Hello, I would love to express my sincere opinion about Guild Wars 2 Living World after playing since beta.

I played 7 years of Guild Wars 1, and I’ve always been a very fan of its Lore. In my opinion the best fantasy game world ever. You had tons of secondary stories almost in every corner of Tyria, all of them strictly connected to the world and history, and some of them could easly drive into epic stories that they could change the all the world itself (1 example for all the “scepter of the mists”).

Anyway, since I’m a real appassionate about the Lore of Tyria I’m still wondering why all the amazing stories started in gw1 do not have any continuity in gw2.

I think the living story for what it is now is not telling anything about Tyria, anything related to dragons, or the gods, or any other stories or mysteries we have seen in gw1.
I find these releases kinda banal, and not relevant to tyria at all.
I’m wondering if the living story writers knows anything about the world of tyria to be honest.

The only release that is very interesting and has an immense power lore talking is Fractal of the Mists, becouse you can make everything happens inside there, the timeline is irrelevant, and you are in the mists, the realm of the gods.

I’m gonna remind you some (only the ones happened in Tyria Continent no Elona or Cantha since we don’t have those yet) of the interrupted amazing storylines you left behind:
- first of all the Gods, where the hell they’re gone?
- what happened when Kormir…..? (Spoiler Stop.)
- is abaddon really dead?
- the origins of the pale trees seeds (note the plural – there is a personal story that talks about that and many speculations going on about that, that’s VERY interesting!)
- the castle of Garenhoff?
- Kerrsh quest and the aspect of the Gods – i know u have put his diary in the library at priory but nothing more, and someone translated the inscriptions! (…on distant shores….) + connection between gods and dragons?
- OMG Livia! where’s Livia!!?!?
- The scepter of Orr!?!?
- the tunnel made by dredge that goes into Cantha Kurzick stone forest?
- where the Seer gone?
- omg one word – MURSAAT- !!!!
- the 4 bloodstones + the keystone?
- Lord Odran portals to the mists!?
- Underworld and Fow?
- the tombs of the iconic characters such as Mehnlo, Cynn, Aidan ect ect
- ect ect ect

They are too many to say them all, but u got an idea. You have stories to fill years of releases, and you’re just releasing nonsense stories that has nothing new to say to the world and they neither have any connection to the lore.
In gw1 a simple secondary quest could be so interesting and powerfull that can maybe change the world, whilst now a world release like molten facility or aetherblades is just killed in 1 week with nothing mysterius or intriguing about it and everything come back to normality like anything happened at all.

Another thing: most people new to GW says that this game don’t have a Lore at all, so once a week we have the “lore night” were i am the storyteller and i tell a story about something happened in the world of Tyria, to make them understand better the world itself and why some things are this way.

You left new players without any info about the story of GW. There are some amazing videos on youtube made by WoodenPotatoes that narrates the story of gw very well and imitating the stylish way of your videos, but the point is, was that difficult to make this youself inside the game without force someone else to do that in your place?

People needs to know how wonderful and intense the story of Tyria is, but you’re doing the exactly opposite, I can’t really understand why.

Forgive me for the very long post, I hope you will considerate what i’m saying, Thank you so much for your time!

A very affectionate player
Aedil

I love you, Aedil.

I played Guild Wars for ~7 years. I miss Guild Wars. What we got here….it ain’t Guild Wars; not by a long shot. With ‘Guild Wars 2’, there’s no sense of continuity or connection to it’s namesake. It makes me very sad.

I’ve been playing the series for for ~7 as well, since June 2006, and I fully agree with you Aedil. I do feel there’s continuity in the lore, but not even remotely close to enough to make it feel like a proper sequel, especially in the Living Story where the only continuity we get is the Zephyrites, and that continuity is hidden behind interviews and out-of-game-ness.

There was a lot of stories in GW1, some of which are hinted at or touched upon in GW2 but not delved into at all, and none of which people would really see without scouring the internet for short stories and interviews.

