Why are Thieves so awful?
I rolled a thief because I’m trying all classes, and because I think it’s true you have to play something to understand it. I’ve found they’re not an “I win” button by any means. I’ve also found I still can’t read other thieves’ minds and know where they are in stealth just because I use it to, so that suggestion rarely helps. I’m still learning of course.
Basically they’re an anti-social class, able to roam better than others and survive in a non-supported non-supporting way that sets them apart from the others (in wvw anyway.) Stealth and thief gameplay is impossible to balance with the rest because it’s just so different than other classes’ gameplay. This isn’t to say it’s bad or should be removed, it’s just totally different. I’m not sure they’re meant to offer group value, as the OP puts it. It seems intended that they’re loners.

I agree with your third line of your sig..I also agree that if you rolled a war and went into wvw you would get rolled hard because the class won’t carry you.

I don’t think thief should get any more group value. It’s just class diversity. The playstyle fits the name. Thief is terrible in large fights, strong in small fights >5v5, and excellent solo.
Also, 4 second revealed was a lazy nerf and the wrong way to do it since it just equalizes bad and good players by slowing everything down. I do think stealth could use some tweaks to be a little less troll-y. Possibly in exchange for some buffs as well.

I am sure most of these people have never played a thief and have no idea how squishy they are and how slow their dps really is. As a thief if your not using sword you cant touch a bunker and that is what 60% of wvw is. They also have no idea how little room for error there is do to the low hp.
Edit: edit if you guys played thieves you would know there is multiple specs to play if you use sword it plays kind of like a sword mesmer if you play pistols it plays a bit like a ranger/eng if you play sb you get aoe and there are a tone of really fun other traits to play with.
There is nothing wrong with the class apart from dmg balance between thief weapon sets cluster bomb and the sword flurry 3 skill does to much dmg and pistols do to little.
Now I hate being this guy but thieves are a free kill unless they catch you off guard most of the time my rapid fire one shots them so stop making dumb mistakes and there will be no need to QQ.

thieves are seems skilled because there is no way to punish them when they dont kill you on first attempt
here’s why
thieves use initiative instead of cooldowns on weapon skills converting initiative to CD I will get the 8sec the longest weapon skill CD
there is also this problem when enough of initiative I can spam the same skill again and again
So what happens… thief attack me he screws and dont manage to kill me → hide in shadow → wait 10sec → attack again… Thief can again use any ability, I cannot (cool downs up to 45sec on some weapon skills)
That is the main problem with thieves
