Devon Carver on the Future of World vs. World

“Support play is vital to victory but unevenly rewarded in terms of World XP, XP, gold, karma, badges, and other tangibles. While those players rebuilding your walls may be performing a vital service, theirs is usually thankless work.”

“Scouts, siege masters, and defenders are only a sampling of the roles we intend to add to.”

-have there been any changes to scouting/defending rewards imbalances? Why is it currently more attractive in terms of rewards to only take structures?

“…it’s also good to have some variety in the servers that are matched up against one another so they all get a chance to test their mettle against multiple opponents.”

-Season 2 seems to go against this reason. I’ve spent the last ~2 months fighting the same servers.

“Our goal is to continue to encourage organized large groups while giving small, tactical groups the necessary tools to put a dent into larger mobs of less-skilled players. We think that it can be fun to run around in a zerg — but we also think that the game should be about tactical acumen and skill more than sheer numbers.”

-please direct your attention to the map blobs that characterize WvW

“…we will continue to make tweaks to the scoring system to properly reward smart play and to make it possible for a server to prevail over superior numbers with superior tactics.”

“Right now our game rewards you for holding an objective, not necessarily for taking it, and overwhelmingly favors the last server to log out for the day. -coverage is the only thing that determines score. where did that pipeline go?

“We have a lot of ideas (some crazy, some not) that we hope to release to make WvW an even more vibrant game; a game that will continue to grow and evolve for years to come.”

-this is the kicker for me; there has been so little in terms of WvW growth outside of account-bound WXP and the Obsidian Sanctum arena. Where are the ideas that Devon Carter was so excited to introduce? There has been serious burnout even among the most hardcore players who are sick of a gamemode that seems to ignore every ounce of player input. Where are the implementations of the numerous CDIs?

Around the time when Arena Net tried to monetize WvW by adding finishers which then failed so hard that they had to introduce a stomping mechanic into PvE is when I realized WvW will never see anything substantial.

Rewards for defending
Rewards for defending is troublesome. It’s hard to implement a system that could reward you for a bit more passive playstyle while not giving it to bots. Dolyak escorting used to give a reward, there were armies of bots escorting them.

Matchup variety
Season 1 or the current match up RNG, did you miss those? Variety is good, but lets be honest. The coverage of all the servers is so diverse that there is usually only 3 servers that can compete with each other and the rest is either getting steam rolled or being the steam roller. They tried more balanced match up system in S2 and imo it was better than s1, even if it gave pretty much the same match ups all the time.

Blobs
Sad fact that supply is the key to victory and the more players you have the more supply you can carry with you. They would need to change a lot with WvW to prevent this.

Just wanted to point out a bit of stuff. And yea, I assume threads like these are one of the reasons we don’t see that much communication between devs and community. People see something, they make assumptions and hold into that and paste maybe a sentence and hold into it that they can use to hammer the Devs for their “mistakes”.

I for one wouldn’t do much communication with a community like this. For realz.

It isn’t the players fault that they are frustrated with WvW being neglected, with communication lines non existent. It’s all ANet’s doing.

So you’d be just like ANet? You would neglect WvW then when called out on it just stay silent?

The community isnt the problem, what you see now is the result of the devs and mods ignoring the WvW community for 2 years.

What else would you expect? For us to remain nice and happy whilst seeing only PvE content being released every 2 weeks, whilst WvW gets scraps, if we’re lucky, once or twice a year?!

If this was a subscription mmo players would have left long long ago. The fact it’s still free to play gives this gave a second chance, but only if the devs put more work into WvW. PvE and sPvP are not the way forward. The community has known this since beta.

I’m not sayin ANet hasn’t done anything wrong. What I’m saying is that the community doesn’t give much room for the devs to come and talk in here. If they say “we look into it” there is a lot of people who will assume this means they are going to do something about it and will quote those few words everywhere.

It’s a toxic environment here in the forums. Sure, it’s probally ANets fault that it got into this by their decision to neglet WvW community for so long after the launch, but imo the community isn’t giving too much room or being very forgiving either.

