Not sure how you came to this conclusion. No one asked for the trinity. They asked to get credit for support abilities they use when they take up valuable slots on the bar and are darned useful to boot.

I agree that the reward for contribution system needs to be looked at.
Regarding those who try to dismiss this with “no holy trinity, learn to play” – I am afraid you do not know the width and breadth of viable builds in this game.
Nobody wants a DPS/Tank/Heal setup, and that isn’t what we are doing. We are playing SUPPORT, which is a different thing entirely. We are enabling our teammates to reach their maximum potential by ensuring that they are cleansed, buffed, and unafraid to push forward.
I play a support Guardian. Most of the time I play Staff/Hammer. Obviously, Guardian players will tell you that we switch weapons to meet the event pretty often.
Some times I use the Staff to control the battlefield. I can do this from mid-range, but it doesn’t include much damage. I earn basically no reward for this.
Other times I use the Hammer to hold the front line of battle. I am up there, keeping my allies alive and kicking. Giving AoE Protection and Retaliation to everyone, AoE Cleansing, spreading some Burns, AoE Might, and if I can find a water field some nice AoE Healing too. I also USE my virtues (especially if I am about to back up to mid-range). I earn some rewards here, usually only if I catch some moron trying to break our frontline and show him an up close and personal view of my Hammer.
Support is not Healing. Support is not Tanking. Support & Control are a little bit of both of those.

I would really love a dev comment on this. even if they want to stand by their guns and say they have no plans at compensating support builds.
This is applicable to pve and pvp. Not going to do more than bump it and say that people who do non damaging debuffs, buff others etc should be as much credit if they’re working just as hard. In any situation.

Ya it is applicable to pve as well, though I feel like it is more noticeable in WvW. The most notable situation is during keep/tower defenses. It seems like I can do my protection/support thing on an assault and as long as I am in the ring at the end I get credit for the assault. Defense is a completely different store…I would estimate that I get rewarded for MAYBE 10% of the defense “events” that I’m in (with the countdown timer). Granted I often don’t get rewards even when I do kill people during a defense (A bug I guess?), even with that fixed I would still be averaging less than half of all defense events do I get credit…even when during that ENTIRE time I am busy helping my teammates on the wall.
Reviving, blocking incoming damage, healing and dealing damage to enemies should all get the same credit in events (both PvE and WvW).
Currently, the event system heavily favors power/precision builds (much like many other games with public events, unfortunately). The trait/skill/weapon system is obviously designed to allow flexibility of playstyle, but the rewards system for events does not currently support this intention.

I really think this needs to at least be acknowledged by the devs. Like I said if they want to stick to it fine, but at least admit that your plan is to greatly encourage pure damage over support.
Another night of heavy supporting…I had several call outs in team chat (and on Teamspeak) about how useful I was being. I teamed up with a ranged guy who kept saying how much xp he was getting aoeing up on a wall, getting dozens of kills (I was running shields to keep him alive, and buffing him with my staff). In the 20 minutes we were there I didn’t get a SINGLE bit of xp, he said he was getting MANY kills. That is just wrong. We both knew that he would have been dead if I were running defense on him.
This needs to be addressed.
