Free & automatic upgrades of objectives will happen with HoT.

To provide balance…

I’d like to suggest that Free & automatic downgrades of objectives should be also be implemented at the same time. Also, have Enemy Yaks Deplete Supplies in an Objective.

Enemy Owned Camps will spawn Yaks that Down-Grade objectives.

As a solo camp capper…this would allow me to continue to play WvW with purpose.

Under the new HoT being planned with Free & Automatic Upgrades without the opposite mechanic that provides balance…my solo camp capping has little impact to WvW…once an Objective is Fully Upgraded.

ANet…please consider implementing HoT with this map mechanic:

1) Auto-Down-Grades of Objectives by Enemy Owned Camps & Yaks.

2) Have Enemy Yaks depleting Supplies in an Objective.

How should this work? Especially when you think about invulnerable dolys.

Doing something impactful on your own in a WvW-setting is and should be hard/impossible to do, rightfully so. I think/hope the new HoT-Maps favor smallscale, guild-based play, meaning lot’s of 5-10(or 20) player groups and not 1 big zerg and some random solo roamers.

The new map is just so big that one zerg alone can’t possible handle the whole map and solo players shouldn’t really be able to capture/upgrade stuff… therefore smaller groups.

If you solo cap a camp you deny supply to the enemy for making siege both in the camp and in the objectives it serves, grant it to your side, and you gain objective points for your side. How is that not providing impact? Is it less (because upgrades no longer require supply)? Yes.

I am interested in seeing how this all plays out, as they are essentially messing with the “economic system” of WvW by altering the value of its “currency” (supply). Much like real world economists and government officials I think they will find that just because they have their hands on the levers it does not mean they understand all of the consequences.

I say let it play out and see what happens before they start tweaking. It may be a disaster, but the larger the disaster the more likely they are to quickly fix it. (Notice the post-patch patches we have been having of late.)

Edit: by the way, although they have taken supply out of the equation for upgrades, they have not taken out the fact that dolyak arrivals reduce the time remaining to upgrade. So think of it as dolyaks carrying two currencies: upgrade supplies and siege building supplies.

What, you want the game to play itself?

@MinerBob.5312: Klepto yaks are known to exist. Hostile yaks try to break through keep doors every so often, presumably to grab some booty inside (why else would they be so intent on taking down the door if not promised booty?).

That is a good one!

No, actually I do not want the game to play itself, but the developer blog stated it clearly (IIRC) that they want objectives to count for more. They have also indicated that they want people to group up more. Making it harder to solo objectives will do that.

Personally, I think this will make the map slightly more static, depending upon your server’s non-prime activity. Whether this is good or not will probably depend upon your mode in WvW (i.e. blog, zerg, havoc, or solo).

I think the biggest issue is that the dev blog – if I understood it correctly – uses the wrong language. They say upgrades are “automatic”; what they mean is “requires no manual intervention by players” rather than “guaranteed”. They say “requires no supply”, but that implies the dolyaks have less of a role. I think if they had used better terms there would be less resistance to change or tweak.

I look forward to seeing how it all plays out, despite the fact that I am one of the players that ran around on off-hours upgrading objectives in an attempt to make it harder for solos and small groups to quickly flip the objectives. That automation is what I used to do (and sadly, spend coin on).

I love this idea but if downgrades are too much for some of you to bear how about enemy yaks steal supply and restart the timer on whatever upgrade is running.

This is the problem with the current camps imho. You SHOULD NOT be able to flip a fully upgraded camp that also has dredge, ogres or hyleks defending it like you can currently. It’s not even hard to do to be honest, and with supply being such an important resource in WvW that is just plain stupid.

Personally I’d upgrade the main camp guard to a Champion and increase the number of guards by five. Then it would at least take 3-5 people to clear it out within a reasonable amount of time.

Soloing maxed camps in under 2 minutes is silly

For balance…

For every action…there should be an equal opposite re-action.

I’d like to encourage this…balance.

Also, WvW gaming should allow all types of player…from single to very large groups to do something to change the tide of battle.

Based on my observation…there are times when the following happens pretty consistently on WvW servers with low population servers:

1) Players don’t choose to form a 3-5 player havoc group.
2) Players don’t choose to form a zerg to save a fully upgraded structure.
3) Players don’t choose to form a 3-5 player group to take down anything.
4) Players leave WvW if no ktrain is running.

A single player flipping camps is fine because everybody can do it…that’s the balance. Also, flipping camps creates opportunities to draw out players to fight outside towers and keeps…instead of turtling inside.

The topic here is balance…Free & Automatic Up-grades and Supplies Increase…one way up…but no equal opposite reaction going down. Free & Automatic Down-grade and Supplies Decrease…

Doing things that help your WvW Home World…and Doing it Solo…

I think we’re kindred WvW Solo spirits.

That is refreshing…

You’re a True WvW fan, but sadly…

Our Solo Roles will become meaningless, or impossible to do…if ANet decides that everything in WvW Requires 3 or more people to do anything.

We need to suck it up & group with 2 other players to do anything….or quit playing WvW.

p.s.
Yes…your upgrades often made it hard or made it impossible for me to do anything…

Balance…we’re old school balance…

If the dolyaks are being killed then the keep/tower isn’t replacing old stuff with new and camps aren’t getting the old stuff to repair/improve. So the camp it has to use whatever is around and would cause it to degrade.

Makes sense to me.
