I really think that rewards need to be higher on the list, maybe not a nr. 1 priority, but higher than "fix or revert DBL.
This will not only bring old players back, but also bring new players to WvW. And we all know that WvW need more players.

I haven’t really been a part of this discussion since I’m among those on a break, and before that HoT baited me into PvE. I missed the peak activity in the new borderlands (if there was one, at least the first day presumably).

As a solo roamer, I have actually very much enjoyed the new borderlands. The layout and mechanical themes. The battles not so much. The sense of size and sparse population generally means I can solo too many things with very little response from the enemy, and I cannot respond to enemies taking our objectives too easily.

I think the design is overall good, the population vs size problem might be related to there being 3 of them. It’s design seems suited to EBg style battles, which only can happen on one central map. I think this new borderlands should be reduced to only 1 instance, with the “Home” world on rotation. Maybe rotate after the home-world earns a certain number of points from the map? Daily rotation would be too fast. Though if scoring is dismissed as irrelevant, no fast-rotation would be fun enough.

AS the population decreases those extra maps disappear within the hour.

The thing is though, I literally know thousands of WvW players that have left Gw2, and not a single one that would return for rewards. I know MANY that would return if WvW gives them nonstop challenging, strategic, fun, PvP action. Bringing the Alpine back just gets them back in the door, WHILE they work on fixing WvW. They wont come back at all unless that happens now. If they can make wvw in GW2 the best large scale PvP on the market, they will come from all over. Rewards are not what does that, as many are willing to pay a monthly sub for that on other games instead of needing in game rewards. Rewards should be an incentive to do more in WvW, not to get them to play the game.

LOL you are just worried about them Queuing our maps again like they did when they hit Gari.. for the lower tiers it would be very helpful. High tiers would have maps all the time. I do understand that when you build siege you want to keep it, that is why I think the higher tiers should start out with more maps than just 1. During NA prime when all maps are queued is when they would need temp maps to reduce the queue as long as you know which is which you should be fine.

1. Stability & skill balance

I believe I speak for the entirety of my guild (which is on an indefinite break) when I say that this is very much appreciated.
There’s already been a lot of good posts about balance. I’d just like to draw attention to three issues in particular:

1. Boon removal, and how it now rips random boons. This gives you the same problem as the excessive CC. Your stability will be ripped off with no warning and you’ll die before you can possibly react. Boons need to be stripped in order – the most recently applied first – so you can use cover boons to protect stab.

2. Resistance uptime. With a buff to stab, boonshare compositions will potentially become a problem. It’s largely considered a gimmicky crutch in the community already, and with better stability it may end up too strong. I don’t think the resistance boon itself will pose significant problems as long as it requires good rotations (i.e. each application has a short duration and it’s not possible to keep it up 100% of the time), but the ability to pre-stack >1 minute of it will probably need to be addressed.

3. If, as I’m very much hoping, you take measures to reduce the overall level of damage (which was massively inflated by the June patch and HoT), protection uptime may also end up being a bit high, mainly due to tempest. Perhaps lowering the number of times it can stack in duration (in order to encourage good prot rotation) would be a good idea.

I know what I say will upset some people but here are my thoughts.

I would hate to see the work put into the dbl go to waste as they are truly beautiful maps. I’ve had some of my best fights on them and they aren’t bad to navigate once you learn.

What I would say though is perhaps change it so that holding towers gives some strategic advantage. Like in the old bls you could treb garrison from the north towers etc. If not moving the towers maybe introduce a buff of sorts for holding them that makes capping keeps easier/ harder (if you’re the holder of the keep.) This would force people to strategically think about taking a tower to assist with the siege of a keep.

Either way, I vote for keeping the new bls as they offer more variety, they just need some tweaking. The Alpine bls are rather bland in design and I don’t think they should replace the new things for the sake of nostalgia. Ebg is also bland by comparison since hot and I believe it needs tweaking or a remodel. Actually make smc a castle and not a glorified keep used as a supply dump. But that’s less important.

I quite like the new BLs as well, there are some things I absolutely hate and things that drives me crazy like barricades (For the love of Oprah, make them go away!), but just with few changes the map would actually be really amazing. There are so many people who tried the map maybe once and then decided it’s crap without giving it a chance by actually trying to learn the layout. I find it really sad that WvW players seem to suffer for alzheimers, because we indeed did ask for a new map. Before HoT WvW forums did have at least one “Why won’t we get any new maps!? sPvP and PvE has gotten several!!!!11!” topic in the first page every week.

