So Need Your “Thinking Out of the Box” ideas and suggestions to revolutionize WvW!

So first thing let’s list what we currently have (The box). I will edit my post everytime somebody adds to this:

1. Scoring by PPT every few mins.
2. 24/7 scoring.
3. 3 realms per weekly match up.
4. 4 maps in wvw (5 if you count OS) and 3 identical BL maps.
5. Glicko rankings determining matchups.
6. 24 realms.
7. Use of siege and supply.
8. Objective capture and upgrade for score.
11. Map queues. (eotm supposedly solves this. nope.)
12. Dependence on coverage and population.
13. wvw ranks

Now post your ideas:

example: Maybe more maps and realms per match up instead of 3? Get rid of those 3 identical BL maps and make them unique? Maybe lessen/merge the realms? Or we can have realm alliances in a single team? Maybe a world boss objective where teams would fight for the chance to kill it?

I know a lot of the players here have really smart and ingenious ideas (especially to counter the current idea of PPT and coverage) so glad post them here and make everybody and Anet see them.

I am sorry to tell you this but it doesnt matter if any of our ideas are out of the box or in the box, the devs simply will not work on them! In a recent interview, Devon actually states that they are not currently working on anything for WvW, maybe just minor fixes.

And if they do, it will be a year or more for them to do it, and it’ll be the simplest thing they can do!

We asked for coloured tags at launch! It’s taken 2 years!

I’ll copy/paste what I wrote in a thread I posted a few days ago. As Pink says, it most likely wont amount to anything and not everyone will agree with changes that people post, but highlighting the need for change and at least trying to think of ways to fix things never hurts.

After the tournament all servers are empty, everyone chooses a server just for WvW (since they don’t matter in pve anymore) and the servers are all soft-capped so you can’t join a server that has more than 50 active players more than the others.
Not logging into WvW for a fortnight removes you from the server (reducing the servers population). If you go back to WvW, you have to reapply for that server or choose another.
That would give players the chance for free transfers or you can pay gems to change server immediately just as they have it set now.
With this system, since no server would have should have no more than 50 more active players than any other server, it would allow tournaments and matchups to include all servers and not have to be split into tiers, allowing more matchup variety and make fights more evenly spread instead of people being rewarded for stacking.

I also posted a clarification for the cap: The servers would be capped at, say, 500 players with a +/- of 50 players. Once a server has 50 players more than the least populated server, it cannot allow other players in, once the other servers catch up, people would be allowed to transfer to that server again.
The cap isn’t for players online at the time, but rather overall players allowed on a server for that given week, it would be up to the players themselves to decide when to log in etc.
So players that stop playing are booted from the server, lowering the population and if it gets to 50 players less than the other servers, then those servers cannot increase their numbers until that server makes up it’s playerbase.
This fix is for an overall population fix, not a fix for nightcapping.

they are only interested in doing small changes, because as we’ve seen there is no WvW team, so they can only do small things like coloured tags, which take a day to code, but 2 years to release!

One thing every one wants is new BL maps.
Last year Devon or another mod/dev claimed it takes 6 months to design and test a map.
So a year later I’ve been asking, Where is our new map?
Finally a mod said it doesnt take 6 months, it takes far far longer!

It took 8 months to makes EOTM map from start to finish?!
So seems contradictory to me there!

WvW desperately needs something new. New maps will do a lot to refresh it, even if it is bugged (cos its not like the current ones are free from bugs and glitches!)

I have even suggested create a map for one side of a server, copy and pate it, rotate 120 degrees, paste again and rotate another 120 degrees. Now add bridges and other ways to get from one to the other. Map development time cut by 66%!! So even if it takes a year to make one WvW BL map, this can cut it down to 4 months!

A brainstorm thread?

-End WvW map, make one global with several BL like a Tyria map each BL was the part in tyria that correspond to that server name, as example northern shiverpeaks will be in the north part of the shiverpeaks with gale storms slowing down enemies each map could have is own buff/unbuff.
Each 5-7 days a chest would spawn in the keep/castle with some rare stuff. presecursors inclueded.
It would be a fun way to bring war back to tyria, making WvW a pve/pk enviroment with castle siege and conquering map for your guild/faction.

-movable siege
-end of siege tower to keep, one of the best joke in mmo combat mechanics.
-make walls sturdier a few guild catas can take maxed walls in few seconds.

