I started my roaming as a meditation guardian. (Like 2 years ago) and I IMO I did fine. I had good mobility via 2 teleports and a leap and I felt like I can fight almost anyone on equal grounds.

Then I made my thief for roaming purposes too and I really sucked with it : D I kept losing and losing and losing. I only won fights where I surprised my opponent… After a lot of practice I was able to become “average” thief and win maybe 50% of my fights… With medi guardian I had more success even though I was a total noob to wvw.

Even though I agree with you that thief is probably the overall best I must say that its not easy to be good on a thief and even though I consider myself still a noob I beat most thieves on my vanilla medi guard

IMO, you are missing Chrono from the list from a mobility ranking and should be higher on viability standpoint. Overall they put Thief and Ranger in their place (obviously harder to “learn” in the sense of positioning as it is so critical for them). Nerfed Moa is still an I-get-to-kill-you button because of the Mesmer burst factor but there are so few roaming good ones out there (and those that are, you tend to stealth/run right by).

My opinion is Warrior is ranked way too high on your list as well. If you learn to look for and dodge the Headbutt opener (or react immediately with stun break/evade distance), Warriors are seriously in trouble even with their immunity cooldowns. They are near broken against bad players/bad builds though since it compounds very quickly with reaction timing.

Revenant is also way too high…lol. With the exception of Glint heal (seriously nerfed), the Reve defensive options are basically delays in their own death and have virtually no value in helping regain momentum/position. The cooldowns on top of resource use means they can either go all offense and have low defense or vice versa. For a rev to win, they must predict basically how the other class is going to play because they lack reactionary (legend swap and use ability is too slow) unlike Thief which is solid just by autoattack/opening stealth attacks and use instant utilities and near instant init abilities to survive). That being said, Revs are awesome from a zerg/tagging standpoint (gotta love the hammer/Glint and/or Jalis and double-stack Stab on dodge).

Missing from a “roaming” list is:
Even when solo roaming is that it really isn’t “solo” roaming all that much. I frequently run into many small allied groups (T1) and/or meet up with the map zerg so going in and out of pirate/ktrain is what actually made me move away from Thief; not that Thief is in a bad spot but their true iwin escape option (virtually on demand stealth) but it is just less effective the more enemies are around because of cleave/tracking projectiles/condition spam/hard CC.

EDIT: So my list from your criteria is (1) Chrono, (2) Druid and Daredevil, (3) Scrapper/DD Ele, (4) Warrior/Berserker, (5) everything else. When you add an in/out of zerg factor, the only choice is Chrono and Druid IMO (or a quick swap/change build/change weapon sets to Auramancer if you play Ele) – Warrior/Berserker and Scrapper are OK. Thief seems to fall way down the list then unless you like playing Mercy/rez bot for fun.

I roam just fine on a p/p engi. Just need to have map and situational awareness.

Simple, two 1200 range (with evade) abilities on 3 of Greatsword and 3 of Staff (both are fairly quick from a casttime/aftercast too). 20% reduction traits make the already low cooldowns, even less for Druid (I use just the Staff trait since it aligns the GS with the Staff cooldown at 12s and use back-to-back). The Staff 4/GS 5 and the pet (Smokescale) both can be used as CC while you maneuver which the Thief doesn’t have an option of. Thief has more “burst” mobility (requiring initiative) but does not keep pace with Druid after a couple of 12s rotations if the Thief doesn’t have high terrain variations (teleport SB/Shadowstep utility is good so there are areas where Thief wins). However, Thief also does have more on demand stealth so escaping/resetting fights is easier for Thief (it’s actually pretty lame how stupid easy it is).

True story, I had a Warrior and Thief chase me around EB last night from the Dredge all around the red keep until I decided to port back to my keep after Pangloss Yak…I could of stood my ground with the Thief but I was killing Yaks and the Thief had to wait for Init to regen to engage me from Stealth so he stood back/SS to engage but the Yaks were already dead by then so I kept disengaging (Basilisk Venom opener). The Warrior was lost somewhere around Mendons after I killed that Yak with his Sword/Warhorn/GS build but showed up again (guessing he ported to red keep and Thief friend kept him updated on my position or he was following the orange dot across the map) and I then ported back to Green keep as I was headed to Ogre (never saw them again after that for the rest of the night :P ).

