Its really sad. Ele is still the most fun class for me to play as, but it’s completely useless outside of spvp, which I hate and never bother with anyway. Cant you guys revert all the nerfs for PvE only? Even people who I’ve been running dungeons with regularly since the start of the game, who know that I know what i’m doing have been asking me to just use my guardian instead. Guardian can do everything ele can do except way better, and do a ton more damage and have better survivability as well. The only time I ever really feel useful is in AC when someone needs an ice bow to kill graveling burrows.

After The patch that nerfed RTL and Mist form I knew we’d just keep getting screwed further and further till we couldn’t do anything and they would never give us an significant buffs because we can supposedly do everything. Seriously Anet, just reverse all the changes since beta that have screwed up the class an we’ll still be not as good as all the other classes. But atleast we won’t be totally useless like we are now. I tried to give them the benefit of doubt with this patch and wasted lots of gold trying out different builds. There’s a few fun new ones, but nothing really useful. We’re still horribly mediocre. Theyre afraid of buffing us and making us too strong. Yet look at how stupidly OP thief is. yet they’ve done nothing to address how overpowered stealth is. We used to be able to do mediocre damage then disengage and heal up and come back to do more meaningless amounts of damage. At the very least me could make a nuisance of ourselves before, but we cant even do that anymore as healing, mobility, and condition removal has been nerfed into oblivion. Yet thief can indefinitely reset a fight, heal up and cure all their conditions (they had better condition removal than we did even before we got nerfed), come back and burst down their opponent with insane dps. And they can keep trying over and over again till they get what they want. How is that ok yet we aren’t even allowed to run away and be a minor nuisance? Its not like we were even a threat before. Now we cant even get away from Guardians if we try to run. We can maybe get away from Necros if they don’t destroy us with conditions first.

thank you Izzy for the video, definitely helpful for some of my friends who never played an Ele and are interested in doing so. People QQ over eles but seing how loved we are in WvW I have no fear. I love my Ele, even if he might not do the most damage we do pretty good damage. I’m starting to hate the min-maxers these days, this thread is the perfect showcase of why I do.

I don’t min-max stuff anymore either but even with min-max anything we’re always sub-par. Then when we hear that they might nerf our mobility again çourse we’ll QQ.
Would be nice if they stopped spreading on coming nerf stuff about the elementalist for a while. That way the forums wouldn’t be full of the QQ because that’s what’s causing it.

Pretty much this. Standard S/D wasn’t touched last patch, staff got buffed, new traits for pve land and pvp. LF is still a really good skill, same with cf. People have been saying ele’s suck even when we had 20’s rtl, blasts on all ea’s, strong healing scaling. You look at every class forum and all you see is people blaming anet and the class for there failures. Ele has some issues no doubt but its not a bad class.

I’ll be trying S/D as a last resort, so I won’t comment. (So much for build diversity, huh? Are we down to one viable build now? How long do you think that will last before it’s nerfed)?

Staff buffs in no way compensate for the utility nerfs. One step forward, five steps back.

Eles were sub-par before the string of nerfs. Sub-par would now be a very generous evaluation.

I think this patch proves that the current people working on this profession, (and apparently we aren’t the only profession in the same boat), just are not talented enough to properly balance the profession and the game.

Ele vs Ele duels are not a good way to gauge the effectiveness of a class. Duels aren’t really a good place to start anyway tbh. 15 air 25 water will get you more damage than going 20 air 20 water % damage traits are always better unless you take something like air training which is more conditional than bountiful power.

I must say that utility skills have been freed up which seemed to me attleast to be the main goal in the last patch. I now actually feel compelled to bring other skills. Cantrips are still good but they don’t completely over shadow every single other skill we had.

I must say, I thought this was a complete and utter joke from Anet. Is it April 1st or something?

Talk about complete and total disconnect from Anet. Its cool and all that you know how abilities work with each other since you designed them, but you are quite disconnected about how they actually play in game and against other players.

Completely thoughtless changes mixed in with a few minor improvements from this patch. The past several patches combined have actually diminished the overall viability of the class as well as its versatility.

Oh… and if you really nerf FGS because of the mobility it provides then you are just proving exactly how out of touch you are. The reason WHY players are using it is because you took away everything else and it is needed. Oh …and signet of air is still worthless and a waste to run because it takes the space of something that is required for the lowest health/armor class in the game for base survivability, even more so since you took away the mobility.

Speaking of high dps, high mobility, and best defense in the game with stealth…. little hypocrisy from you there don’t you think given your comment about eles.

Lightning Flash is not weaker than what it was before. Have you even tested it? The instant cast + teleport still allow you to prevent bursts, which means the removal of a stun breaker hasn’t changed it much, and the lower cooldown and the higher damage makes it even better for offensive use.