Coming from a havoc guild and roamer:

1) Map rotation. I like the Desert Borderlands but there is no strategic element to them. If we take a fortified north tower, I want to be able to treb gari from it. In the Alpine Borderlands you had to defend your North and South West Tower as they could be used offensively.

That being said, some of the most fun outnumbered fights have been had on the DBL. The small choke points around Air and Fire keep are great for smaller groups.

- 2 weeks Alpine, 1 week Desert rotation?

2) Stability. Revert the stack changes. Seperate WvW skills.

3) Scoring/Population Balance

4) Autoloot! The first thing I specifically went for when HoT came out was autoloot for WvW, as it was stated in a GW2 stream that it could be used in WvW.

5) Rewards in general but specifically defending/scouting (Not sure how scouting would work) needs better rewards.

Bonus: The guild hall arena was meant for GvGs yet it uses PvE retaliation instead of WvW retaliation. That means each tick of retal hits for 100-150 extra compared to in WvW. We’ve had to stop using the guild hall and go back to WvW/EotM to GvG.

After some thought, I think removing Desert Borderlands in favour of Alpine Borderlands could be a mistake.

People mainly want Alpine Borderlands because;

1. It’s smaller
2. It’s flatter
3. Not as many “extra events” as the flames and the oasis

Then there’s a lot of nostalgia going around for it too.

Alpine Borderlands is in no way a bad map, but neither truly is Desert Borderlands. What the new borderland needs is some changes in how you can take yourself around the map easier, and making it easier to navigate.

We have a new map, and while it has gotten bad reviews we shouldn’t chase it away. I know people want to chase it away because in the past, we knew ArenaNet didn’t touch WvW for a long, long time, so it’s better to have something we like, and remains unchanged, right?

Well, we have an opportunity here, and I think EVERYONE should get an objective view over this, actually take a thought to it instead of rushing your opinion because the rushed thought went down in the community.

Roll back it all, back to old Alpine Borderlands, or save Desert Borderlands, in hope MO’b & Co tweaks it to a more fitting map?

Tempest earth overload was nerfed a while ago now, only 1 stack of prot will remain.

I do like the new borderlands but I do feel they are too time consuming to get around.

I wouldn’t want to go back to the old maps, they were great but I feel they were too plain.

I also prefer 5-10 person group encounters over the massive zerg battles…although I wouldn’t change that for EB because there is also a place for that too.

I already made my top, but I forgot 1 that really is important in my oppinion,

→ If pve players can get acess to ascended gear, WVW players should also be able to do it with the badges and the proofs of heroics.

Regarding the proofs of heroics, make them account bound and a currency of wvw. It is stupid to stack stack stck these proofs if we play mostly only 1 toon.

Make them a currency and able to buy ascended gear and weapons with it.

WVW Pplayers should be treated like pve players!!

If you want to revert the stability change, you need to question the 5 target aoe cap.

This limit allowed players/guilds to pack into a strong and unstoppable melee train and you thought stability was the issue.
You added stacks on it then the metagame changed to an unhealthy pirateship one.

You need to reconsider those two variables, they’re tied to each other.

I think Arenanet is better off improving the Desert BL maps. The Desert BLs are great, they just need to be less difficult to travel from point A to point B. Verticality works great on the Air keep, but having it on the rest of the map makes it hard to navigate.

The Desert Bls are a great addition to GW2, and should be improved on instead of discarded. A lot of these people are joining the hate bandwagon and think that bringing back the Alpine solves half of the problems for them. Alpine borderlands are stale and boring, we’ve been playing in them for hundreds/thousands of hours. WvW needs fresh stuff, and an improved desert BL would be the best choice.

The Desert BLs have great mechanics that disencourage mindless zerging (like shrines) and they’re an amazing feat from GW2’s designers. Discarding them would be wrong.

Thread suggestions are often not taking lessons from the past.

What I found so frustrating about Guild Wars 2 more than anything was that ArenaNet singlehandedly rejected some of the things that made the brand and the game great: Guild versus Guild and Dynamic Events. Where Dynamic Events are concerned, I believe they abandoned the process because it significantly reduced their revenue potential rather than the raw Living World model.

The above quote is the majority opinion of those who bought the game for WvW and then left before Desert Borderland. I’ve spoken with such people in the hundreds, as they were deciding to leave. The common theme was never so specific. It was simply that they were done. It had left them wanting (which indicates that the game was good) but they felt under-delivered as time passed. It didn’t hold them in the ways they felt it had promised.

Interestingly, ArenaNet did specifically address that quote with Heart of Thorns.

