Q:
I heard a rumor that the Devs were working on fixing it so loot bags in WvW are auto looted into your character’s bags. Don’t know how many bags I have missed and left lying about due to inability to see or get back to them. Good PvPers are constantly moving and strafing as we all know so its hard to catch them all the time when they spawn.
Anyway I heard a fix was coming and then I haven’t heard anything else on it…since I finally got my forum access unbugged I figured I would ask about it.
Anyone??
Maybe even a Dev? ;-)
A:
A friend of mine missed out on a steel chest last night for this very reason. I’m not sure if it’s an intended mechanic to deny the losers of a battle the majority of their loot, but that’s the end result.
Everyone always disagrees with me on this but I’ve always felt that the loot in general is very hard to see unless you’re right on top of it. In GW1 you could see a drop from an impressive distance and of course there was the chat log to advise you. During the betas and first few weeks of play I missed tons of loot until I trained my brain to notice the comparatively faint sparkle effect.
I don’t really think that it is a FIX because it’s not broken. It would be really convenient tho. Hope they do this.
Hmm I think it is definitely a broken mechanic…
Who stands still in pvp?
Who wants to spam F during pvp?
Who wants to run around looking for hard to see bags after pvp?
I think it’s definitely broken, why not just auto loot the bags to your characters backpack or whatever?
Nothing worst than being downed in a major battle at the far end of the map, surrounded by loot bags. This has happened to me many, many times, every time you have to press [F] your not pressing [1,2,3, etc] using your fighting skills. So yes, auto-loot is needed in WvW!!!
These points make sense, and although i pick up 90% of my bags with the help of ‘Left Ctrl’ to see the bags names show up, i still think it’s work and holds up zergs causing people to be left behind sometimes.
One suggestion i can make for this issue is to make the Bags of Loot the same as regular material bags of loot you get from mobs, which will be automatically looted into your bag. This idea would also eliminate bag clutter as the bags would stack just like regular material loot bags, allowing you to open them whenever you wanted so you don’t waste time selling a bunch of blue/greens after every 2-3 fights. Finally if you have no room for anymore bags, then and only then would the bags of loot drop on the ground the same as they do now.
If that idea doesn’t work, then maybe it would be easier to reduce the amount of bags that drop by auto-looting Badges of Honor and not putting them inside bags, so that if a bag were to drop from a player with ‘only’ Badges of Honor, then no bag would actually drop and you’d just get the Badges sent to your bag. This would give people a way to choose not to loot junk but still get all the Badges of Honor they deserve.

I have died many times jumping back into a rushing zerg to pick up a couple of loot bags. My precursors were there, I tell you!
I think there is too many useless loot bags with barbs, spikes and stuff that we’d be left with our bags full of that to be honest we should be able to pick up what we want before it despawns, you get better chance of rares from the those WXP rank chests even.

I very much like this idea. Good one! I generally get my bags for the most part, but I hate having to spam F while moving and doing other things. It’s really distracting sometimes. And I have missed a couple of chests because they dropped after I was downed, those are frustrating.
this will just promote more zerging
this will just promote more zerging
This canned response to everything proposed as a change drives me freaking batty. How?! I mean really, how would having auto loot option promote more zerging?Seriously. I want to know.
I have had more loot bags drop in small scale fights that I never get to grab than running with a zerg. An auto loot function would only give me more reason to solo roam or small group party like I love to do. I have lost count the number of bags I’ve missed out on due to small scale fights where the balance tipped in the enemies favor slightly, that one extra guy of theirs rolling up at a bad time.
That missed loot bag taunts me, I know it was something shiny. It wasn’t a spike, nope, it was something better! Yet that thief came out of nowhere, they held the supply camp, got their guys up, and there’s no way to make it back in time before the bag despawns. Arrggggg!!!!
Moral of the story?
Auto loot. Do want.
Please?