Fresh Air adds up to 3-4k to your burst, and it IS usually used with vital striking (and bolt to the heart and air training). Besides, this build (with or without fresh air) allows you to keep dealing damage even if you use lightning flash but remain disabled.

Signet of Air opens up new possibilities, Arcane Shield is an excellent alternative to mist form for burst builds, especially because it is affected by the traits that would affect arcane wave and arcane blast, goep has gotten a flat buff in casting time (even though being a stun breaker is weird), focus has gotten a clear buff (even if it’s not enough yet), staff has gotten an even clearer buff, and so did several traits. Cleasing fire has gotten a trade-off, losing the stun breaker but becoming a stronger condition removal skill.

The only real nerf done to the elementalists, was to defensive bunker eles, who could deal a lot of damage with bountiful power and had way too many stun breaks. Bunker eles should still be viable after this patch, valkyrie s/d burst eles should still be viable (if not made stronger) after this patch, fresh air builds are starting to pop up, staff builds are far more effective now, triple arcane utility is now a viable setup, and even though the following builds might still not be strong enough, condition builds, signet builds and glyph builds were all buffed.

Saying that the profession has been weakened after this patch is just being dramatic. In all profession forums, there’s always a portion of the community that feels that their own profession is terrible and all other 7 professions are at a much better state.

We have several issues, but this patch was a step forward in fixing those issues, not a step backwards.

Have fun learning about the totally new thing called “combo fields”, that you can kite 10-15 people with a staff and how they “trimmed down mobility a little bit here and there”. WvW isn’t any fun after this. It’s almost like playing god mode with all this great insights. Only 10 minutes ago i singlehandedly busted a zerg before they were even within meele range.

It’s clearly not. We can go close to glass from range, or bunker in melee. These are still the only two competitively viable options. Cleansing fire is still trash as condition removal. Lightning flash is not stronger. It paid for the cooldown and damage with the stunbreak, which teleporting away is absolutely nowhere near the same as. GoEP buff was for all intents and purposes only a cast time buff, costing us a truly useful stunbreak. Overall, the only real improvements were to Arcane skills and burst scepter users. Focus is now riddled with bugs, D/D still doesn’t have a stat independent active defense mechanism, and staff got quality of life buffs as a back line support weapon

  • Why do we all need to put 20+ points in arcane and 15+ point in water just to meet our minimal expectations of how the class should perform?
  • What is the design justification behind making 19/20 skills on staff AOE? playing Ele is an exercise in annoyance because of the frequency i need to switch between weapon sets because they’re all so niche.
  • Why are conjures so badly designed and clunky to use?

I’m sorry, but you can’t say it’s ok for virtually every other class with escapes to use them intelligently instead of sitting there & dying. Many classes can escape when the only people chasing you are newbies who have never heard of gap closers & CC. I don’t think it’s really fair to high level play to balance around that.

Ele is primarily a roamer (despite losing a lot of mobility) and 1v1 effectiveness is very important.

Mirror matches make it a test of skill instead of class balance. When you go from 50/50 to winning 100% of your fights against someone after they change spec, there’s a clear indication that their spec is weaker.

If your strongest build gets nerfed and nothing becomes better than it, your class just got weaker. You can list a bunch of trivial changes to noncompetitive skills, traits and builds, but at the end of the day you’re sprinkling sugar on a 0 calorie cookie.

Lightning flash was nerfed and the compensation is a joke. Stun breakers are the most important part of a utility skill, and doubly so for an ele that dies the second it stops moving. Removing it for a tiny cooldown reduction and a few hundred damage per minute is a kittening joke. teleporting away so you can lay flat on your face and have a thief shadowstep ontop of you instantly to continue his assault is not helpful. It was an apocalyptically stupid change.

The cooldown reduction on cleansing fire is a joke. If you can’t see that, I can’t take you seriously.

The only time that fresh air is adding “3-4k burst” is against other glass cannons. I was getting hit for 1-2k and switching to water attunement or dodging in water erased that. And unless you sit there and channel the pitiful DPS of arc lightning (I’m going to borrow a term from Day9 and call it the tickle ray), you’re still going to have to land abilities to crit and proc fresh air. Once they fix the ICD bug, you’re basically adding a few hundred DPS averaged out over the fight from a GM trait, and any time you don’t switch to air when it’s up, that goes down.

Signet of air is still bad. Arcane shield is ok, but you certainly can’t replace mist form with it in a competitive WvW/tPvP environment. Mist is your only safe stomp/res.

Saying that the profession hasn’t been weakened after this patch (especially with most other professions getting strong) is a clear sign of stockholm syndrome.

In the particular match you mentioned, you were using different amulets as well as traits. Making the assessment that the flaw in the build was the traits could be an error. Not saying it is, for sure, but your data is inconclusive at best.

