What about Dervish?
I never played GW1, but from what I can tell they seem to be melee mages that used scythes.

So imagine a melee mage that loses the ability to use a Scepter, but gains the ability to use a sword. You still attune to the elements, but your abilities are all based in melee range.

They can make staff the main weapon for the class and just do what they did with Necromancers and make the scythe blade appear when in combat. Make the scythe blade change appearance based on element, for instance make it a blue ice blade when attuned to water. Fire and Air are self-explanatory, I think. Earth can be either a crystal blade, or just a sharp stone looking thing.

Wizard, uses Sword
(think about what was happening you Gandalf-lovers when they were developing during that time)

My guess is that the abilities/utilities and most traits will not change with specialization. Two things will happen, you’ll get use of a new weapon (sword or less likely, greatsword) and the class mechanic will be changed/tweaked.

For Wizard, the class mechanic will be a focus more towards a specific element types (you get two elements but can swap weapons with a cooldown between weapons while in combat). i.e. you can play as a Fire-attuned Staff and Sword/Dagger-attuned Air only.

What about element melds?

Instead of Air,Fire,Water,Earth you get Smoke,Magma,Ice,Mud…

Now that would be a lot of rework since all the weapon combos… but wow that would be interesting….

..so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should

I mentioned something like that too although, since currently fire att already has magma, water att already has ice and earth kinda has mud already, I break it into 2 blended fusions.

The specialization could have access to 2 of the 4 atts plus a mechanic that let’s them temporarily fuse them into a sort of 3rd att.

I had another idea this morning, not sure if others thought of it yet.

What if they do something that removes the Attunements and instead makes you like a “Zephyrite” elementalist. Instead you gain the ability to equip two weapons which have skills from existing attunements placed on them. For example Staff might have Air 1, Fire 2, Water 3, Earth 4, Fire 5. Then add in additional weapon set to this as well with a few new moves like a sword or mace main hand. This new spec would be focused around mobility (something Zephyrites are known for).

Boom, lore and class all in one.

A zephyrite elementalist has been suggested previously, but in different ways to what you suggested.

Your suggestion currently could be a specailization, but it doesn’t really seem like it should be connected to the zephyrites. The zephyrites aren’t really known for mobility, they are known for channeling the sun, the wind, and lightning. The more interesting thing about this is that they are elementalists that only focus on the air and fire while neglecting earth and water.

Your idea would fit better in the mold of a battlemage