Perhaps the reason that the game is still leaking WvW players is something more fundamental, beneath the surface of all of these “top list” easy-mode answers that are guaranteed to make one party cheer at another party’s displeasure.

The fundamental problem I see:

  • WvW is a diluted RvR
  • scored by the 5v5 PvP capture-point system with longer distances between the points
  • operating under the PvE combat ruleset
  • with PvE reward bolted on through loot-drop and gold medals for being present.

It is a problem of staleness, from the original WvW design having now run its course. The top-list suggestions are all well and good, as they provide a sense of what will please the most people immediately.

Just don’t forget that the majority is not simply unaware of this thread. The majority left the game because they were done with the game, and the people who returned for HoT found that the game was exactly as they had left it; then they left again.

I actually like the Desert Borderlands, playing in T2. Outright scrapping seems a poor idea. Putting them into a rotation of some sort seems the better plan, since it seems there’s a lot of nostalgia for Alpine.

Actually since I started playing WvW I was always challenged by why all three BLs for Green Blue Red were all mirror images of each other, why not three maps of Blue gets Alpine, Red gets desert and Green gets what… well, something forest / jungle TBD? Those are the themes in EOTM I suppose. EBG certainly isn’t some kind of three-lobed symmetrical shape, each third of the map has its differences.

I suppose it might still lead to complaints of “oh no our home BL is (whichever one is too boring and flat or too vertical and complex) so I’m totally quitting”, well, then go play on your favourite kind of BL and rack up points on enemy turf, that’s what it’s there for anyhow.

The rest of the 5 apparent priorities I’m pretty good with (a reward track in particular sounds like it’d relieve a long standing complaint of grinding PvE to fund WvW food/gear/guild upgrades), just hoping the “fix / revert” BL thing is approached with a real open mind.

Should also take into account many guilds (read: individuals contributing to their guilds) have already poured an ocean of gold (worth RL$) into disliked, but “well here they are like them or not” systems re: tactivation schematics and auras and things so extreme suggestions like “and while you’re at it, rip out the tactivators as a map fix bc it’ll bring back my guild” should also be approached with care.

I love the DBL but I havent been able to enjoy it much because of population issues. Id much rather see a rotation than flat out removing the DBL. Alternatively keep the DBL as an optional map like Edge of the mists.

Defending needs to be more rewarding. Atm reward is tied to if you have an arrow cart or not. player loot.

Proof of heroics needs a change. Soulbound “currency” like that just takes up space on too many characters.

Edge of the Mists should be looked at again, objectives like the statuary are hardly if ever used. These objectives should function as an advantage rather than another “node” to flip.

WvW could also do with a reliable way of getting ascended armour. A bunch of Proof of Heroics and some gold for example. Seeing as armor rarity does affect performance in WvW I dont see why its still gated behind rng and crafting when WvW provides those materials so scarcely.

And if you have room for a 6th “minor” thing: Have the WvW rank bonuses converted to the mastery system.

On short term basis:
- Bring the alpine borders back for now
- Revert the stability change to the way it was before
- Make the proof of heroics accound bound
- Increase money reward from caps slightly

Long term suggestions:
- More effects for the undermanned buff, like more durability to guards, siege needs less supply, increase supply carry capasity, the things that affect the whole map and give fewer players possibility to achieve more against bigger numbers.
- After some fixes in desert borderlands, bring them back in rotation with the alpine borders or something and maybe at some point make some new www maps to add to the variety.
- Give us a www specific armor set/wings/backpiece/weapon set or something to work for (purchaced with badges, proof of heroics, and maybe add some other loot from www that would be needed)
- WWW season!
- Skill balance / world populations balance etc.

This is a great thread. It’s constructive. We’re all reading it and referring to it in team discussions.

As we said in the AMA, our top internal priorities have been population balance and rewards. From this thread, your top five priorities are, in order:
1. Stability & skill balance

5. Scoring

Yes, we will take the feedback and make stability, general skill balance, and fixing/reverting DBL our top priorities. We’re not currently working on scoring and that has to be a longer-term project.

Karl is working specifically on WvW-focused skill balance. He’s looking for the wins for WvW that don’t screw the rest of the game.

I want to reiterate that everything we work on either ships in April or starts beta-testing on Live servers in April. We’re locking down dev work for the April release soon — next up is localization, QA, integration and regression testing — but we’ll extend the deadline for WvW skill balance.

There is one thing that doesn’t need to get wrapped up into the April release: Friday night resets. That doesn’t require a Live build. We’ll do it.