And I cannot agree any more than I am about the “Living World” story not telling much. Even if they say there’s story there, and we’ll see it… if we get nothing or next to nothing then our interest won’t be caught. I keep hearing “there’s a story we’re telling” but with it never showing its head… how am I to believe such?

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Thanks for the support Konig, and yes I totally lost interest in GW2, i’m actually playing and spending my money on another game, but sometimes i come back to check the stuff, and i get angry when nothing changes. I know a lot of people feel like this, I really loved GW1 and i stay in TS with my guildmates still altough i don’t play, so i can help them out, or talking about gw lore.
The lore settled in gw1 really created a believable living world, and no other MMO did it so well before, with so many places to go, so many things happened, it’s just, just amazing. And the Mysteries!
I really wanted so badly for gw2 to reveil those mysteries.

I’m still waiting for Gwen to visit Logan from the Mist and tell him how embarrass she is for having an incompetent, sissy descendant. Gwen have shown more courage and accomplished a lot of things and Logan is not worthy of the Thackeray’s name.

To be honest, I’m more interested on where my GW1 character’s tomb is. If Gwen’s tomb is preserved, my character’s should be also.

I completely agree with everything in this thread. GW1 had so many mysteries and stories to see through and GW2 just kind of dropped the ball on a lot of them. I mean it’s still really fun to run around the world and see what has happened to all the different landmarks and places I knew in GW1, but outside of landmarks and some scattered NPC chatter very little GW1 lore comes into play.

Hey random idea for a new living story arc, Livia returns as a Lich with the scepter of Orr in hand and is revealed to be the source of Tequatl’s new found power and leading an undead reusrgance. Imo a Risen Livia would make for a very intriguing villian as she could be a very tragic character like Kellach who still feels loyalty to Kryta but is compelled to destroy it due to Zhaitan’s corruption.

Livia is an important character from gw1, she has a deep background and we know her very well, at least we knew her! if the scepter of orr corrupted her (since is an orr artifact) and made her evil – a great evil – this would be very interesting!

I usually just read through forums, and rarely make and effort to log in just to post a reply, here I feel compelled heavily to do so.

I agree wholeheartedly with the OP, the majestic, tantalizing and absolutely awesome Lore is what Guild Wars 2 deserves, but lacks. It is actually what I miss most of anything else in the game, the only factor that casts a shadow on my gaming experience.

I do hope it will be improved over time, or at least some ideas from Beta would return (for example some foes were dropping a booklet f lore about them, which if they would return and be stored similarly as dungeon currency I would absolutely adore!).

Or similarly to Vistas there could be placed Lore points in different locations, telling tales of places in the world (Now THAT would be a scavenge run I’d sign in on!).

And of course plots, but as I said before, I agree fully and wholeheartedly with the OP!

The scepter is not inherently bad, it was the wielder of the scepter makes everything bad. So in the hands of Livia, I highly doubt that it she will be consumed by greed and wield the power for her own gain. From what we know of Livia, she’s not easily manipulated.

We know she’s fascinated with power. And you know what power does.

They totally foreshadowed a tragic story with Livia and the scepter in the final credits of EoTN.

I was kind of hoping for a dungeon with her as the boss. I bet something like that was planned too, but never followed up on.

That is what is really sad about this. It is clear that they had a lot of cool stuff planned, but it seems that the restructuring of the company, and the loss of many vets, has thrown everything in the air.

Now they seem to be floundering in trying to find their way.

I think the LS should focus on tying up loose lore ends in GW1, before starting anything new like Scarlet. There are so many things they can talk about. Joko, 6 gods, Mursaats, etc.

They don’t even need to finish everything at once. But please get it started. And then maybe mix it with new villains like Scarlet in between.

e.g.

