I see quite a few posts about expansions on the 1st page. What exactly is the most important feature of an expansion for everyone?

more levels?
more zones?
more gear?
another race?
another class?
A larger story arc?
dungeons?
new features like raids/guild housing etc?

what’s the main reason behind an expansion that can’t be done through LS releases?

All of that things you listed there (Except raids , new race. They are not that necessary. And i don’t think they will expand level limit also)

New Spvp modes/maps , new weapons , new things to do , more jumping puzzles , more events , new objectives/goals or improvements for WvW , new legendaries , maybe new currency.

And imo , they can work on expansion while LS is still there Like i said in other topic , i don’t think A.net uses their all resources for LS.So why don’t we get an expansion like every 2 years and bi-weekly content like current LS system ?

Well I have a strong suspicion for a long time now, that they are working on something big behind the scenes. They say it themselves quite often really. Many of the big faces we used to see before launch – they are now “in hiding”. And Living story served as a school for newer and older devs alike. They are refining it with each release. I still think what LS gives us is almost expansion-worth but there is surely something in working what we don’t know about. Something big. And I’m hoping something awesome what will bring all those players who left back.

Mostly just a new class and new skills. Builds in this game are boring, there is pretty much only a few distinct ways to play each class. While there are other builds, they are largely not viable due to being borderline ineffective in combat.

And we need a new class because the lack of three Soldier professions leads to spamming of Warriors and Guardians, so much that if you look around in a city at least half of the players will be W/G instead of the other professions. This is because Heavies are easy to play, and that will never change because they are designed to be that way intentionally, so we need more Heavy diversity.

New zones are very nice, but we are already getting those (slowly).

I like maps. I like the other stuff too, but mostly I like maps. I don’t tend to play RPGs that don’t have exploration elements. I often ignore quests and story and explore the maps before I do anything else.

Just by the few that have replied the focus is on different things. It’s certainly a lot of work to release all that content. I still think Anet should consider it as it would be a big influx of cash. Obviously the expansion wouldn’t be free.

I think personally I would like a large new area to be released, with lots of quests, a new storyline (new npc’s), couple of new dungeons with gear to obtain, some world bosses to take down, more guild things to do… Basically I want to go back to when the game first came out and you have that sense of exploration and adventure again.

I every time I look at the world map and see areas that haven’t been revealed yet I want to know what’s there.

What I would want as an expansion is lore. I would like to know more about the drastic changes that happened to Elona and Cantha, how they managed to survive/evolve.

Of course I wouldn’t be against new classes (dervish!) and races, but more importantly I would like new skills to developped the classes we already have: I want more variations in builds.

Story is what I find most important in games, that’s why all I want is some adventure

ZONES!

As an explorer at heart, it kills me to see all those unexplorable zones in Tyria. A new continent isn’t even necessary (though it would be cool). The Deldrimor areas, Maguuma Wastes, Isles of Janthir, Blood Legion Homelands, the Desert… So much potential for exploration!

I honestly do not care about new classes or skills, or even dungeons.

And more connections to GW1 lore. How should I put it… a bigger focus on lore on larger timescales… As in, less low quality soap/sitcom stuff (biconics…) and more serious stuff, involving the 5 ancient races. And the human Gods.

New zones and a new story arc mostly. New armors/weapons/skills/dungeons would come along with that naturally.

I’d like to see (with a Canthan expansion as an example):

- New races (Tengu, Naga)
- Possible new profession
- New zones (Shing Jea, Canthan Mainland, Echovald Forest/Jade Sea)
- New campaign-sized storyline (Cantha tries to invade Tyria, is repulsed. We go over to Cantha to find a way to stop the invasion for good. We learn that the Emperor has tapped into the DSD’s power and become corrupted in the process.)
- Possible new weapons, or greater weapon options for existing professions
- New utility and elite skills
- New weapon and armor skins
- New dungeon(s) in the new zones

The main thing an expansion can do which a Living World release can’t . . . is deliver it all at once.

Anything else is semantics on what constitutes actual expansion content. I’ve seen expansions without new classes or races, expansions without new areas to explore, expansions without actually increasing content and only focusing on revising the game itself, and expansions which were little more than “we’re still alive, we promise”.

Absolutely. Which as a story and lore junky has been my biggest gripe about LS. GW1 kept me going because I enjoyed the rich lore that was interwoven into the storyline as well as even the side quests. GW2’s pacing of 20-30 minutes of story content every 2 weeks is killing me.