PvP is a different animal from WvW. What works well in one is often useless in the other. Both of the new GM air traits, and the former GM Earth trait being moved to master, have given me some options for hybrid/burst builds which seem effective so far, but would be pretty bad in tPvP due to lack of sustain and the low cap on crit damage.

My limited experience in sPvP leads me to believe the choice of amulet and jewel make a huge difference in survivability.

I’m probably a mediocre player at best though, so there’s that as well. ;p

Besides the lack of understanding of the game displayed (someone apparently hasn’t noticed that every class can specialize and still have access to a range of options more effectively and there are also better Jack-of-all-trades classes) the biggest thing that bothered me about that whole thing was the cash-shop food buff he mentioned. That is exactly the sort of crap I came to this game to avoid, and it may be the last straw for me, but that’s beside the point and this is now an epic run on sentence so there.

Hats off to all the ones who stood before me, and taught a fool to ride.

Just watched the video. When talking about D/D setup he says “there’s a nice mix of mobility, direct damage and conditions here” – the mix of conditions and direct damage is actually bad because you can’t specialize your damage. Also “nice mobility”? LOL before all the RTL nerfs yes, but now it’s nowhere near “nice”.

And the best part: “There’s lots of different D/D damage builds, especially for pvp”. D/D doesn’t even have a SINGLE viable damage build. This video was simply insulting to the ele community, and a prime display that showed that arenanet DOESN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE CLASS AT ALL.

Oddly enough after this patch Necro is the new jack of all trades class. Was testing some stuff out with it, and holy crap its so much better at EVERYTHING than Ele is. It can support the group with healing them, debuff enemies, CC enemies, do huge DPS, it can tank. It can basically do everything the supposed jack of all trades class can do, but do it a crapload better. If you don’t fix Ele then can I atleast request putting in a way to unsoulbind ascended gear so I can just give everything to the Necro and just delete my ele? I love my ele and have played it since the first beta weekend, but with every single patch you keep systematically destroying everything that I found enjoyable about it.

People still think that the elementalist was nerfed last patch? If you consider that a nerf, then nothing is ever going to make you happy.

Bountiful power and Lightning flash both took big hits. Considering that the majority of eles used those skills, yes eles got nerfed. A mediocre trait 30 points up a terrible tree isn’t going to make me invest in fire. So far I’m not impressed with fresh air. The 10% damage I got from vital striking gave me a comparable damage increase and I still had healing ripple. I won 10/10 duels using 0 20 0 20 30 valk against a friend runing 0 30 0 10 30 zerker. We’re about even when both using the same build. He didn’t have the burst to kill me quickly and couldn’t keep up in a sustain fight.

Ele is weaker now than it was a week ago.

Lightning Flash is not weaker than what it was before. Have you even tested it? The instant cast + teleport still allow you to prevent bursts, which means the removal of a stun breaker hasn’t changed it much, and the lower cooldown and the higher damage makes it even better for offensive use.

Fresh Air adds up to 3-4k to your burst, and it IS usually used with vital striking (and bolt to the heart and air training). Besides, this build (with or without fresh air) allows you to keep dealing damage even if you use lightning flash but remain disabled.

Signet of Air opens up new possibilities, Arcane Shield is an excellent alternative to mist form for burst builds, especially because it is affected by the traits that would affect arcane wave and arcane blast, goep has gotten a flat buff in casting time (even though being a stun breaker is weird), focus has gotten a clear buff (even if it’s not enough yet), staff has gotten an even clearer buff, and so did several traits. Cleasing fire has gotten a trade-off, losing the stun breaker but becoming a stronger condition removal skill.

The only real nerf done to the elementalists, was to defensive bunker eles, who could deal a lot of damage with bountiful power and had way too many stun breaks. Bunker eles should still be viable after this patch, valkyrie s/d burst eles should still be viable (if not made stronger) after this patch, fresh air builds are starting to pop up, staff builds are far more effective now, triple arcane utility is now a viable setup, and even though the following builds might still not be strong enough, condition builds, signet builds and glyph builds were all buffed.

Saying that the profession has been weakened after this patch is just being dramatic. In all profession forums, there’s always a portion of the community that feels that their own profession is terrible and all other 7 professions are at a much better state.

We have several issues, but this patch was a step forward in fixing those issues, not a step backwards.

I stopped reading after the first paragraph. Have you played WvW or PvP with the nerfed Lightning Flash? I didn’t think the removal of the stun break would make too much difference, but I was so completely wrong.

There also seems to be an undocumented change to mist form. There seems to be a pause between activation and the invulnerability kicking in. Skilled opponents are hitting me with stuns or immobilize the moment I enter Mist and I’m not going any where.

ANet also added a 1 second delay between being downed and the downed skills becoming available, which has made escape via vapor form a lot more difficult.