I too, would welcome the return of Alpine Maps. Reason? Traveling over the DB map is extremely time-consuming and frustrating when quickly trying to reach an objective. I would prefer to engage in combat rather than running around maze-like structures and canyons.

However, some people like the DB map, so why not use it as a new map for EB or EoTM?

Please reinstate the guild upgrades we worked for and earned, but which were taken from us on the release of HoT.

Please allow us to use Proofs of Heroics account-wide, instead of soul-binding them.

WvW Seasons might help to inject some interest amongst players who are currently feeling a little jaded.

Reverting stability won’t fix anything by itself. Anet would also have to make boon stripping to not be random again, because even with the old stability you would rely on RNGesus. If it randomly decides to strip your stab, you will still die (regardless of stacks or duration).

I think the big things are:
1. Bring back the old stab from a year ago, give people a reason to go back to actual fighting, not just ranging each other for ever.
2. Bring back the Alpine map until you can make changes to the Dessert Borderlands map. If you are going to put some of the new tactivators in the alpine map please increase the time in between activations, they are currently too strong for how often you can get them. For the Dessert Map changes bring everything in closer, remove some of the height elevation and less chokes. Need it to be easier to move around the map.
3. Population balance and scoring I feel if you fix either population or if you fix scoring could at least partially if not totally fix the other so I would do either one or the other at first at see how it plays out before doing both.
4. Loot/ unused wvw levels, Loot needs to be improved be that wvw tracks similar to pvp where loot comes in faster or have if you get a certain amount of each thing you get bonus loot and that resets each week. Also for all those wvw players who have been loyal to the game mode for so long should be given something to use their extra level ups for, be that you can use it to buy armor or siege or even maybe wvw tokens.
5. remove the ability to tap things or make it harder, I hate seeing keeps being tapped by one person running up to a gate and hitting it once and it being tapped or shooting a guard on the wall making it tapped. Recommendations here is to make it so that a certain damage threshold needs to be meet for it to occur.
6. Remove EotM, EotM was meant to be a place where you went if you were stuck in a queue, with queues not being a issue other then EB, get rid of EotM so we can get more players into wvw to actually fight and also stop people from going to EotM to get supplies for repairs or making big pushes on other maps.

I don’t have 5 priorities. Just 2…the rest of it isn’t all that important to me.

First and foremost:

1) Revert back to the Alpine Maps sans Desert BL mechanics. I simply don’t like the desert BL’s for all of the previously mentioned reasons by so many people

2) Stability is an issue. Though the underlying issues may be more related to mastery skills in WvW. Some of which have literally changed the gameplay for the worse.

But I could live with/without # 2.

If #1 was instituted, I’d start playing again, lol.

However, some people like the DB map, so why not use it as a new map for EB or EoTM?

The fallout of EB being removed in favour of the desert map would be something to witness…

As we said in the AMA, our top internal priorities have been population balance and rewards. From this thread, your top five priorities are, in order:
1. Stability & skill balance
2. Fix or revert DBL
3. Rewards
4. Population balance
5. Scoring

Yes, we will take the feedback and make stability, general skill balance, and fixing/reverting DBL our top priorities. We’re not currently working on scoring and that has to be a longer-term project.

Karl is working specifically on WvW-focused skill balance. He’s looking for the wins for WvW that don’t screw the rest of the game.

We’re investigating whether to fix or revert DBL. They’re both a lot of work. These next couple days will be your last chance to give feedback before we make a decision, so speak now or forever hold your peace.

I want to reiterate that everything we work on either ships in April or starts beta-testing on Live servers in April. We’re locking down dev work for the April release soon — next up is localization, QA, integration and regression testing — but we’ll extend the deadline for WvW skill balance.

There is one thing that doesn’t need to get wrapped up into the April release: Friday night resets. That doesn’t require a Live build. We’ll do it.

Does this mean we will see a patch sooner rather than later? The reason I ask is the longer the patch is delayed, the more players WvW will lose. If it comes out at the end of the year, I am afraid it will be too late (WvW will be dead) and the only people that will be playing are the PPT mayvens and servers.

If you just reverted the Stability nerf, that would bring a lot of players back. That would be a start in the interim (the removal of the Oasis event was a good move also).

The other things that people want to see removed is the Siege Generators, ALL THE BANNERS (I mean Dragon, etc.), the Tactivators, and the Air Ship defense.

1. Autoloot. Seriously, why am I still spamming F F F in the middle of a fight?

2. Weekly/monthly border rotation. Alpine and Desert. Because having only 2 maps (EB and single border) gets old pretty fast. Also many people got used to deserts and wouldn’t want to see them go (myself included). Deserts do need some rework tho.