Maybe it’s just me but I see plenty of PO’d comments from my side about how stupid mobile Druids are (reminds me of the old Nike Warrior build I ran back in the day).

The difference between the good roaming Druids and the not-so-good is the use of the pet/weapons to CC. But caught in the wrong circumstances, everyone dies.

Keep at it. Nothing wrong with condi engi but the deck is a bit stacked against you; no where near some of the other classes though as it’s a good alternative at the Scrapper rank (usually you are pulling many of the same traits/utilities even).

To me, PP Engin just feels a lot like Berserker/Warrior where you do your condi burst rotation/reapply as you can and hope they don’t have counters or they just leave/reset altogether.

I like Engin for zerg battles (right behind the front melee train for “clean up duty”) a lot more.

He/she(Meridia) left the server too. I heard they had to cut the body guard wages . QQ kept running them over so many times. Funny how QQ can even make people QQ on forums lol. Did we win or nah?

Revs are good for squads and zergs, but not in groups of <= 3.

Lol we had a thief main on condi engi which he never played before, and we played a warrior before buffs. We didn’t even want to do it that day since we didn’t have our best line up online. If you want a reference to what it would be like vs QQ in serious 5 v 5, look no further!

I understand my opinion may be biased here because i am in QQ too, but we really didn’t want to GvG that night just for the fact we didnt have the right people online. We only did it cause we don’t pus out of a fight. Win or lose we going give you our best, believe that. But i mean if they wanna keep talking like Trex is the best for small group GvG’s we can go anytime just let me know.

I agree completely Roamzero. Tier 1 WvW is definitely a zerg fest. I can’t even count how many times I’ve been run over by a zerg or chased from 1 end of the map (north camp to spawn at south) by a 30-50man zerg, cause they are just so relentless. So proud to kill a member of QQ like it’s a trophy win.

Rev isn’t good solo because its boons are wasted and it needs support.

Agree on Druid, really only useful as a support in a party.

Mmm, I must admit I lost interest in roaming/spvp during launch of HoT (things felt too spammy for me: evades,blocks,condis,boons,etc). Plus I felt roaming scene sort of devolved to more camping portals/spawn (whether they’re friendly or hostile). Probably more so the lack of “small guilds” claiming to be roaming; I think QQ is the only one left on current T1 match up.

Is there a best “solo roaming” class or is it assuming thief, because of “overall” status? Or is solo roaming utterly pointless due to w.e. reasons (lewt, fights, walking simulator)?

They don’t. Nothing catches a thief with a Shortbow, Shadow Step and Unhindered Combatant. Add on Signet of Agility as well as Steal and the thief is halfway across the map while other classes are just getting out of the blocks. Then there is faster movement in stealth on some builds in addition to no movement hindering conditions effecting a Dare Devil.

Even better all those skills are viable on a combat roaming build not just some skill added for some extra mobility. If we want to get crazy Shadow Trap and Acro make a thief stupid fast.

Depends on if wearing full ascended or not
I would put Warrior at the top of my list rn because:
full berserker ascended warrior has enough sustain to facetank, it can keep up with or outrun almost any other build, and it only needs to hit you a few times to deal 20k
Condi warrior is also really strong with fatal AoE and even more sustain in exchange for a little more time needed to kill an opponent.

Second place for me goes to thief, because thief is invaluable for taking out targets in small scale fights, and they can be a real pain in the right hands. However, bad thieves are much worse than bad warriors.

Skipping to the bottom, I am putting Reaper at dead last. It lacks the damage to handle the high sustain high damage builds, and it has lost a lot of what made it dangerous in WvW. A Reaper is literally a free bag in a skirmish if its team doesn’t carry it.

Necro. Real men/women use necro. We don’t need stability, stealth, escape, or boons.

We bring the fight. I once knew a man who played necro who could chop a redwood in half with his bare hands. I once met a girl who played necro who could do 100 push ups and 100 sit ups in 10 minutes.

It’s not impossible. It’s I’M POSSIBLE. Don’t believe these crutch users.

The burst mobility on a roaming Dare Devil is able to move nearly 10k on one full rotation with Speed up all the time. Nothing catches that in WvW.

Stealth, thief is best single target. Mesmer with PU is easily the second best. Engi is 3rd or 4th depending since the Gyro doesn’t fully stealth them.

