Gear Grind coming to WvW?
If it is true that Ascended Gear can only be gained through pve, I will be very very disappointed. I’m a dedicated WvW player. I haven’t done any pve since I was around level 60. I have no desire to ever do pve again.
If the only way to gain the best gear for WvW is through pve, I will probably stop playing. And I would be so pissed at Anet for doing this, it would be a cold day in Hell before I’d ever buy another of their games.
Hopefully Ascendant gear will also be available through WvW play. I look forward to hearing more.
if Anet launch this without upgraded WvW gear i will uninstall the game.
They cannot leave WvW with worst gear than PvE, has no sense.
I think the blog post is just confusing and incomplete, it fails to explain the system because says nothing about WvW and sPvP.
sPvP could and probably will be completely untouched by this. The reason it affects WvW is because it shares the same gear pool. Currently you have to do some sort of PvE for your gear, but its a reasonable amount that can for the most part be replaced by crafting or the TP. If in the next patch the top stats on gear is only available via dungeons then they are forcing my guild out of the borderlands and into a dungeon we don’t necessarily want to be in.

If they put a gear grind in, that will be the last day I play the game. I don’t care about what everyone above says. I’m not reading it. This game was supposed to be different than the other game I shall not name. It is looking like the developers are just making another game like that. Don’t let us down ANet, and don’t listen to these PVE kittens from the other game. They can go back to grinding gear and reputation in the other game for all I care, but if you put in a gear grind that requires PVE, I will simply move on to something else.

Another dungeon misanthrope here. I would not be jumping up and down if I were forced into dungeons. I can do those in that other game and I’m not in that other game by choice. Let me make this completely clear – Dungeons are non-dynamic instance based content that is predictable. W3 is dynamic, ever changing group group strengths and weaknesses that are completely unpredictable (players). Players don’t play by scripts and never will, that’s the appeal, sometimes they spawn 2 adds, sometimes 25 adds. :P
The bigger question is why do we have to learn new information from every outlet except the main site. Can we get press releases before other companies can post information. I can’t watch the twitter, facebook, reddit, and every gaming site on the continent just to get information when I come to the official forum where it should be – first.
Dungeons aren’t scripted either. There are phases to fights. But you can’t predict who the boss is going to attack. I think GW2 has the best dungeons available in an MMO right now.
Not counting some of the terrible lower level ones.
And saying players are unpredictable… Come on. lol Dungeons can sometimes be predictable. Players are VERY predictable.
I agree with the fact that this armor should be available for BoH. But saying dungeons are faceroll scripted is pure ignorance.

You people are way to paranoid.
Do you even have the facts? And fyi, ANets philosophy is that gear can be obtained by various means. So even if you just WvW you still get karma, you get badges. What’s the deal?
a lot of people will be disappointed they are not it.
Kinda strange they mention new tier PvE set but no mention of new WvW tier set.
That alone makes me feel sick inside, i tought Anet made a pvp centric game with pve as aftertought.
I have no problems that pve players get a new tier set, but they cannot offer a new tier just by doing PvE.
WvW players needs to be on par with pve players, or this is just WoW 2.0 and many have no desire to play that game again, no matter what jacket you put it in.
We are not paranoid, but dont forget that many left WoW / Pve games to join GW2 for PvP only, WvW is for many endgame, and so it should reward the best gear for that part of the game.
Can a we have a response from Matt or any other Anet dev on this matter ?
Not overly worried about the announcement itself. I don’t think we have enough concrete info to say yay, nay or /ragequit.
I’ll wait and see.

Let’s speculate on what “offensive infusions” could possibly be.
I understand that “defensive infusions” are likely to subdue the effect of the new agony condition in dungeons, but do people really think “offensive infusions” are unlikely to be useful in other aspects of PvE, in which WvW is simply PvP with PvE rules?
If offensive infusions are useful outside of the new dungeon, then they will be useful and likely a game-changer in WvW.

No, we don’t have all the facts. What we do have is an official Anet blog post which says that our exotics will no longer be best in slot. And the blog only lists pve dungeons as the way to get the new items. If there are other means to get the new gear, they aren’t mentioned.
That may be poor communication on Anet’s part. It certainly isn’t paranoia on ours.

Basing on just one screen, the stat difference is 8% (not counting in MF difference). Stat difference between exotic and rare is 12%. So if you want to know what’s the difference just downgrade 2/3 of your gear (stats wise) to rares.
That being said, it’s all speculations for now as there’s no way to know what are the stats of the rest of the items. Let’s wait an see how it goes before we judge.
However as soon as I see best gear for pvp not being obtainable in pvp I’m out of this game.
I know this was already posted but…
Land of the Dead all over again, yay.
Make a badge/karma equivalent or you failed. Preferably karma, badges have a horrible drop rate. (and I just spent all of mine on the exotic chest, lol)
WvWers want nothing to do with your dungeons. Keep your PvE gear grind out of our sacred battlefield!