I would like to know how guaranteed loot will not promote zerging.
I hate it too when I cant get that loot bag after a fight. but if you were winning the fight then this wont be a problem anyway. It makes sense that if you lose a battle you dont get a reward. either you have to ditch your team to get loot or continue fighting, would Id be cautious or go John Woo on this kittens! Is the loot more important than our objective? I’d rather have these choices than none at all.
If auto loot is enabled in WvW it just removes a small slice of depth to the game.
(edited by CKres.4589)
Just because something doesn’t demote zerging, it doesn’t automatically promote it. That logic is absolutely flawed. People won’t zerg more because they’re getting all loot bags, people are zerging because it’s fun, it’s action and it’s the most reliable way to tag enemies for loot. If anything, ANet has to fix that broken mechanic.
And god no, having to spam F has absolutely nothing to do with "depth". It’s just a major annoyance. And btw., they would already have implemented auto loot for WvW instead of loot dropping to your feet, they just had reservations for technical reasons. It’s about time they implement this.
(edited by Iruwen.3164)
LotRO has a really good “remote looting” feature now that works great. All loot is auto stuffed into your bags and then you also have a 50? slot overflow that holds extra loot for an hour to give you time to sell the extra junk. I would love to see this implemented.
Oh and if you can’t see the loot bags, just hold down ctrl as it highlights them and puts a tag over them.

To counter, the current system promotes zerging. You are more likely to get your scattered bags and not die trying to grab them the more people you have around you. On the otherhand if you are garaunteed to receive the loot you earned, you will likely take more risks without losing that precursor yet again.
Didn’t at some time loot bags “followed” you around for some time? Or it could have just been that someone tagged earlier finally got killed, but I think that’d be the best option — bags re-spawn at your location for some time until you pick them up. If you ignore them for prolonged period of time, they go away (so you’re not traveling with a cloud of loot )

This is an excellent idea.
1. It would eliminate the problem of unlooted bags.
2. Would eliminate the problem of running out of inventory space in the field.
3. Would still allow you the fun of opening bags and finding cool stuff, like yellows.
This is THE solution to the problem. I can think of no better!
Stacking loot bags right now is tricky because the bags actually reward stuff based on the level of the player you killed. Remember the vial of weak blood among the other lvl80 loot? Can be resolved by adding different bag types, though that creates more overhead.
And because I haven’t brought this up enough yet
JUST EMAIL US THE BLOODY LOOT BAGS!! Bam, problem solved. Nigh infinite room in the email in box (fix ya code if not) and no need to render and track extra stuff in WvW either.
I think what i hate the most is spamming F all the time, only to realize i’ve been carrying some warrior’s banner around with me for the past 20 seconds, lol.
people are zerging because it’s fun
I don’t think so…but seeing that you are from Drakkar Lake tells me everything i need to know.
I don´t think anyone can oppose to convenience. My index finger hurts sometimes…
Please just implement that everything is actually auto-looted when the setting is ticked on.
The feeling when you die and see your corpse surrounded by lootbags/chests is cringing as best..

lmao I don’t really like this idea…but I would get a kick out of a bunch of loot bags hounding me around the battlefield!

QFT. The current system is utterly broken. It’s getting more and more tiresome that ANet isn’t providing a fix for this.
I don’t think its broken, but I would love to see a auto loot system also, sometimes I get into fights that are prolonged, and I can’t spam F all the time because of randomly spawning bags, in PvE this is not so much a problem because PvE is so easy and mobs don’t place much of a problem, you also don’t have to worry about a massive zerg moving in, I can’t count how many times I am cleaning house with a few people getting bags everywhere but sticking with the fight and not worring about trying to push F to get all the bags, thinking once we wipe I can come back and get them…Then a big zerg moves in and wipes us, head back and they are still there holding the area etc not being able to get them. I think this kind of loot system just does not fit PvP, players and the dynamic they make, are nothing like PvE and we can’t always go back for loot or clean up after a “wave” etc, so a true auto loot system would be much welcomed.
Also, the zerging comments, good lord this is getting old, it’s WvW, you are going to have zerging, it’s a part of WvW, I see nothing wrong with it, or why people running in a larger mass should be punished, this coming from a solo roamer most of the time, almost never run with a zerg, so they do nothing for me, but steam roll me when I get caught off guard flipping a camp or killing another (what I thought was) solo roamer.
If you don’t like it because of FPS problems, get a better computer or stay out of the fight, or move to another BL or even lower tier server, there are more than enough ways to avoid zergs.
I’ve posted this a few times in the suggestions section and it never seemed to get any attention.
I’m hoping it does become a thing though. There’s no reason this shouldn’t have been in game since launch if you ask me.
The answer to this question during beta (when they made the band-aid fix of loot bags, since originally it was the same as PvE, you had to find the corpse….) was that the game engine itself needed a major overhaul to accomplish the loot——>inventory transition, as apparently it wasn’t possible to code into the current way the engine handles loot.
tl;dr

Honestly if they just made it as simple as “instead of popping up the ‘press F’ dialog, it just ‘pressed F’ for you,” people would be thrilled. It doesn’t have to be super complicated. People would have to be more careful about inventory management, but I doubt you’d get people complaining about that nearly as much as they’re complaining about the current system.
How many times I died because I was spamming “F” then I get over a dead allie and started reviving him so I couldn’t move and died… while I just wanted to take my bags :’(

Insulting people generally doesn’t help when you don’t have arguments.
Have coin and badges automatically go to your inventory. All the other items that drop is vendor trash anyways. If people want the items in the bags for salvage, they can spam F and get them.

