Improving “the Dragon tooth”

Yup, and should be as suggested for a long time now….
I’d be happy if the cast-time was brought down to ~0.25s, with the same delay. As it is, you are punished heavily for casting it in all situations when the target isn’t downed/out of LOS by paying a 1s cast (which is OFTEN interrupted) just for a zoning tool. At least with a short cast-time, you can throw it out there to zone your opponent and MAYBE force him to eat it. At 1s, you rarely have time to cast it for even THAT purpose.
WIth the new Ele changes you wont be using dragons tooth in wvw
I was surprised that this skill still has not changed when I came back from my long break.
+1
this skill deserves ground targeting

This post is for those smarts elementalist that want to improve the gameplay of class by proposing a real solution.
Yeah, it should be a ground targeted skill. It should also have lower cast time and delay. And it should be on a weapon that doesn’t have so many bad skills, so they should rework the whole scepter.
But I don’t think we’re getting these changes. The buff to Shatterstone was a complete joke and they don’t seem to even know what to do to improve scepter.

Please be serious with your answer because this post is for a realistic solution. If we applied your solution the “Dragon Tooth” will be to strong. Actually the skill is good, it does lot damage and cause burning but it cost a long time cast and a heavy animation. So the skill is balance. The problem is that this skill can’t be used in all situations (as for example the “Ice spike” in staff).

Hardly, with that delay and casting time anyone will at least two years reaction speed will walk out of it. It’s only useful for cleave on downed if they’re not stealthed.

Yeah could be hard. But even with the time cast and time delay you could use the “Dragon tooth” ground targeted as a defensive skill by casting the spell on your position. And you can even cast it in a location far away and go under your “Dragon tooth” to protect yourself against an enemy. And you can use on a “Shadow refuge” of a thief to make him move or dodge. And remember that you can cast your “Dragon tooth while moving. So you can dps in a specific location (like point in PvP mode) when you are kiting an enemy.

I was very serious with my suggestion – to reduce the cast time to 0.25s, but keep the long animation delay as-is (1.5-2s or w/e). The long animation delay is penalty enough, while the cast time carries such a high opportunity cost its mostly never worth casting. If they reduced the cast time the skill can at least be used as a zoning tool, seeing as the delay on the animation is still long enough for people to walk out of.
That being said, ground targeted would be nice too. I just know they are very adamant about avoiding more ground targeting b/c its too hard for players or something.

If I remember correctly, dragon tooth was originally ground targeted in the betas but was changed later on. It’s a shame really, ground targeting makes the skill so much better imo.
I think Anet would not change this skill at all in HoT because they’re kind of introducing this “directional skill emphasis” on the new profession: Revanant, which in fact this type of skill had been there since launch. Since they’re pushing it right now, it’s not likely that they’d change a directional skill to a ground target skill.
You can noscope the dragon tooth with camera tricks.

Yes but is actually really hard because you have to turn you camera at maximum up to your caracter and do the “Dragon tooth” at the same time. And even if you noscope your “Dragon tooth” sometimes it doesnt work.

I have not played to the GW2 beta but i am trying to found some video on yout tube to see how the “Dragon tooth” was in the beta… Maybe you can give me more details.

Maybe but I think they could change this skill if we demand something feasible and we all insist on it.

3 years of such requests have led most vets to give up. They honestly have no idea what they are doing with this class.
Also, the profession forums are for dialogue with other other players or to vent. Trust us, your voice isn’t actually being heard.
We can rename it, The Dragon’s Jaw and make it a line of Dragon’s Teeth.

I use Dragon’s Tooth to take out annoying siege in WvW. Ground targeting would make that impossible. Though I understand why players would want it to be ground targeted.
I think the more pressing issue at the moment is how easy it is to cancel the attack just by attacking. Seriously, try it out: Cast Dragon’s Tooth, then mash the 1 skill. The giant tooth in the air just disappears. There’s no reason for that to happen.
In my opinion, dragon’s tooth needs to either hit harder or be ground-targeted. As it is, the absolute only way that you can land a dragon’s tooth on anyone in PvP is if you precede it with a gale or updraft and immediately swap to fire and cast it. You’re using an extremely long cooldown skill (50s or 40s, respectively), putting air attunement on cooldown, and the only way that your dragon’s tooth is going to hit your target is if your target doesn’t have a stun break available. There’s so much that goes into actually landing it that you would expect it to deal a ton of damage, but it just doesn’t.
For instance, I was playing a game of PvP today and landed a gale + dragon’s tooth combo on a thief (which is uncommon because thieves usually always run stunbreaks with considerably shorter cooldowns than gale), and I landed a whopping 2,000 damage. That’s obviously a case where dragon’s tooth didn’t crit, but if I’m specc’ed for full damage using a berserker’s amulet and sacrifice a huge cooldown skill just to land dragon’s tooth, I shouldn’t have to get lucky and have a high crit in order for it to do any damage. Contrast that with the fact that the same thief can then stealth up and cast a backstab for over 10,000 damage with a decent crit, all while burning zero cooldowns, and you see why it’s crazy that dragon’s tooth is so weak.
If ANet were to make dragon’s tooth ground targeted, they should probably shave the cast time by a quarter second at the very least. Going that route would mean they want to make it easier to land, and even with a ground-targeted dragon’s tooth, it’d still take absolutely visionary timing and positioning in order to land it with the current cast time that it has.