-improve game to be an actual challange and not promoting the easy playing placebo to stuck player on game and pretend he is good.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

OMG I love Aeolus.3615 idea!

Not only that but it will also allow GvGs to happen all over the world map!
Those not sure how the megaserver bit will work, perhaps make separate single server with a higher capacity? But then will that affect culling again and bring more lag?

But the idea of having a separate Tyria world map dedicated to WvW, and servers being assigned their corresponding zones could work.
You have to protect your zone, can invade others, and for GvG you have to run through one or several enemy zones to actually get to a guild you want to fight.

But, the big issue here is that the Tyria map was designed for PvE, not PvP and as such different zones will have different balances. So even if this was considered the time spent balancing would be better spent on new WvW maps, cough cough, I mean Living Story :P

A huge PVE – like connected maps sounds exciting definitely but on a smaller scale :P few maps for capping and some maps for clashes. so like 5 different maps for example and one map in the middle with few or no objectives where all realm’s maps can be accessed from.)

I think that WvW would benefit greatly from more opponent variety. I’m for all random match ups and destruction of tiers. The instant problem is how a low pop server will fight a high pop one. Well do I have a solution

Some real life games have smart scoring systems where you don’t just play to get one more point then your opponent. They have scoring systems that take into consideration your skill level and set your goals accordingly. That means player A who is a full on pro has different winning goals then a player B, complete newb. That makes match of A and B possible as they do not directly compete against each other but rather they try to reach their own goals. From what I remember, golf has a scoring system like that. You can in theory beat Tiger Woods in golf. No kidding.

In short words we have to move this system to WvW and implement some rewards from winning the weekly match. But instead of giving reward to server with most % of points we give a reward to one who was closer to their goal.

Example! We have 3 serwers
Server 1. High pop, full on zerg, we fear no doors edition
Server 2. Med pop, some zerging capabilities, door may be a threat
Server 3. Low pop, few people on map, fear of the doors

In current system server 1 will win all the time but if you set goals like this:
Server 1 80%
Server 2 15%
Server 3 5%
Then suddenly all servers have a fighting chance. Even server 3, with some night capping and ninja borderlanding can get 6% of points and win a matchup. This would allow for more opponent variety and way more interesting gameplay as your server is never destined to lose. Because of that we could even implement WvW weekly rewards!

So there’s this one MMO I used to play where it was Race vs Race vs Race and scheduled wars in one map will happen every six or eight hours where you should hit and destroy a very high HP objective of the other race. The only downside of that game was there was no upscaling and downscaling for balance and the usual grinding for level and gear, then the everywhere including PVE areas were basically also PK areas where high levelled bullies from other races can PK you while you level or grind for $$. A good side is that there is no scoring and there is a reward for winning that particular war also you can have fights basically anytime and anywhere without having to worry much about ppt also gets rid of coverage gaps.

Maybe we can derive some ideas from this model and make it more applicable, more useful, and more exciting for gw2.

The only flaw with this idea is that whilst servers will have a chance of winning, it wouldn’t stop larger servers from dominating in fights.

I wouldn’t mind losing so much if it meant fights didn’t consist of being steamrolled by a zerg 3 times the size of your group.

But since we put rewards in, you will have a motivation to log in. If you outsmart and outmanoeuvre them you will get your chest of epic loot and they will get nothing (good day sir). This is a very anti zerg mechanic as zerg is like a finger of god. It destroys anything it points at but can only point at one thing at a time.

I just meant that for me (and possible many others) most of the fun of WvW comes from the fights and social aspect of the game mode rather than the rewards. I didn’t mean to say your idea was bad.

I didn’t mean to come off as brash, for a while now we’ve been matched with a server that can have 2 or more zergs on a map that outnumber even our biggest zerg and we’ve been struggling to keep any of our positions on any map – it’s left me a bit bitter as of late.

Population imbalances are a part of the game unfortunately. I was just thinking about rewards as something to wipe your tears with. Oh, and you are not bashing, we are just discussing the idea.

Mobile sieges
Upgrades depend on how many camp you own (example 0 camp connected to your tower: your tower is wood, all the camps fully upgraded things)
We place towers
New trick: black powder keg (can dmg walls)
New rewards at vendors
Remove drop and xp, add lvling tomes and boxes, mat/gear bags to the venders for badges
Repeatable achivements
Nerf sieges to not damage through gates and walls
Let everybody to use a siege or damage it

How about a system similar to the frost area of EOTM for the borderlands?

