Let’s look at the future of World Events. What do you think future World Events should look like?

Here is what I want:

Let’s say the players (70+) are ordered to transport a very important ancient artifact to Lion’s Arch. Due to the artifact’s size they had to move slowly.

Suddenly, the players were ambushed from all directions. There is no chance of victory. The commander, Trahearne, orders the players to run to Lion’s Arch and ask for reinforcements. Trahearne and his NPCs will defend the artifact until the players gets back.

Fighting past waves upon waves of enemies, the players got to Lion’s Arch. And they returned with reinforcements.

The players found Trahearne trapped within a town. The players and reinforcements must break the siege, defeat the enemies in open field and recapture the artifact. This will require player’s skills, cooperation and tactics.

The Living World will change GREATLY depending on if the 70+ players can get back the artifact or not. History and the story will change forever because of it. So yes it is VERY important.

Do you want World Events like this? IMO, this would be the coolest World Event ever.

IMO, let’s forget about Scarlet’s minion invasion and Teq. Technical battles against organized enemies are the way to go for future World Events.

1 time events are bad no matter how you look at them (based on your text I assume you mean this to be a 1 time event). The 1 time karka event had (deserved) backlash because of that. (Heck even weekend long events over a holiday, dragon bash fire works and Father’s day, had backlash).

So what about the 50-90%+ of the population that can’t be on at that one specific time? What happens if 1 server wins the event and every other server doesn’t? What about overflows?

On top of that, after having to suffer through the new Teq. I never want to have another world event to be like that again. I don’t find it fun to require 80+ people on a voice service with lots of prep time just to do one event.

I just can’t see anything good coming of what you suggest.

Sorry let me clarify. These World Events are repeatable. But only the first event (on the first day) will affect the story.

Do you remember Chahbek Village from Istan in Elona? Foreigners can do that mission, knowing fully well that the story has already progressed past that point. The foreigners were living though a re-cap of the story.

That’s what I envision World Events to be. Players can join each other and re-do World Events at the later date. Then the players can talk about what “could have been” but didn’t happen.

But do keep in mind that only the success or failure of the players on the first day of the event will affect the story.

Let’s assume for a second that there are only 3 servers in GW2: TC, SOS and SBI. TC succeed on their World Event in the first day. SOS and SBI both failed theirs. Since it is 1 win vs 2 losses, the history will assume that all the players failed the World Event, and will move on from there.

Anet can also implement their own ideas. For example maybe by percentage of success. If out of 20 World Events (sum of all servers) on the first day, 13 of them were successes, then the history move on as if all the players succeed. etc

i can see a lot of complaining no matter whats happens if it ends up failing the servers that beat will complain they beat but other servers so they get penalized in a way. or if it succeeds some servers will complain they carryied other server who didnt succeed. if anet made it so only the server that succeeded moved forward then there would be complaints the world arent the same. people complain its a one day event and they went on vacation that week. still a problem with overflows and people saying hey my server might have won if i hadnt gotten into overflow all day long. i dont see how they could implement it without a lot of complaining. its one of the biggest reason they dont put in much permanent stuff for there ls almost puts them in screwed if you do screwed if you dont

I do agree that Anet need to fix the mega queue problems, specially on servers like TC. They got to look at guesting again during events like Teq. But the technological problems aside:

Yes we cannot please everyone. But that’s the point.

This is war. War isn’t fair. The enemies are really trying to win. They are actively planning our defeat. The possibility of defeat in a war is very real. And the effects of losing a war is very real.

This is real life. This is the Living World. This is the Living Story. History will be changed. The whole story is affected.

And it is only when so much is at stake, that players will work hard to improve their game playing skill. That commander would think and plan really hard before acting.

One day, players will go to the ruins of Ascalon Settlement. There they will find a entrance which says:

“Do you want to re-live the Battle for Ascalon Settlement, where the Centaurs defeated the Pact and razed Ascalon Settlement to the ground?”

And upon entering and winning that “re-live” battle with 70+ other players, that player will ponder about what could have been, what should have been, but didn’t happen. How the players could have won, but didn’t. How the guilds could have better cooperated, but didn’t.

And that player and his guild vowed to never let something like this happen again.

And that, my friends, is our living world. Our living story.

Ok I thought about it some more. I think these World Events should be spread out across a period of perhaps 1 or 2 weeks.

e.g.

Run to LA to get for reinforcements.
Day 1: Ambush at southern Sparkfly Fen.
Day 2: Escape from Sparkfly Fen.
Day 3: Fight though Bloodtide Coast to get to LA.

Go back to retrieve the artifact.
Day 4: Rally up the troops and fight our way to Sparkfly Fen.
Day 5: Destroy enemy supply camps in Sparkfly Fen.
Day 6: Destroy enemy siege weapons.
Day 7: Defeat the enemy army to force them to retreat.

So now you want to spread a 1 time event over several days (each day being a new 1 time event). You still don’t address any issues about how people hate 1 time events (if they can make it or not). They will get thrown into an overflow, not being able to play with their friends/guild mates. There will be massive skill lag. This type of play makes a lot of builds useless, etc.

You answer yourself right here:

Yes we cannot please everyone. But that’s the point.

The amount of people that would backlash against another 1 time, zergfest, laggy event would far outweigh people who want it (and so far you are the only one I’ve seen who wants it). Not to mention you’d want to add a permanent change to all servers based on what a % of players did. At least the election went to the time majority.

Also, I only speak for myself here, but I never want another “stupid” event that requires 80-120+ people (coordinated on teamspeak) to have a chance to beat it. Aside from 2-3 guilds dedicated to killing Teq (and maybe 1-2 servers daily) kill him, versus the millions that own this game. That is a horrible waste.

You guys already have enough dungeons and champion farming trains. Let those of us that enjoy World Events have our fun too will you?

Dungeons will not save GW2. People play these once and never do it again. Neither will champion farming trains save GW2. Farmers are from WoW and will move on to the next MMO. The only thing that can save GW2 are well made world events. And that’s why I am talking about it.

The way I see it, the life and death of GW2 hinges on the success or failure of World Events.

I spread out the events over 1 or 2 weeks preciously to cover the different timezones. Everyone should have a chance to complete at least one session of the World Event, and that’s enough to get the reward. A World Event is a collaborative effort by everyone across all time zones. No one person can do everything, but neither are you supposed to.

Sorry but saying you hate my idea ISN’T good enough. If you don’t like my ideas, you better post your own idea on what World Events should be.

Some problems that come up with this idea:

1. It takes each team 4 months to make their 2 content updates. This means that there would be a huge pause between this event and when we actually see the effects that come from it. This isn’t a huge problem since we can see them doing this with the Kiel election, but you do lose a sense of urgency and continuity.

2. Having it so only the 1st day of the event effects the story will cause many complaints (then again what doesn’t). People are already complaining about being forced to be on a 2 week cycle, if people feel like they MUST be there for the only part of the event that actually matters (the 1st day) Anet wont hear the end of it.

3. Then there are also balance issues and potential bugs. It’s hard to balance an event around a huge zerg, particularly when you need to take into account that it is their first time undertaking it (no one got close to killing Teq 2.0 on the 1st try).

I would like to see more living stories where we influence future content, however, it would need to be something like we have 2 potential elder dragons we can fight and we need to complete events/kill mobs of a certain type to decide which one we will face next.

In other words it is a good concept, but I think it needs to be refined a little so that we don’t know the direction the content will take until the very end of the story. It also couldn’t be used very often since there is a 4 month gap between the conclusion and the next part.

Sorry if you already addressed some of these issues I was to lazy to read past the 1st couple of posts.
