Developers should simply adopt the system used in most popular multiplayer games like FPS etc. I.e. introduce ranks which would be automatically assigned to players for accomplishing certain criteria like number of invaders killed, number of camps/outposts/keeps/garrisons capped etc.
To shed some light on practical implementation I would personally award the first rank to people killing 10 invaders, capping 5 camps ankittenep etc. The next rank would require 50 invader kills, capping 20 camps, 5 keeps etc. For the rank of Commander I would personally set a requirement of 1000 invader kills, 200 camps/ 50 outposts/ 20 keeps/ 5 garrisons capped and at least one successful siege of Stonemists Castle. After this achievement has been completed the player would simply receive something like a “Gift of the Commander” which would be a requirement aside from the usual 100g to receive the rank of Commander from that ugly guy in the Citadel.
Since GW2 already has an achievement infrastructure that can support this it would in my opinion be trivial to implement.
