We have all of these threads about how ranger is OP, and no counters. But the real question is…

Why do rangers never complain about rangers? =]

Ranger v Ranger is like those old west films where the 2 people walk 10 paces, turn and fire. Or the Ranger specs condi and completely obliterates the poor power Ranger.

Honestly, the only class that can really complain about Rangers is the Necro imo. Every other class has reflects, stealth, similar range, gap closers, invulns, etc.

Because, whether I’m running S/D+GS or S/D+S/A, melee ranger is extremely effective vs lb rangers

Rangers have been the red headed stepchildren since day one.

In the beginning the warriors and guardians complained because we hurt them too much…so we got nerfed bad.

Our pets totally suck in WvW

Now we get a little dev love and peeps complain because we are not easy bags anymore….and we can hurt peeps more effectively.

Tell you what….I’ll agree that rangers are over powered the day that I can attack 4 players on my own and either kill them or be able to run away and live (just like a thief)

I think a lot of people that are rangers don’t complain about rangers because they play other classes and know how to counter them on those classes. Its still shocking to find people who never play a class that they have problems countering to learn more on how to counter it. But each to their own. Good hunting!

when we go ZvZ I tell my group to target rangers first. Then enemy pug is usually about 40% rangers with half of them being uplvls. Its a clear and ez way to divide and conquer a blob.

Ranger dmg is out of proportion to their skill/survivability so remove that threat first.

I’m sure if we think about it we’ll realize most of the times a power ranger only killed us because:

• We’re not paying attention and get pew pewed from behind

• We engage them in open field without swapping in reflect utilities

• We’re already fighting someone else and get focused

• We play a necro and thus have a legitimate excuse

• We get outplayed but don’t want to admit it

Throw up a wall of reflect in a choke and watch as all the rangers kill themselves.

Rangers are usually free kills. Always aim them first and get chill on them. A good Condi ranger or evade ranger can be annoying, but usually manageable. I have fought maybe 2 rangers I cant kill. Never underestimate the use of chill against a ranger. When in doubt, chill them. They rely on being able to use their skills often. When they can they have just basic attack, so they are dead

As someone who played a Longbow Ranger in WvW before the changes and who had opponents specifically target me assuming I was the weakest link and easiest kill, I’m too busy enjoying being able to win to complain about anything.

As for me… It’s been beaten to death but my complaint about Rangers (my Ranger is in my current rotation, so this counts as a Ranger complaining about Rangers) isn’t so much about Rangers, but about professions who have access to knockbacks not being able to keep it in in their pants.

My complaint is usually because I play a melee class and a ranger can kill me before I can close the gap. Only exception is when I’m playing a medi-build guardian with projectile absorption on sword 3 skill, 3 second block on focus 5 and 2 targeted blinks and a leap. If I’m playing a d/d ele (which could be killed in 1 rotation from a LB ranger even before the patch) or warrior, there’s just no way I could close the gap and still have skills and hp left to fight. If the gap never existed (such as if they didn’t pay attention to me), then they’re still pretty easy kills

Condi melee Rangers are pretty fun to fight though. The evades are real

I recently started running a zealot 02066 full melee ranger. I can honestly say I have little to no fear of power rangers. Between the retal/reflect of axe 5 and the evasions built into the sword and greatsword dodging things like rapid fire becomes a cakewalk.

If they can put up a fight, kudos to them. If they actually require me to concentrate harder to beat them, then they are a good ranger. =]

not really, rangers have a lot of utility for avoiding damage and being in close combat.

Just because they have them, doesn’t mean they use them correctly.

And by concentrating, I mean not just falling over like a ragdoll like I’ve seen some do. By concentrating, I mean actually playing well. It’s hard to describe, but you can tell when you are fighting someone who is good with their class. =]

Then you extend your one hand and your finger hovers over a button. You then press that button and after a few seconds a bag of loot magically appears in font of you. Huh. Whadda’ya’know?

How I imagine most rangers think

To those complaining about approaching rangers with warrior. If you got issues approaching ranger with a warrior you, as a player, has legitimate issues in the skill deparment.
Sure it may not be the “mainstream” choice of weapons, but you can by just getting a shield offhand or mace mainhand and ONE TRAIT shut down every ranged class in the game short of mesmer (cuz mes GS isnt projectile).

Mace mainhand, sword offhand or shield offhand with missile deflection completely shuts down lich necros, bow rangers (both condi and power), rifle warriors, Pistol thiefs and rifle engies.

Ill present you with a build that just wrecks ranged campers, and it still does tremendous damage to nabs who had no clue how to fight you.

Rangers ARE NOT OP, however the LB2 skill itself is OP.

Hell I hate having Rangers in my party, in most games they bring VERY little contribution except the occasional instakill LB2.

EDIT : Since were talking WvW(my bad) then yeah they can be annoying as fuzz if they catch you with LB2 at massive range and you don’t have damage mitigation.

That’s true, but specifically building for a single build on a single class? Also, any ranger will see you raise your shield and back up with a PBS ready to aim at your face. It’s very difficult to close the gap on any half decent LB ranger, especially if they have a GS as their other weapon.

The reason people dont like rangers is because they can massively devastate a single target. When one is the target of said devastation they dont like it… but thats all rangers are really good at. Other classes get better aoe attacks, buffs, etc. Just keep in mind if you become the target you need to take active measures more so than against most classes, and then the ranger goes back to being a non-factor. LOS them works for every class, and my go-to solution.

you raise that shield, but when you trait for reflect then mace 2 block also acts as a MULTI SHOT ranged reflect (untraited it only blocks one ranged shot). you get 2x blocks, the mace one is not very well known to most rangers as it is less obvious.

The build i posted works pretty much against anything. It just excels against ranged foes.
A build that has heals, blocks and burst. AND condi cleanse to a reasonable degree. If that build doesnt work for you, then you gotta just suck it up and “struggle on” against rangers.

Also, as above poster pointed out, rangers are strong against single targets, even their melee options is devastating (try to facetank quickness + signet buffed zerk ranger with sword auto going…. 6-9k hp lost pr 1.5 sec is fun right?). If you are 1v1 against a ranger, odds are against you unless you BUILD to stop rangers. Just like rangers BUILD to stop everything else in one specific way or the other.
