviction that it makes me think they either did something really different (which I don’t see, and I’d love to see it, maybe juxtaposed screenshots with some arrows or ‘something’ that is pointing out what is different), or I’m wondering if this is a ‘new’ feature that is of hot topic in gaming across all genres, and I’m just now seeing it show up as a point of ‘please add this’?
If it’s a “this is the next new thing, please add it”, then I’ll understand where everyone is coming from when I read these, it gives me some perspective.
If it’s something that they did totally different and it’s causing people to be sick, compared to Rift or any of the other games in the last 2 years, or the 12 years before in this genre, then I’m ‘really’ perplexed because I’m not seeing it.

This isn’t something unique to GW2 no, this problem plagues many games sadly but not everyone is affected, it’s like motion sickness, some get it, some don’t.
I myself don’t suffer from it, specially not since I’m an Eyefinity gamer (I get a higher FOV in GW2) but fov matters anyway, if you watch the youtube videos above you get a good explanation but basically it comes down to the ratio between how big your screen is, how far from the screen you are, the aspect of your screen, the fov in the game and how sensitive you are to it.
@Patches: Ok, that makes sense. I’ve never had a problem with it before. Though I went from a 20" or smaller desktop monitor 3-4 years back to varying between playing my PC games on a 46"-52" TV. So maybe I ‘missed’ the problem where the monitors got bigger, but we’re still sitting at your desk too close to them.
I might argue that this is an environment problem that should be solved by the user, no?
I watched those two videos, and they are really interesting, but what I don’t see is how you would solve the problem for one set of people without taking away something from another set of people? I’m currently on my 46" TV. I’m maybe 5-6 ft away? If they were to change the game as those videos demonstrate, with ‘fake’ fuzzy peripherals on the screen so that person sitting 2’ from their 30" screen will feel better, won’t my game now look weird to me, as those fake fuzzy peripherals are now in ‘my’ field of view?
But at least I’m getting a better understanding of what the problem is. And it makes sense that this is becoming more and more of an issue as people are getting bigger and bigger monitors and putting them on their desks, but not adjusting how close they are sitting to these monitors.
Ok, all caught up, thanks everyone, carry on. I got me my edumucashun!
notebene; The idea isn’t to change the FOV to another set specific but to give those users that want it a fov slider that can set the fov to what fits them best
Also higher FOV means more to render and that can result in lower FPS, some gamers wont care to change it, some might not need to but like it better with higher and for those that suffer from nausea the can make it so the don’t get it or at least minimize it

Well that sounds reasonable. Just like sound or gamma or anything else. Ok now I’m really caught up. Seems like a good and reasonable idea.

FoV is as old as 3d graphics. It has nothing to do with genre. It is set up for any 3d game. Often hardcoded to certain value but good engines alow for on the fly change. Tweakable FoV is nothing new in games, there are titles that are 10+ year old that have it. Don’t know much about old mmos to be honest.
60 is standard for consoles, 90 for pc becaues monitor is closer hence takes more of your peripheral vission and needs more perspective effect. Watch the links someone attached here before for precise explanation.
Now if you ask me why FoV is not tweakable when it was 15 years ago? Well the very same reason why you have delay on input when moving in gw2 or why there is no trade button. You will find out answer to that you will also understand why each new game removes more and more graphic settings, why all new games allow you to beat them just because you installed them or why refresh settings for my monitor is considered “advanced” option in my system and is hidden from my eyes. I unfortunatelly cannot understand decisions behind modern software design so I can’t answer that.
I remember somewhere in the beta that they were working on a FOV slider. I am curious the did increase zoom from BWE2 to BWE3. For those that played in the two betas and had a FOV issue did that resolve part of the problem for you? What about when they fixed the camera for the downed state?
Want higher FoV, please I want higher, must reduce nausea of lower FoV.
This makes no sense. How can you get sick based on the FOV?
It is a very real issue. While I have zero problems with Guild Wars 2, there are quite a few games (particularly FPS games) on the market that almost make me vomit while playing them. RAGE and Skyrim were two recent releases that were sickening with their default FOV settings.
I can live with the current FOV – what I want to stop happening is if the camera is anywhere near ground level all of the sudden everything looks like I’m looking up through the bottom of the world, but overlaid on top of what is ‘above’ ground. With all the hills, especially for Norn, this is a major PITA…
I want the FoV changed also because half my time is spent spinning the camera… They could have easily changed it by now i’m guessing they haven’t because of pvp;/
some players use this as a reason to not unlock FoV customization, that it will somehow create an unfair situation in PvP. this is an idiotic argument, since players can already go into windowed mode and reduce their screen vertically immediately gaining a completely exaggerated FoV of greater than 180 degrees already.
quite simply, those who can’t understand the benefit of having a wider, natural FoV are console players who have little to no experience with PC gaming.
…players can already go into windowed mode and reduce their screen vertically immediately gaining a completely exaggerated FoV of greater than 180 degrees already.
Lol, thanks for tip.
It drives me nuts when navigating a small tunnel and I cant see anything because the camera is constantly bouncing.
Camera also always bounces in and out in many areas especially jumping puzzles when trying to get the best view.
A first person view would be nice.
Signed, we need a FoV slider with a good min and max range. The FoV right now is definitely too low on most 16:9 monitors. It makes a huge difference in being able to see the horizon line when you’re playing/not have your character taking up too much room and generally makes the entire experience better.

Preferably a FoV slider for both Horizontal and vertical and a custom aspect creator, IMO most games on PC should have this as gamers more and more use a great variety of screens and resolutions etc.
We need to be able to zoom out a bit further too. It is hard as hell to use some seige weapons in some angles even at full zoomout. I dont need to see the whole flippnzone just at least a couple notches further away.
I’m definitely for better view.
+ Zoom Out (The current max view makes me feel like I’m in a room where the ceiling is too low)
+ Zoom In (I’d love to be able to zoom in on my character’s face without having to force the camera by pressing it up against a building)
+ First Person (Yeah, you know how your camera goes haywire during certain jumping puzzles, right? Letting us zoom all the way to first person would go a long way. Nothings says rrrrraaaage like falling off a cliff because your cameraman is a troll)
I won’t even pretend to have any idea how the game is programmed, but by experience from other games, most camera options are usually just a number easily changed either in the directory or by a quick console command in-game. Don’t need a fancy slider right away, just let us stand upright. My neck is hurting.
not the question. Imagine learning throughout your life at the rate of an infant."
All and all it seems lots of people would like more camera control fov, distance, aspect etc and for some it’s not just cosmetics, they actually need it to be able to enjoy the game without getting nausea.
Hope someone at Anet pass this along, should be a fairly simple thing to do without causing to much trouble
/signed
FoV is absolutely mandatory.
What is this, I don’t even …
You can zoom right out with the mouse wheel, and you can look at the sky.
The camera bounces a bit in a few cramped areas, that’s about the worst you can say about it.
What are people talking about here, it sounds like there are several topics being mixed up.