Joko 1
6 gods 1
Scarlet (new villain) 1
Mursaats 1
6 gods 2
Scarlet (new villain) 2
Joko 2
6 gods 3
Mursaats 2
Eye of the North 1

Well, when we met her, her main goal is to end the war between the Shining Blades and White Mantle. How did she accomplished that after retrieving the scepter, we just don’t know. But since there are no remnants of what she did, this may be a great place to explore.

On another topic about my GW1 character’s grave, it should be in Ebonhawke because I would not have any reason not to go with Gwen when King Al summoned them back to Ascalon — I’m Ascalonian after all.

That is what is really sad about this. It is clear that they had a lot of cool stuff planned, but it seems that the restructuring of the company, and the loss of many vets, has thrown everything in the air.

New ideas are good, but unguided can be devastating. GW1 was once advertise to have made the game based on Magic: the Gathering. Looking at the Magic team and ArenaNet, and how the development team of Magic communicates with players, ArenaNet has a a lot more to learn.

Now they seem to be floundering in trying to find their way.

That is unfortunate.

Jeff Grubb still working for Anet or just left it as all the others?

He has been employed at NCsoft since 2007 as well as for Arenanet(2006). I am not sure if he is working on GW2 on a day to day basis now.

His bibliography says that he released a few books for other IPs since then: (Magic 2009), (Warcraft 2010) & (Starwars 2012). That probably explains why we don’t hear from him much and perhaps why a lot of the loose ends from those years never got tied up.

The Guild Wars story was not just by Jeff though, who only came in around Factions, but by a lot of people…many(most?) of whom no longer work there.

I realize that new people bring in new ideas which they would want to try out, but that doesn’t excuse leaving long time fans hanging with no resolution to heavily foreshadowed stories. Resolution that they have been waiting on for 6 years now.

It must be possible to go over the old notes and tie up those loose ends, no?

I’m seriously thinking of ditching GW2 to go and play GW1. I never played it but from what fellow guildies tell me, and from reading comments in here, it seems a great deal more in depth than what I seem to be playing now (some of my guildies have never stopped Gw1, though some have stopped playing GW2). GW2 is just zerging from one encounter to another – I can do that in a dozen other games tbh.

I understand someone want to bring new ideas, but since the game is GW2 and not another name, i think it should first close what has began in gw1.
After that feel free to bring new ideas.
GW2 is about dragons and their wake up, but looking at the world there is just no fear about them, or any anxious about it, it’s just like dragons don’t exists.
If u say the old lore team is no longer working there i believe you, is pretty clear looking at the state of lore now.

I agree with the OP. What was the point of Ree and Jeff creating all this detailed back story with so many obvious hooks, only to have this junk food content known as “Living Story” do nothing to advance the stories the game’s foundation sets up?

LS is just smoke and mirrors. Temporary content that disappears before some realize how vapid that content is and little actual story to give truth to the concept of “Living Story”.

It’s like watching an entire design studio just do “busy work” to justify a pay check, because they have just thrown up their hands and given up on actually building on the solid foundation the game provided at launch.

Can an entire studio be passive aggressive towards their employers and fans? Well, it’s looks like it can.

I do appreciate the hard work the Anet team puts in their job. I just cannot find any reason for choices they made about the lore, what’s the meaning of this. They can actually reach high goal, they are very good at what they do, but they are taking wrong choices in my opinion, and these choices are every day pushing people away from their product, either new players and old GW fans. What’s the point of this? I lost too many friends couse of this (not lost ofc they just don’t play gw2 but we kept in touch).

All of the above.

I can see no apperant reason tha the target for living story releases wasn’t answering or addressing some of the many hanging plot threads from the first game.

of course this is the same lore team that decided to retcon everything in to “Oh the Charr were there too, see how important they are?” and “Oh also this guy was a servant of Abaddon all along!”

Also don’t forget

“The new game should have dragons guys. It should totally be all about about dragons.”

“But Jeff… there’s not really much important about dra-”

“DRAGONS. MAKE IT ABOUT THEM. I HEARD FANTASY HAS DRAGONS ALL OVER IT!”

