Hi all, ive been playing engineer for a while and im still an overall noob to the game. My biggest problem is that i don’t know when to use which abilities. We have so many! when should i be using the flamethrower over my rifle? when should i be using tool kit or grenade kit over something else? Should i ever use gadgets? What skills are better than having a kit equipped? (how can one skill be better than 5?) these are a few of the questions i have about the class thanks for answering!

Seeing as my launcher has refused to work now after approximately 100+ crashes I find that I have a plethora of time to entertain you tonight! Engineer is a complicated class and despite what many players suggest, is generally not used in the “faceroll” sense. If you find yourself lost in a sea of cooldowns, then you are (more often than not) playing incorrectly. Just as Elementalist has many combos that are executed with precision, you will find that many Engineer skills share common or synergetic cooldown; making them ideal to be performed together, but not required. The only skills that the community would unanimously suggest you avoid would have to be Turrets (excluding Healing Turret), as they offer little to nothing in PvE and are garbage for PvP.

A few tips to you for your self discovery:

  1. Learn what skills are your combo fields and know what you get from each projectile, blast, and leap through them.
  2. Rebinding your keys can go miles! I prefer to change the natural weapon swap into a specific kit swap (my number 8 ). Combine this with a mouse that has thumb keys (7/9) and your reaction time sky rockets.
  3. Discover what skill combinations share reasonably similar cool downs in your build and try to work them into a skill “chain”. This makes it easier to identify when you are able to perform an offensive or defensive maneuver by knowing when the first of said chain is now available again. Function key skills are also great for keeping a numeric cooldown to this effect.
  4. Have fun with the class! This is crucial, because you are going to either love or hate being an Engineer. There is no middle ground. This is a play style that either makes them your main or your storage toon.