If you invade an enemy borderland and outnumber the enemy you’re hit with a 50% movement debuff called “Intimidated” or “Laziness” that can only be removed by holding all 5 ruins. Outnumbered defenders could fight the small groups holding the ruins and keep the debuff active to slow down and hinder large forces allowing easier defense. Would also let those nice cannons at the ruins actually get used.

Could be a nice use for the ruins and a fitting change for the now mostly useless “Outnumbered” buff.

I’ve always wanted a conquest wvw mode. It’s similar to aeolus’s idea but goes a bit deeper than that to work similar to how the conquest mode of Total War works.

WvW: the whole of the world of tyria (all pve) is divided in to the territories it has now. Each week each server gets one of the major cities as it’s base of operations (Hoelbrak, Black Citadel, Divinity’s reach, Rata Sum, The Grove). Lion’s arch contains the Stonemist castle we know now. Servers earn score for each territory they control.

Within each territory there will be 5 or so supply camps, 3-5 towers and 1-2 keeps. The keeps will have waypoints in them. There will otherwise be no way to get into a territory other than running there. To gain the points for a territory your side must control the keeps and the majority of the towers.

Supply would exist as it does now. A new concept is introduced though: supply lines. When you control a territory there will be supply caravans which move between the territories you have. These deliver supply to the frontline. They will be heavily armed so that it takes more than a few people to take one out (like 10 players required). Supply caravans travel from the keeps closer to your base of operations to keeps farther out. A new caravan spawns when a keep has maxed out supply and yaks deliver supply to it. Each caravan carries 1000 supply. Capturing a caravan lets you loot the supply for your own use.

Within each territory you get yak caravans from the supply camps there to every objective. These are like the yaks we have now.

Conquest mode would add the following changes
- Waypoints at keeps remain contested for 20 seconds longer after the defend event ends. If the defend event starts up again the waypoint will remain contested.
- White swords appear immediately on the objective if it was previously contested and attacked again within 20 seconds of the last defend event.
- Catapults, ballistas, arrow carts can be moved by their original builder of if they’re within 1200 units of a commander. Any amount of siege owned by the commander may be moved while he is near, otherwise up to 2 siege weapons can be moved. Trebuchets can be “packed” to be moved. Packing and unpacking a trebuchet takes about 1 minute. Players moving siege move 10% slower and are not affected by any speed buffs (runes, signets, swiftness).
- Ballistas are more accurate and lead their targets. Ballista bolts also pierce. The explosive one may trigger multiple times if it passes through multiple targets.
- Keeps have waypoints instantly.
- Towers get burning oil for free. All siege weapon lines shift up one slot.
- Towers and keeps new upgrade: Siege Engineers (replaces waypoint upgrade)- Spawns NPCs to operate siege which players do not operate within the tower. Up to 10 siege weapons may be manned by the engineers. A player can take over a siege weapon from an NPC at any time. NPCs will not operate catapults or trebuchets. NPCs on ballistas will prefer to shoot siege first.
- Keeps and towers gain 2 workers for free.
- Worker upgrade replaced with scout upgrade: Scout upgrade places NPC scouts (5) on the walls. These will send reports to the team chat when more than 5 enemies are spotted near the tower or keep and will also shout when the tower or keep becomes contested.

I do believe a dev did say they were working on something similar to this, that if there are more than a given number of players in an area, all players will received a debuff.

The fact that they acknowledged this and said they are working on it, expect it to go live in a year or two :/

A smaller map (castle ruins) with only 1 capture point in the middle (like king of the hill), a straight team death match zone, where each kills is worth 5 PPT and rounds are 1 hour.

Scoring system based on PK.
Bit of a broken record here but…
A solution i had thought of for the domination of coverage is to make player kills contribute more points to the score than objectives, say 5 points per kill, up to 10 with bloodlust. This is not on-stomp, but purely kills.

The idea behind this one is that coverage proves domination because the it is much easier for a larger server to take objectives. Now it is also easier for that server to make kills but when a server vastly outnumbers another server in a time slot then that server will make fewer kills per-hour than when they’re evenly matched. This would shift the deciding factor of the score into time slots where servers are more evenly matched.