So we’d probably get something ridiculous like “Scarlet went back in time and gave the flame legion the searing crystals, convinced Kormir to open the first city, and also was the fortuneteller that corrupted Shiro”

I try not to think about the lore any more. It’s depressing at this point. Back when it was actually kind of off center and inventive I enjoyed it. I’ll write a better living story arc for free if that can start salvaging the ongoing decline in narrative quality.

If you got hired on for your new ideas and found out you’ll be doing nothing but going off of the old ideas, would you be satisfied with your job? Anywho the only way I think we can get it noticed is to make forum posts like this one. I believe a way to kill 2 birds with one stone would be to use the living world teams to do different things. There are 4 teams, so team 1 works on new ideas, team 2 works on recurring holidays and events, team 3 workson lore ccontent based off gw1, and team 4 improves the current world (like tequattle)

For me GW1 lore should interest people and it can be shown in GW2 by some NPCs that will reveal that or make it show while we uncover some new lore that bases on the old one…

Nope, GW2 will force us to drop all we knew about the world and write the story anew… Thats horrible concept. For new players and old ones.

Bumping for truth.

The GW1 lore was much more immersive than this. I totally understand this is a new game and there was a lot of technical complications that came first when the game was released, but now that you are adding lore based content, there was no reason to be releasing new story lines when there hasn’t been any continuation or done anything more than hint at the GW1 lore.

lvl80 Guardian lvl80 Ranger lvl80 Elementalist lvl80 Thief …. Why do I list these anymore?

Did u guys had a look at the name of ascended jewelry? Well, take a look and you’ll find some of the most precious or lore related objects of GW1.
Example: Ancient Mursaat Token, Armbrace of Truth, eye of jantir, Khilbron’s Phylactery, Golden Relic of Rin, Althea’s Ashes, ect ect ect.
Most of these items are related to a vast piece of GW1 you’ll never see and experience during your gw2 journey. That’s a pity couse the related lore is just AMAZING interesting.

Especially the term Ascended, that originally was not a grindfest to get some new items, but it was a sacred rite every gw1 player must pass throught to become closer to the Gods, see → http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ascension

Everything in gw1 had a deep lore explanation, nothing were ever added in the game without a clear lore motivation, this is why gw1 lore is so fantastic.

This is the post I’ve been looking for! Hi nice to meet you OP. Time after time again I’ve met many players in the game that just think this storyline is the greatest and the living story enhances it so much I will be blunt, I don’t know what crack they have been smoking, but it must be some good stuff. Guild Wars 1 lore was so in depth and so detailed and like you have said you can go off on a tangent and enjoy the little side quests that just make the game so much better. M.O.X. had an awesome little storyline for example. My only thought is that maybe, they took the guy who named all of the bosses in Guild Wars 1 and made him the lead writer for the main storyline, no offense to him, but this is just dull and boring, I get better entertainment out of watching paint dry because the Guild Wars 2 main storyline is absolute trash. I don’t want something original or unique because there is no need for that, you guys do not need to recreate the wheel, you have a great head start with the storyline from Guild Wars 1, BUILD OFF OF IT!!! I play MMO’s because they have some of the greatest storyline of any game I have ever played, I quit playing the storyline of GW2 because it not only lacks depth and ingenuity, but it in no way builds off of the GW1 storyline, and you have so many opportunities to make this a great story, why wait? I would recommend hiring those writers back from GW1 because they knew how to make a story that involved the player and made them care. That’s how I feel about the GW2 story, I really don’t care what happens because it is all about one NPC who I haven’t been given no reason to care about since the first quest you do. If you guys need some creative ideas for storyline with exceptional twists and turns check out:

~The Walking Dead
~Breaking Bad
~Game of Thrones

Thanks.

I agree, all of it, nice to meet you too Silent The Gray!

I really think they should hire the old gw1 again couse loosing them made the game…..“not good as expected”, to be polite.