And yea, maybe I came out a bit wrong. To be honest I wouldn’t ever be in any kind of position to communicate with any MMO community ever. It’s a hard job and you don’t really get much apprecition out of it. I wouldn’t even fit for the job, at least I don’t see myself for it. And one bad move will follow you till you just quit the job as the voice of devs.

TL;DR
Theres something wrong with both ends in this community. From whom it started doesn’t matter.

You can’t even give them credit for these two things.

Devon Carver was ENORMOUSLY opposed to account-bound WXP when WXP first appeared. And the funny thing is that at the same time, things in PvE were shifting from soulbound to accountbound (gold, karma, if I recall correctly). Look how long it took for them to admit they were wrong!

And the Obsidian Sanctum exists only because of that dev who griefed the GvG and cause a MASSIVE uproar within the WvW community. Anet almost had no choice but to do something. Had that dev not done what he did, you can be pretty sure we wouldn’t have the Obsidian Sanctum today.

Fair enough, having said that from what I gather most official forums are pretty toxic so any games developer should be aware of what they are getting themselves into.

The CDI’s were a great way to engage the community and get some sort of healthy dialogue from both sides and avoid silence on one end and “WAAAAA I’m not happy” on the other. But even they were left up in the air, it’ll be interesting what happens with the next one.

Most servers are going to play the same servers over and over and over again until the next season not seeing any “new” faces – ever.

Since we’re talking about ANet’s lack of progressing on improving WvW here, this actually seems like an appropriate time and place to pimp this suggestion thread: [Suggestion] Publishing WvW Player Hours

On the existing point of defense— It is completely a thankless job…except for the world score. The problem is that there’s a disconnect between you sitting in a tower for 4 hours managing upgrades and fending off the occasional havoc group looking for an easy vacant cap, and your world winning the weekly match because you alone helped tick higher for that entire 4 hour span.

If you think big picture like that, then it makes a lot of sense already to play this “thankless” defensive game (when you already have enough people on offense to keep the enemy zergs busy of course), but unfortunately it doesn’t cater to the, “I’m going to run with the zerg to maximize MY points/achievements/xp/loot,” mentality that seems to grip most people.

It’s the definition of selfishness vs selflessness.

They are rarely based on evidence
They are rarely polite, or useful to discussions

I like that the ideas were shared, whether or not they come to light.
I hope that there are lots of staff at Anet and Ncsoft all getting paid equally.
I hope they are preparing things that will convince me to part with my money.

Food and oil aren’t free, nor are they attainable with badges.

New gear for a new build isn’t free. And runes/sigils aren’t available with badges.

Siege is half free half not (donations, and infrequent drops), and basic blueprints can be bought with badges. But superiors cannot be bought with badges, and are REALLY TIME CONSUMING to slowly 1 by 1 forge.

Repair cost before it was removed.

Money is a highly necessary part of WvW for some annoying reason, you can’t entirely blame players for seeking it out.

ALL IS VAIN.

All patches since release have been PvE-based. Living story, reward changes, NOTHING else. I don’t believe we will ever see new content no matter what the community say. It’s a pity but we have to live with it.

Not true. Beta implies that somebody is paying attention and plans to make changes as may be appropriate. Peek behind the curtain at WvW headquarters and you’ll find an empty room.

Then again, I do think that an empty room is better for the game than back when Devon was in it.

Edge, account bound wxp was ready month ago befor they released, new masterys are ready since 4-5 months or more. They just delay everything as long as possible.

They delayed it for another bulletpoint on the Grand Feature Update is the kicker.

Yes this is an excellent point. Even building upgrades, however insignificant a cost they may be to some players, are a drain on your wallet but entirely necessary in order to play WvW “well”.

It is kind of funny to look back at how the game was at release and then compare it to what we have now.

I mean, professions are essentially the same as they were back then: no new utilities, no new elites, no new weapon skills, barely any new traits. WvW is largely unchanged… it’s no wonder that people are getting burnt out from the same-old-same-old.

But hey, at least we got to experience the glorious Game of Thrones-like saga that was Scarlet and Living Story Season 1, right?