That’s a horrible plan. 75% of the coinage you make in WvW is from vendoring that “vendor trash.” People want their loot. Not part of their loot.
Right now, people get “part” of their loot, and that’s what everyone is upset about.

I like this idea- fixes the problem. I assume Wooden chests and Steel Chests would have their own separate item, of course.
If this seems too easily abused (somehow?), perhaps a halfway measure- if you are defeated, any bags/chests that have dropped but which you haven’t opened are added to your backpack. Reduces the time wasted DURING battle, making you easily killed/useless to team, but leaves behind the celebratory bag hunt after wiping an enemy group.

“Scavengers” to each borderland that gather loot from fallen enemies. Then people can claim loot from them according to how many kills they’ve got.
I don’t mean there’s NPCs running around the BL gathering loot. Loot just magically goes to them, and you can grab it once in a while.

I don’t know their code, so I don’t know how hard this would really be, but remember they said something like this about why they couldn’t make siege BPs account bound.
Maybe we’ll get another coding miracle.
Greed wars is risky, but no one can see your damage or loot bags, so who cares!
I often run backwards away from pushes to loot before the end of a fight. This doesn’t make for good pvp, and it’d be nice if we didn’t have to click anything to take the bags. Maybe just walk within 5 yards of them or something to autoloot until full.
Considering I have seen exactly two steel chests in my time in wvw, the fact that one dropped and then I died before picking it up, then despawned just as I was 10 yards away after running back from respawning, makes me a firm believer in auto looting in wvw.
I guess in CK’s view of the world picking up that drop is better than being able to save your team – ‘oops sorry guys, didn’t use that skill I was too busy picking up my loot bags pressing F while running over ground covered in fields and combos and everything else that makes them invisible’.
Steel guarantees an exotic?
Because for wood (chests) I’ve gotten between nothing and an exotic. Maybe I wasn’t really paying attention to what it was I got the exotic from. I thought it was in a loot bag. I had 0 magic find at the time.
I like that the loot bags spawn at your feet instead of having to actually loot the person’s body. However, they are very difficult to notice, and I find myself spamming FFFFFFFFFFF in addition to my abilities. Even THEN… I will be dead or about to leave the area and notice that I missed a bag or two.
Things to help:
1)Make badges currency that automatically gets awarded instead of looted.
2)Make looting an AoE with a large range. Like press F once and loot all bags within a 1200 foot area.
3)And if Anet wants to go balls out…after implementing #2 above, make it so that you can loot the bags until you WP back.

How about that vendor trash stops dropping altogether then? Will that make your frown turn upside down?
Seriously though, just make the vendor trash be an equivalent coinage amount and have it go directly into your inventory.

As long as they compensate for it by raising other rewards, like giving you the cash value of that vendor trash instead of the bag.

Yes, please, drop all the grey trash from WvW (and PvE for that matter) and just give us the coin.
I love looting my bags off the corpses of fallen scrubs.

Looks like they gave us #2. It helps definitely but I would still prefer an auto looting system. If its never gonna happen then I soooo need to see #1 get implemented. Collecting badges has been the most difficult part of my Gift of Mastery for my legendary… Not to mention when I am not even thinking about badges the loot bags on the ground system totally destroys my immersion as I go OCD frantic looking for the bags that I know I have missed, and when I find one or two that makes it even worse going crazy looking for more that are likely not there. Plus auto loot is the only fix for when you’re lying on the ground dead looking at your loot wondering if you can run back in time, or even survive the run back to a now enemy location.
I agree that there needs to be a more significant change. I feel like Anet doesn’t want me to enjoy the same fruits of labor in WvW as I would get in PVE in 1/10th of the time invested. Knowing that I have lost loot that despawned before I could revive and return to get it infuriates me. If the WvW team, and or, Anet as a whole doesn’t want me to play WvW and have = reward as doing PVE I wish they would just come out and state it. I could then move on instead of hoping for equal treatment as the rest of the games playerbase.
