Sea of Sorrows Battlecry
Quite a few great tactical WvW guilds to choose from on the SoS server. Plus with a great community of people that will offer support to guilds that decide to transfer.
The recruitment message aside, I do want to make a serious point here. I don’t think anyone would say that the T1 match-ups are balanced at the moment. The winner each week isn’t in much doubt, as the sides stand at the moment. With the complete removal of the population cap in the run-up to the end of free transfers, JQ took the opportunity to gain a big population advantage. Ignoring questions about the long-term viability of WvW, who can blame them? All of the major WvW worlds tried to do just that, because they wanted to be the best and, at the end of the day, the game is geared towards numbers.
So, bearing in mind the current state of T1 WvW, why do we do it? Why do we bother going out there every day against superior numbers when, as it stands, we just aren’t going to win? Well, for one, we have fun. Not a sort of cheerleading fun, where you’ve had to queue up for two hours just to get a pop at taking part, if you even did much. Not the “oh, we’re winning, this is fun” where all you’ve been doing is knocking down doors all day. No. On Sea of Sorrows, if we want to own a tower, we have to fight for it tooth and nail. If we want to roll over an enemy zerg, we have to be the more skilled team as, chances are, we’re not the more numerous one. We have fun because, for us, the game is much more challenging than it is and may ever have been for some of our enemies and when we do achieve something, that’s because we’ve put the effort in to make it happen.
Whether it’s running with the hard kitten that loves nothing more than smashing everything in his path, the folks that are just happy to be out there and having fun or the guys that sit around in a tower just before reset, enjoying nothing more than keeping that one little tower against anything you can throw against them… and, of course, drinking beer and chatting a lot of kitten. We don’t need to be the overall winner and we don’t need people who are obsessed with winning. Being #1 was kinda nice, I guess, but it wasn’t what it was about.
To put it all into perspective, my guild decided on Sea of Sorrows straight away as the beta weekends were coming up. We had international membership, so it made sense for us to go on a world that was being touted as “Oceanic” in full knowledge that that meant that there’d never be a truly slack time for whatever you wanted to do in the game. We were there and fighting when the week-long matches started and we got stuck being spawn camped by Eredon Terrace on four maps and we had to fight like hell just to get out and defend from one of the suitable supply camps for the afternoon. We’d have some amazing times just sitting on that measly 5ppt that we were getting from it and fighting off groups that outnumbered us massively. It was never “oh, we’ve got the outmanned buff, we don’t have a chance”, always “well, more karma for us!”.
As the ratings and rankings settled down and we ended up sitting at the top of T4 for a while, we kept fighting. The world was firmly mid-rate, but it didn’t bother us. We were just happy to go out there every day and fight. Some days we’d do well, other days nothing went right. The fights were there and they were challenging. Eventually we ended up taking an almost complete hiatus from WvW for several weeks though. Why? Transfers in. Don’t get me wrong, some of the people who’ve come in from transfers are amongst the more likable people I’ve met on this game. But, the rise up to T1 and the first couple of weeks after that weren’t a challenge. It’s not an interesting fight when you’ve started out engaging a group with roughly even numbers and then another 10-20 of your guys roll in and roll over their guys. With the greatest of respect to our enemies at the time and anyone currently in that situation, there is no real challenge to that. If you’re weighing it up and thinking “well, I could go to FotM, where I could do some relatively challenging PvE content and make like 3-5g in less than an hour or I could go to WvW, where we’d win either way and they can’t put up that much of a fight anyway”, which one are you going to pick?
Now though? We’re especially loving WvW again. If we want a fight, we can get on at any time, day or night, and it’s sitting right there for us. This weekend just gone I’ve had a couple of 8-10 hour sessions on WvW. Not because I’ve got some guild leader or someone breathing down my neck about how the PPT is looking bad and people need to spend another hour or two on to cover ‘til x, y or z comes on. I’ve spent that sorta time on it because I was actually having a lot of fun fights, which I never got whenever we were facerolling.
I know Sea of Sorrows has had question marks over its head since Jade Quarry became much more of a force than they previously were. I know they’d probably love for us to drop out of T1 as much as Blackgate or even Kaineng would love for themselves to be up in T1. Heck, even I’ve considered the question of whether it’s better for us to drop into T2 where we’d still get decent fights, but we would have less of a risk of people burning out trying to match Jade Quarry’s coverage. I did briefly support the idea, thinking that maybe it was a valid point when people say that the match is so unbalanced as to be completely unfair. But, no. I’m sorry to disappoint, but I’m sorry that the thought even crossed my mind. At the moment, the Tier is Jade Quarry’s to win or lose. I’m not saying we can’t or won’t drop, but I will say that you’re going to have to do better than you currently are if you want to get rid of us. Because right now, I’m sitting on a lot more than that one little supply camp that Eredon Terrace could keep us in.
I s’pose the tl;dr of this is simply that I’ve been having more fun in the past handful of weeks of WvW than I ever was when Sea of Sorrows was #1. As far as I’m concerned, for anyone actually considering transferring, Sea of Sorrows does not and will not be interested in being a stacked world. It’s not fun for us. For some folks who do actually appreciate a challenge and always having people to fight, rather than being obsessed with just winning, maybe this is the world for you.
Exactly, so anyone interested lets get things going here. We got the fight waiting doesn’t someone else want to fight it?

xD
I always appreciated the fight you guys put up. Even when we were siege capped and entrenched inside your spawn area. Some of you never gave up and kept mesmer pulling us off that waterfall even though we were wiping you near your Lions Arch portal.
Good times (I hope you got some laughs in as well) and I salute you for it.
I always enjoyed seeing the name RUIN, it usually meant a treb was on some odd placed cliffside in middle of no where where you couldn’t get to, and meant every fight you had was under fire of treb XD
I swear, could be a one on one in middle of no where and if RUIN was involved, there be a treb still.