Yep. So much awesome lore in the game that is not being used, such a shame. If the LS did do that it’d be great. One can only hope that they will since they introduced Caithe into the LS. The new characters like Brann, Rox and Hob-O-Tron can definately add something to the game, but I hope they go back to the kitten lore that is in the game.

Just a kitten shame.

Living Story is a great concept, but it should continue the story of the Dragons, not introduce new foes (there are already so many evil forces that we can deal with). Just a quick possible version:

Act 1) Destiny’s Edge wants to finish what they started (now that they’re happy together again) and go after that certain dragon they didn’t kill. Act 1 will deal with convincing everyone that dragon is the next one on the list.
Act 2) Focusses on the pact. Before the pact can move on there are several things that need taking care of. The Pact needs a new leader as Trahearne will stay in Orr (got kicked from his party for being a leecher). The three fractions in the pact each have their own objectives: clean out the risen (Vigil), find more info/artifacts (Priory) and find Zhaitan to check if he’s really dead (Whispers). Strechted out over multiple episodes featuring the different orders.
Act 3) Preparations for an excursion into the Crystal Desert. Convince Jennah to let Abonhawke be used as a staging ground. Collect supplies and escort them to Ebonhawke. More research in existing Branded areas.
Act 4) Introduction of the first map in the Crystal Desert. Finding a good place for an outpost and building it with materials that need to be brought there. Perhaps do something special with that, like needing the world to bring # amount of supply caravans before we get our waypoint there, some more escorts for defensive walls etc.
Act 5) Expansion into that area. Waypoints become available (just a few to keep the desert feeling like an empty place.
Act 6) Again focus on the different orders within the pact. Vigil goes cleaning out some more branded/new foes that are raiding supply caravans and are threatening the new outpost, Priory goes looking for ancient tombs/the body of Glint (we’ll be seeing some Zephyrites maybe?) and the Order of Whispers will be looking to contact their old buddy Palawa Joko to see how he’s surviving (more or less) the precence of Kralkatorrik.

And so on. A return visit to a partially healed Orr, a visit to the place Kralkatorrik was sleeping, seeking out the Hall of Monuments for answers to questions about the dragons (meanwhile setting up the story for defeating Jormag, to continue once we’re finished with Kralkatorrik, there is so much more that can be done within the existing lore. It’ll be years before we run out of content. Of course we can’t kill all the dragons, their needs to be some great evil left in the game, but it wouldn’t make sense not to go after Kralkatorrik and Jormag at least.

Story wise, I too feel Gw2 has kinda lost it’s way with the living story. Any mention of dragons, their champions and all the threads left dangling have seemingly been forgotten.

It’d be like star wars showing us the second death star being built, and then switching to our heroes playing with Ewoks for the entire rest of the film with scant regard for what’s going on around them. At least in RotJ we get back to the second death star and the empire. But here it’s like we’re playing with Ewoks..

On a narrative level the LS fails also, mainly because there is no ’Chekov’s gun’s’ laying around for us to link the stories.

Scarlett comes from nowhere. I would have thought a non asura who went to all the colleges would at least get a mention in the asura or sylvari PS even as an aside
Teq gets buffed due to Zhaitan, so how come the big Z didn’t make him super Teq in the first place?
Eir has a son? Since when? we share in her most intimate moments in game, help her get back together with her friends and zero mention of him. Just a soap opera style ’I’m Eir’s son’ moment in content long gone.

Remember the stories you wrote as a kid, where enemies, gadgets, friends and solutions came from left field?

Kinda reminds me of lost, how they clearly made it up as they went along and then had to retcon and shoe horn stuff in to try to make it fit.

That’s how the living story feels. A return of the Jedi with just Ewoks playing, more retcon than a bad comic series and the plot foreshadowing of a 10 year old’s story writing.

Sorry to be so harsh on it, but it’s just how it seems to me.