Dare Devil with D/P and shortbow is probably the most prolific roaming builds in the game. While, Mesmers are one of the strongest roaming fighters in the game. Everything else is pretty much secondary to those classes roaming IMO.

Mobility
Thief and Ranger both have very high mobility with the proper weapon/utility choices. A Staff + GS Ranger can cover some massive ground but nothing compares to the near infinite mobility of a Thief. Warrior isn’t far behind if they choose to use Sword/Shield + GS and Elementalist is roughly the same with Fiery GS. Mesmer has poor landspeed but good mobility. With Blink, Portal and other skills like Illusionary Leap, they can be pretty slippery in a fight.

Viability
Viability means “capable of working successfully” by definition. All professions can be effective at roaming if the player is capable. That said, some are more ideal than others. Thief, Mesmer, Ele and Engi all take the top spots because they are equipped for dealing with being outnumbered as well as having moderate – high mobility. When roaming, mobility and the ability to deal with multiple targets are extremely important. Although Warrior is good in team fights and 1v1 for example, they aren’t very strong in 1vX due to their primary defenses being very easy to counter. I rank Revenant below Necromancer only because Necromancer deals with multiple targets better than Rev. They are both bottom of the barrel in terms of viability but again, that doesn’t mean it cannot be done, just that it takes a greater deal of skill.

Stealth
Thief and Mesmer are roughly the same here. They can come and go as they please which is what makes them the best for roaming. It’s not mobility nor is it dealing with multiple targets, but it is the ability to reset a fight just about any time they like. That’s something unique to these two professions and although a Ranger isn’t terribly far behind, their access to stealth comes at a much higher cost.

Burst
A full YOLO Mesmer can pretty much obliterate anything if the player knows how to do it right. S/P Thief is certainly a close second but but since it’s channelled, I would have to award highest burst to Mesmer which is nearly instant. Glassy Tempests can do some pretty mean bursts as well as Berserker’s with Gunflame.

Best
Thief is simply the best for roaming because it has it all. Mobility, the ability to deal with multiple targets and high access to stealth. Although Mesmer comes in a close second, they struggle to deal with multiple targets and if they’re forced to run, their only option is to use stealth to do so as they have very poor landspeed. Engineer’s can be quite effective with mobility and multiple targets as well but since their mobility often means having to sacrifice a utility, they’re not always the fastest on the field.

Of course this is just IMO, as was the OP, but in regards to Thief, I don’t think that’s something that needs to be argued. Thief is just the ideal profession to roam with despite not being the best at 1v1.

Cele Ele is over all winner for me. Thief is weak and really not very good anyway. I never run in to anything I can’t handle on my ele.

im searching for a class good for solo roaming and pug zergs. can you recommand any class? im between warrior engi thief or ranger. ofc with elite specs. how can you play druid in zerg?

Can roam and do midline, paticularily midline healing.

Tier 1 WvW roaming? Solo I guess your best bet is either a thief or one of the power shout druid builds. Things get dicey you can just peace out with shadowsteps (thief), or combine some knockback/leaps (druid).

Don’t get me wrong. Condi engi’s have become more bursty as of late. But I feel like that is, unfortunately, the best non frontline build for engi’s. It’s gotten worse with almost every class jumping more onto the Condi train and, well, doing it better. Once there’s a Condi nerf, people will complain about it for a while (engi’s especially), the non Condi players will be happy while writing it off and forget that Condi builds are still a thing. It’s happened before, it just makes engi’s that much more difficult to actually be good with.

As for p/p, that’s just personal preference. I find the shield skills way to clunky for my taste, and I can’t bring myself to give up blowtorch.

P/P isnt really personal preference though, its what make condi engie viable.

This pretty much sums up what we all think of qq.

I roamed on my Elementalist primarily when I was T1. Revenant is also a lot of fun to roam with.

We bring the fight. I once knew a man who played necro who could chop a redwood in half with his bare hands. I once met a girl who played necro who could do 100 push ups and 100 sit ups in 10 minutes.

I beat one of those QQ guys at a camp one cool nice evening. Then proceeded to get blasted with whispers that I needed to stop playing necro and wells are trash, staff was stupid, dagger immobilize shouldn’t be in the game, and war horn cripples are OP.