3. Rewards for winning a matchup. Not personal reward-tracks, but server-wide. Like having some new valuable vendor or siege/gear discounts for the winning side. Because WvW is about worlds, not a single person, right? Right?

4. Some in-game WvW advertisement, maybe? I’ve seen people with 5k+ AP who aren’t aware that WvW exists

5. Remove EOTM or cut out WvW rewards out of it. EOTM isn’t WvW, EOTM is just another HOTM and should not contribute to personal WvW progression.

1. Revert borderlands map to the old one (I know the new one was a lot of work, sorry about that, but I don’t like it, only like the graphics)
2. Add PvP reward track to WvW (just copy and paste the PvP one, excluding the PvP only track lines, adding WvW only ones)
3. Reduce the number of Worlds to 6? (that for sure will fix population problems, keep the top 6 and gives free transfers to the rest)

“DBL are fine they just take too long to navigate through so we should keep them” is one argument while the other is “Bring back ABL!” DBL should be kept, but reworked. The navigation or size isn’t a problem the real issue is that structures hold no strategic value over objectives that your battalion (zerg) is working to overthrow. A relocation of structures, bare minimum PvE inspired events, and gliding should be added if you wish to keep the maps. I vote for ABL mainly, because of the strategic value as well for the simplicity. Though how long will that enthusiasm last? Think about it.

As for stability, please rethink this change. The idea is sound, but there is way too much boon removal! Think about it… Whether you add it back in or not it will make no difference with this horrid CC. Melee will just get countered again with Boon rips/etc rendering it worse than before since no changes are being made to CC. Lets face it! What is so fun about endless red pools of CC? In addition, look into the AoE player caps/effective radius.

Now REWARDS! No way in Tarzan’s mind will a player stay especially come back if there is no incentive to continue playing WvW. No matter how great your combat is or graphics are there is just no way you can be the best RvR on the market without it. STOP FOCUSING on what you think players should have or what players want. FOCUS ON what they NEED! An incentive won’t hurt like expanding what the WvW currency can get you and adding an increase in frequency on currency gain. Example: Add Proof of Heroics to wallet, add more in-game rewards to invest in, make ascended gear an option somehow, make it worth while to Scout/Havoc! Add a WvW track! Look into WVW RANKS and expand the rewards and things you can invest points in. Give us custom finishers. Give us exclusive gear at least skins similar to previous WvW seasons. DO SOMETHING TO HELP US NOT BANKRUPT US.

Skill balancing believe it or not just needs to be tweaked to compensate for the new Stability change other than that it really shouldn’t be a priority. What should be a priority is giving us better Weekly content like more armors less costumes, more accessory skins, and focus on better weapon designs which is completely irrelevant to the Over-haul.

Population balance? Don’t make me laugh its completely fine. You (Anet) just lack proper insight to many variables to can provide you much more revenue. PvP is great, but not amazing. I don’t see the amount of income you can be making compared to GvG. Pvpers will flock to this idea so will WvWers. GvG ladder is coming to a scene that is almost near death. Invest more into how WvW is played/viewed within other segments of the community or else these changes will mean nothing when you barely have dedicated open world combat specialists. Anet you must be losing on average thousands of players every month…. so… TIME IS MONEY!

long story short:
1. listen to the community – don’t ignore the GvG community
2. focus on the pvp part of wvw – pve is fine but to much is not good for the game mode
3. skill balance – yeah some stuff needs balance there
4. get some cookies – with cookies is everything better
5. read the thread

I don’t have much to discuss,if you want constructive feeback there are about 50+ threads in the WvW forum that you guys can read , related to every single point you plan to work on.

1. Stability & skill balance
2. Fix or revert DBL
3. Rewards
4. Population balance
5. Scoring

This list you wrote,FOR ME is also valid in terms of priority.

I would just change the point number 2 , and start immediatly reverting the DBL with old Alpine maps,then watch the statistics and carefully see if the big ammount of players and guild that already left GW2 slowly start returning , giving that way an implicit sign of right direction.

After that,if it is a succesfull move ,work on improving WvW maps with Alpine borders model in mind.

The point 1 and 2 together should give a decent boost themself on the paper.

A side note about WvW autoloot,as it is is not a big problem.
BUT , we are in 2016 and have to press the “loot interact” botton every step i take during the battles,while also using skills, looks a bit odd.
I disliked the fact that you introduced it as a mastery in first place.
It should have been a standard/base game improvement , and it should work in WvW as well.