With GW2, I’ve really enjoyed Season 2 so far, but let’s face it, it is maybe 2 hours of new story content after 2 years. Season 1’s story part was by comparison so small and only set the stage for zerging events that I can’t even count it.

Totally agree, Having the areas there but unreachable is a tease.

I forgot about the Tengu, having them as a playable race would be great. We already have their capital city there.. its ready and waiting.

New skills would be refreshing. Perhaps a couple of new weapons introduced that every class could use. I did see something about a polearm that was datamined. Plenty of weapons that could be introduced. crossbow, polearm, battleaxe, Flail, Morning star, Sickle…

Finally some new features, guild housing, bar brawl, WvW stuff, etc.. not too concerned with sPvP but I think something needs to be done about it to improve that part to the game.

But the biggest thing as someone already said is that it’ll be a massive influx of content which wouldn’t be spoon fed to us like the LS. People can burn through it or explore at their leisure.

Lots of things, but basically, if thinking in a full expansion, sold at 20$ tag price for example, I’d like:

New zones, minimum 4 zones in size similar to the current ones. One of them a level 80 zone, other a starting area.

New race starting in that starting area, plus a city for that race (so, 5 zones if we count the new city).

A new personal history for that race.

A new General history, in Journal mode, similar to current LS, maybe at some point the new personal history and that new journal meet, in a similar way the missions in GW1’s Factions, etc

New armours, skins, weapons…. for all races

New enemies on that zones

New enemies from that zones “invading” current zones, maybe creating some events/hearts, or altering existing ones.

Features like “build your team”, a whole set of characters, including biconics, existing characters and new characters that are your allies appear as modificable, so you can alter their skins, some changes in looks, etc.. maybe some predefined sets of skills/weapons to able some change in playstile. Not as configurable as heroes in GW1, but something that allows to customize them in their apparitions in the Journal-related missions.

New skills may be nice, but probably a difficult thing to balance, and the level of almost-identical abilities that we had in GW1 was too much. But maybe 2-3 new abilities for every profession is safe, not all of them high-level abilities.

New dungeons in the new areas, for example 2.

For expansions, mmmh. I can see all this:

  • New dungeon
  • New skills (+ skills submarine for fight)
  • New craft
  • News card
  • News Puzzles
  • News Armors, racial Armors, Weapons
  • All weapons for all classes
  • A new Racial personal story (continued)
  • Improved cities (beautiful gardens, completions)
  • Guild Hall, Housing
  • Hidden Treasure
  • Events
  • Added weather, dark nights + Events related to those above.
  • Dragons

Ps: Excuse me.
For armor, I think you have to adapt a bit more to the bearing races. I do not like the armor base on Charr and Asura. It’s two races are ridiculous with normal armor.

# Asura because I’m worth it!

More full on zones like the ones we have already (including dry top but NOT southsun)

and yeah thats pretty much all i want, to be able to revisit the crystal desert and the ring of fire, get the opportunity to travel up to the isle of janthir, see the homelands of the other 2 charr legions. Cantha and Elona would obviously be awesome to see as well.

Most wanted in game additions: Beastiary, readable books

An expansion worthy of pay is what I want:
New continent Elona or Cantha, new and separate story/campaign, new classes, new skills, new weapons. We do not need more playable races, GW only had 1 and did just fine. We don’t need more levels, 80 is enough.

LS is a great way to expand on the continent of Tyria. A boxed expansion should be like a complete game. They could do great things with Elona and Palawa Joko.

Let’s see…

  • Since it’s always been a mystery to Guild Wars players, let’s make the expansion in whatever setting was planned for Guild Wars: Utopia.
  • At least 8 new level 80 zones, with story missions that tells that new world’s story, similar to how GW1 missions and GW2 LS instances work.
  • A new race. (Tengu maybe?) Starts in the new low-level zone. In addition, a 4th origin story for each vanilla race, starting in that same new low-level zone.
  • New weapon style: Bare-hands (fist combat for warriors, shoot stuff out of your hands for casters, etc.) You can equip knuckles so you have an item to put runes and stats on.
  • At least 60 new armor sets, (20 for each type of profession) all ascended, and those should all be prestige armor sets that rewards various accomplishments in the game: PvP, solo PvE, group PvE, and even more exotic stuff such as an armor set for jumping puzzle masters.
  • Slotable weapon skills. Say a warrior has a set of 8 greatsword skills, from which he chooses 5 to put on his skill bar.
  • A lot more utility and elite skills.
  • Heroes. Similar to the first Guild Wars, but only in instanced content. (Because it would be annoying in the open world.)
  • New dungeons, same design with the story and explore modes, but with completely revamped party mechanics that makes support and defense roles something more than training wheels for noobs so that 5x berserker is not always the optimal party setup.

