Suggestions to make one-time events better:

1. Create a large window (a few days) for completion, but flag those that have completed it. They can be in the event multiple times, but only get reward once.
a. If there is new content after the event that alters the world then allow them the option to move on and not be allowed to do the event again during event window. This would be irrevocable.

2. Allow guilds to reserve time blocks and then assign them to a specific shard. Backfill the rest of the instance with random players until whatever max population is reached.

3. Flag player with the instance they were in that expires in 15-30 minutes. If they DC it holds their spot for that long so they can rejoin the same instance. If they DC and rewards have been handed out then either give them the rewards if its within that 15-30 minute timeout range or allow them to join another instance that is nearing completion.

4. If there are any cutscenes that go with the event allow them to be viewed any time you want. DC’s happen and people miss things.

5. Innovative idea for the day… Allow people to buy rez orbs in your store and not be account bound so they can be sold for gold also on Trader. Also allow people to be able to ask in Map/Guild/Party for a rez. Right clicking their name gives you the option to ‘Apply Rez Orb’. This is good for people that fall down to the bottom of a pit and just are out of the way a little and

6. Identify leechers and zap the hell out of them or something. I saw people that would follow the entire time and stay on the fringes. They didnt fight or help at all. If they havent used any skills at all and are just hanging around for a free ride then do not give them any rewards. Not sure if this can be done but I noticed a few folks that would stay in range of the event but out of aggro. Annoying.

Anyone else have ideas? Or just think mine are crap and want to tear them apart? Provide feedback.

Was thinking of creating a new thread, but since there is already one, maybe I should simply write my ideas here.

Problems with current one-time event:
(1) If you have RL business that takes precedence over the event, you can’t participate.

(2) Hard for players with different time zones

(3) Hard to join your friends since everyone on full overflows

Maybe more.

Since one-time events usually are meant to change something forever (that’s why they are one-time), thus make it hard to be carried out multiple times, my suggestion is to make them happen once in each server but providing multiple chances for players to participlate at different times. Here is the solution:

(1) The event would begin as scheduled on all “currently persistent” servers, including overflow servers, thus changing their worlds.

(2) When you login after the event has started or ended, you can talk to an NPC in LA or somewhere releated to the event to join a queue.

(3) After 30 minutes, or if enough players are in the queue, a New Overflow server will be generated in the state of before the event happens. Everyone in the current queue will be prompted to join/stay in queue/leave the queue. If you join, you will be moved to the newly generated overflow server which has the event started in a very short time, say 5 minutes.

(4) This will last either 18 or 24 hours. If there is some one-time reward, you will only receive one even though you may participate the event on newly generated overflow servers multiple times, in order to have fun with your friends or take the chance to enjoy it multiple times if it is really fun.

This idea does not require any major change to the current server infra-structure and I think it can be implemented with only a small tweak. And it should benefit a lot of players who have problem participating the one-time event.

Something I have seen elsewhere is the implementation of “memory” type events, where after speaking to a story-telling npc, you enter an instance to complete a past world event. You would still get to play through the event as it originally occurred as if you had been there, and you could replay whenever you wish. Rewards could be removed or limited to one per account or character. Difficulty would need to be scaled in some way, as over time fewer people would be interested in running it, but it’s a good way of retaining all the great work that was put into designing these events and letting newer players experience it.