What makes you think the other stat options lik berserker won’t become available as ascended gear? That explorer ring was just an example.
It was just a joke…But I hope that it will be true )

This will most likely upset alot of players who choose not to run an instance till their eyes bleed lol. As for myself this will be cake walk because like others, I have no problem running an instance for hours on end to get the best available gear I can get. My last MMO it was not unheard of for 10 hour instance runs early in the game. Now that game is mostly burn mode but still about 3 hours give or take. This will be cake for me, but others will not like this at all.
Finally! Gear will finally carry my scrubby kitten to victory!
The negative feedback in this thread should be proof enough that we don’t have all the information. I can’t fathom a developer overlooking such a thing.
I’m still looking forward to the update, with no fear of what’s to come.

This thread is nothing compared with the 107 (and counting) page thread on the general forum. Much heat and very little light.
Outside bloggers and gaming sites are already starting to talk about how Anet has broken its word on its core design principle for this game.
I’ve been mmoing for over a decade and I can’t remember this many people getting this upset this quickly. Anet is really going to have a pr issue on their hands if they don’t respond quickly. The feeling of being the victim of a “bait and switch” has the potential to really sour people on the company for a long time to come.
I take part in quite a bit of WvW, and I hate the idea of having to continually work on upgrading my gear. What’s Arenanet going to do to keep balance between those players who grind dungeons (or pay cash for gems) and the rest of us?
Here’s my suggestions
- Don’t increase stats, just increase the “infusion” for the dungeon mechanic
- Drop (or increase) stats in WvW to balance everyone
- Switch WvW to the same system as PvP (where you can choose everything separate from PvE)
Very important question. If its usable in pvp then we have to PvE?
A set for karma would be a fine idea.
This is very important to me. Skill, not gear, should be the deciding factor in PvP. And it is pointless to gate content by gear because the diffence in winning or losing an encounter becomes the difference between gear levels, not skill, so even in PvE, skill, not gear, should be the deciding factor.
Either way, I left WoW because I refused to get on the raiding gear treadmill. This meant that my only other “endgame” option was to PvP. Yet, in PvP, I was facing people equipped in the best Tier x raiding gear, giving them an unfair advantage as far as I was concerned. If this game does not implement instance obtained gear in such a way that the added stats only apply in instances, and not PvP, I will likely not continue playing this game.
One of my primary deciding factors to play this game was that they did a lot to level the playing field in PvP. In WvW, you are auto leveled to 80. In sPvP, they take the additional step of normalizing all equipment and giving everyone all their Trait points, etc. That is an extraordinary step that weighed heavily on my decision to even try this game. If they take that away with stats you can only get in instances, forcing me to have to do instances to remain competitive and only adding to balance issues (even though I do instances as it is), that, too, would weigh heavily on my decision to continue playing. And to be honest, even with the current game issues, I have no plans to stop playing at the moment. Adding gear differences would likely change that.
Here’s a quote posted a few mins ago in the general GW2 discussion on ascended gear.
I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.
Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.
Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores.

So ascended and infusions will both be in WvW, all your exotic gear is now obsolete, have fun!

This appears to alleviate the issue of having to grind PvE for Ascended WvW gear. It suggests it will be available through WvW.
There is still the larger issue of a gear treadmill being introduced to GW2, but at least WvW will get its own treadmill.
“Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two.”
I don’t get this. What is this gap between exotic and legendary? They have the exact same stats. Everything is cosmetic! I thought that’s how this game was designed. Now they are (for some reason) adding higher stats? I just don’t get it. The cosmetic progression is what sets this game apart.
They could do all of this with no bump in stats, add the new infusion slots, new skins that only protect you from PvE dungeon stuff and be fine. Why the bump in stats???

Hope it won’t be through badges where some classes have a massive advantage.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
I hope this gear only comes as “Explorer” and are custom made for crazed farmers. If these stats come as “Berserkers”, this is a huge impact in WvW, cus them % is not “just a few stat points”.
There’s always a gear grind. Any new 80 has to grind for exotics.
The trick for Anet is the keep the gap from growing acute. The games long term viability is not just keeping existing players but bringing in new. If it becomes obvious that only retirees have enough time to grind the hours necessary to bridge the gap- new players will go elsewhere rather than stick with Gw2… Planetside is on the horizon… I’m sure there are others.
Why would I want to spend 200 hours grinding badges to ‘catchup’ when I can spend 20 hours for a relatively brand new game? That’s the pinch point.