Leaving out PvP because I don’t do any PvP or WvW so I don’t know what those would need. Also, since the topic says “expansion” I assume an actual expansion (like EotN) and not a campaign (like Factions).

Hmmm expansion…. hmmmm…

More levels? Absolutely not.
More skills? Yes please.
More zones? Oh yes, absolutely!
Another class? Please no.
Another race? That might be fun, sure.
More gear? Skins only. No more stats. No more power creep!
A full story arc to throttle a dragon? Absolutely!
Heroes? Please!
More dungeons? Maybe, sort of meh

Uh…. Cantha!

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Let’s see…

  • Since it’s always been a mystery to Guild Wars players, let’s make the expansion in whatever setting was planned for Guild Wars: Utopia.

That’s never going to happen. Everything that was unique about utopia and the people would have lived there was repurposed and turned in to the asura and parts of the design of orr when Anet decided to make GW2 (and decided GW2 needed to invent a bunch of playable nonhuman races simply because every other game does it) The magitech, mayan influences, golems, architecture, etc. etc have already been used. The Tanneks were changed in to Primordius and the destroyers. Other bits of the architecture were repurposed for the art style of Orr.

There’s literally not enough left clinging to the bones of utopia to resurrect it, and there’s no reason to. All you’d have left would be the idea of time travel and chronomancy, and some mounts, all things which I’d rather not get in to as Tyria’s lore has been abused and mishandled enough in the transition from the first game to this one, and mounts are just plain fanservice in GW2’s design without any real gameplay reason to exist. I can only imagine how much more nonsensical things would get by throwing an entire time travel continent in to the game.

Wall-O-Text inbound:

PvE

- Aggro system with actual roles players can perform in PvE content that isn’t “Stack or git kicked”. I want to feel like boss fights are STRATEGICAL events that have actual mechanics, that will actually punish players for not doing them.

- Make Toughness actually HELP players shave off damage in PvE, as opposed to just being the first one to die in the group, but hold his own for 0.2 second faster.

I am sick and tired of “Full Zerker gear check, or kick”. It is completely idiotic, and the dungeons NEED to be designed to put the hammer on full zerker idiots.

- Make the normal dungeons as hard as Fractal level 10. Dungeons are a kittenwalk to complete. Make players earn their tokens/daily gold, but do it with actually entertaining encounters. Again, a lot of the Fractals are perfect examples on how NORMAL dungeons should operate.

WvWvW

Change the overall structure of WvW. I know, scary. I just feel WvW isn’t turning out to be the server based war game Anet wanted it to be. Instead of players defending their turf and spending points to upgrade, instead the game turns into a perpetual game of ring around the rosie. Just run in circles, cap locations, and move on to the next, all while the other two servers do the same.

Give players insentive to push/capture server Keeps by making them near defensless without supporting Towers to aid them. By making Keeps naturally easy to capture without Towers, you give more value to Towers, making them WORTHWHILE things to defend. This creates a domino effect, where now Camps are WORTHWHILE things to defend, since they are the only way Towers are going to get the resources needed to upgrade them.

Also, PLEASE get rid of gold costs for seige weapon blueprints. in exchange for a different WvW currency. Make it so players can only recieve this currency for successfully defending points, helping transport resources, getting rid of infestation, fighting a WvW world boss, ect (pretty much all of those WvW events that NO ONE DOES). Again, this gives these events actual value, and are important to the core game.

New stuff

- New race
- New classes (2 would be a good number)
- New list of traits for ALL tiers
- New weapon types (spears for land fighting, perhaps? Or just call them Halberds if you NEED to keep them separate)
- New, changeable weapon skills for pre-existing weapons
- New skills/abilities for every class
- New trait tree for every class (wishful thinking on my part)
- New map locations
- New dungeons with weapon/armor skins for them