I never felt powerful in WvW as a staff ele. I enjoyed the small amount of utility I can bring to a group or zerg, we can be a minor force multiplier and we come in handy hitting things up on walls. Roaming, I didn’t win too many 1v1 engagements, but at least I could enter a fight to guage an opponent and if things went sour and I played skillfully I had a chance to disengage.

I wasn’t powerful before the patch, but I could still have fun. ANet seems to have targeted this patch at excising that ability from the profession in a very precise fashion.

IMO, the studio has gone from an A pre-launch to a D+ post launch. Adding inability to properly tune and balance professions to the growing list of areas for concern just verifies the downward trajectory. It’s hard to comprehend how the studio that made this awesome game could be the same studio running it.

At least it`s not as bad kitten it used to be on spell 3 cast, but it`s just another case of “Ele` can escape in one extremely small portion of WvWs & nowhere else, let`s fix that asap”

All those crying that we could get through a door have won, just as they did with RTL, our heals, our defenses etc…

But hey, they can`t nerf us much more, can they?……

I don’t really understand your logic behind.

IMHO the recent patch was a step in the right direction for the class BUT if anet think it did anything to reduce our reliance on water and arcane they are fooling themselves.

We are tethered to water because we are a light armor wearing class with poor base health, until they increase the base health that will remain an issue.

The odd thing I had never seen anyone complain about vapor form until a few days before the patch hit. I’m convinced that some out of left field complaint posts that slightly predate specific nerfs are someone in development trying to create cover for a nerf that no one wants or has asked for.

I’m fine with the current changes to eles. Lightning flash nerf doesn’t change anything – who actually used it as a stun breaker?? I always used cleansing fire and mist form first and rarely do I need to pop all three cantrips in a short time frame. Lightning flash was always mainly used as a positioning tool and that hasn’t changed. I now used armor of earth to replace cleansing fire. Nothing has changed.

Bountiful Power, well yea that’s 5% less damage you’ll be doing but again, not a major nerf if you know how to use your skills right to maximize damage.

I didn’t like the RTL nerf but it’s not a big deal to me. However, if they kitten all over fiery greatsword, I’ll be kitten ed.

13:31 – use FGS, skill #3 and #4 have mobility, looking into for balance, “get out of jail” skills
14:05 – burning retreat for escape
14:21 – “a lot of your defence comes from your mobility on your staff”
Question: balance changes to mobility – “we don’t want the like to be the best mobile character in the game”, ele can change roles during combat so mobility is a trade-off

Doesn’t this contradict it self?

I complained about it, and there were a few threads around release that had the same complaints across most classes. Basically if you press 2 as you go down you waist your 2 downed skill.

lol The jealousy is strong in this thread. Its only 600 distance plus roll so its way shorter and the super jump (about double distance) needs two skills and is on a 40 sec cd.

But I still feel for you eles, someday you will have more viable builds….someday.

Would say like Rabid Gear + Divnity Runes and all celestial accessories setup be even viable or is it spreading yourself to thin? It seems to be what he is saying the ele is made for? After The patch that nerfed RTL and Mist form I knew we’d just keep getting screwed further and further till we couldn’t do anything and they would never give us an significant buffs because we can supposedly do everything. Seriously Anet, just reverse all the changes since beta that have screwed up the class an we’ll still be not as good as all the other classes. But atleast we won’t be totally useless like we are now. I tried to give them the benefit of doubt with this patch and wasted lots of gold trying out different builds. There’s a few fun new ones, but nothing really useful. We’re still horribly mediocre. Theyre afraid of buffing us and making us too strong. Yet look at how stupidly OP thief is. yet they’ve done nothing to address how overpowered stealth is. We used to be able to do mediocre damage then disengage and heal up and come back to do more meaningless amounts of damage. At the very least me could make a nuisance of ourselves before, but we cant even do that anymore as healing, mobility, and condition removal has been nerfed into oblivion. Yet thief can indefinitely reset a fight, heal up and cure all their conditions (they had better condition removal than we did even before we got nerfed), come back and burst down their opponent with insane dps. And they can keep trying over and over again till they get what they want. How is that ok yet we aren’t even allowed to run away and be a minor nuisance? Its not like we were even a threat before. Now we cant even get away from Guardians if we try to run. We can maybe get away from Necros if they don’t destroy us with conditions first.

My good sir, I believe you have covered almost all of our problems regarding the class aside from pitiful trait lines and long attunement recharge time and longer cooldown time on mediocre skills. For this we thank you.

Anet, hire this guy asap! your own balance team is in need of some…balancing.

Seems you should think twice before Killing a thief or you risk having tyour profession removed from the game.

I still wonder how he can t understand whakittens doing to the class removing mobility from ele (LOCKED in a single range).

Its worse than removing stealth from thieves COMPLETELY without a redesign saying they are fine.

I think some reputation from his “balancing” since gw1 is quite deserved.

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
