I made this thread in General discussion, but a moderator closed it without clicking through the links and understanding my point, instead assuming that it was a simple spam thread when it actually had a valid criticism of the game.

When is a backpack not a backpack?
When it’s a backpack!

This is to highlight that there are (at least) 3 different backpack concepts in the game, when there should really be one consolidated one.

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

ArenaNet should really look at consolidating all of these design concepts.

It would be good if ANet used different terms for the backpack that comes with engineering kits and the one that is worn as a trinket, but it doesn’t get in the way of helping people understand the game. (I don’t see any issue with “starter backpack” vs “back item” — the first is a subset of the second, the back item obtained during character creation.)

However, I would be happy if ANet tackled the following inconsistencies:

  • Back items are the only trinket that can break; the only other items that break are armor.
  • They are the only trinket that can be displayed, but not even this is consistent (since many back items cannot be displayed).
  • They are the only trinket/armor item that cannot be crafted and the only that does not come in common or fine rarity.
  • Some backpacks (notably Mad Memories) cannot be upgraded, yet the repair costs are consistent with L80 items.

Why would we consolidate them? They serve different purposes. They all have back in their name, but that’s it. It makes no sense to consolidate them. How would you mix storage bags and weapon kits together in any way? It makes no sense.
