Name: “Kaide” (Kaine is just the account name)

I’m a bit of a guild wars 2 historian…..and I could be wrong….but isn’t the continent AND planet called Tyria? So shouldn’t the spell be called “Tyria Attunement”….since no one on the planet….or the galaxy….knows what Earth is.

Earth as in one of the elements, not the planet.
Earth as in one of the elements, not the planet.
The element is Tyria….

Depends on what came first. The name for dirt and the like, or the name for the planet on which we preside?
Depends on what came first. The name for dirt and the like, or the name for the planet on which we preside?
So your saying they named the makeup of the element of the planet “earth”….then came back and named the continent AND the planet Tyria?
Depends on what came first. The name for dirt and the like, or the name for the planet on which we preside?
Logically, I’d imagine the name for dirt would come first. Cavemen saw dirt long before they knew what continents or planets were.

So the cavemen named the dirt earth?
Let me find my time machine and ask.

In that case then the same could be said of Tyria and those ancient beings might have randomly called their dirt “earth” as well but the difference lies in who named the planet. I’m sure there is some infinite diverging universes theory out there that points to this as well.

Why not?
Just to clarify…..Earth is a planet….dirt is dirt…..If thats the case then it should be called “Dirt Attunement”. The reality is that Earth is not dirt….and Earth does not exist….the ability logically should be called “Tyria Attunement” not “Earth Attunement”

The classical element of “earth” has been in thought since Plato back in 400 B.C. Our planet was named after it some time in the 1400’s…
Very possible that the inhabitants of Tyria named the classical elements of fire, air, water and earth first, and than named their planet whatever they wanted.
Earth, noun […] 2. the loose soft material that makes up a large part of the land surface.
There is no reason it has to be the same as the name of the planet.

5.
the solid matter of this planet; dry land; ground.

The element earth come before the ‘planet Earth’ and there are no continent on Earth called Earth.
You are mixing up the element earth with the planet Earth.
It just happened in English the name of this planet is the same as the element earth.
(edited by chanw.1934)
By the way, the word “earth” applying to both land and the planet is more of a Latin thing – it is not the same in all languages.
In German and English, Erde (Earth) applies to both Ground (dirt) and the Planet Earth.
In Semetic languages this is not the case.

Element of Dirt/Mud just didn’t have that catchy ring to it.
Give us Rock Attunment. Nobody will deny that Elementalists Rock! :o

Dirt Attunement is easy as heck, albeit very slow.
Just don’t bathe for a couple of days, and you automatically start attuning to dirt.
Unfortunately you randomly start spawning dirt elementals during this attunement process. They have to be defeated by your summonable Dirt Vaccuum weapon. They give pretty good experience, but no loot.
A shortcut some people take is using a trait called “One With Mud”. It involves covering yourself with mud in order to attune to Dirt instantly. It also gives protection against Predators.

Pay attention that using this attunment may increase merchant prices!
It’s simple.
“Earth” is a planet.
“earth” is a synonym for dirt/soil.
Note the capitalization difference.

Nope because you have Elona and Cantha on the same planet so why call it after 1 continent???
Personally, I’m disappointed ANet chose only 4 elements for this class to attune to. What about Psychic, Poison, Steel, and Grass?! I want a gosh darn PSYBEAM ATTACK!
The same word (earth) being synonymous with land/soil/dirt/rocks/etc and the planet is based on your language….
Not to say it only happens in English, but not all languages translate the same way.
This would be like calling it Terra attunement if it was used here.
We use these words interchangeably because we live on one planet. The same is true of our sun. We call it “the sun” when it’s name is Sol
@scribbles, you just made my day.
@OP If we’re gunna be like that….
How did all of tyira start called swords, swords? and towns towns? and lasers lasers? and boots boots? and fish fish? and…. etc etc etc.
Unfortunately some things arent going to be congruous wiht ‘another world’ because you’d have to invent new words for everything, and probably a whole different language base, if they even speak at all.
Or you could see Earth as the object and tyria as the name.

Because we are not pokemans… but that would be kittens cool! OR better yet being able to choose which attunments we get!
In Chinese, Earth (the planet) is literally “land ball” (two words). That same word for land would be used for something like “I own that plot of land”. The word for dirt/earth is something different entirely.
Earth is just the english translation of dirt/earth. Don’t need to be so literal with it.
