My engineer experience
Welcom to the GW2!
Just a side note: contrary to WoW or other MMOs there is no holy trinity (DPS/Healer/Tank) in this game, everyone can play as a pure damage or more team-support character (and especially in dungeons you’ll notice that people often want only pure DPS specs), but of course some professions are better at one thing than other. Engie is famous for its flexibility so its arguably easier to switch between those two roles.
Welcome !
Let us know if we can help with any questions.
Welcome.
What mirmil said is partly true.
He’s right in people only wanting dps specs in the current PvE side of Gw2, but there is indeed a trinity, even tho it’s not a holy one.^^
Basically you can spec any class towards pure dps, controll & support.
These roles are very fluid & usually combine elements of the 2 others, even if you decide to focus on one role. This is especially true for the engineer, since regardless what roles we specialize for, we usually have limited access to the other roles as well.
Our dps specs f.e. not only come with direct dmg, but with vulnerability stacking as well, hence buffing the groups overall dps, so there goes the support part for it. Further we usually bring a high amount of combo-fields & blast-finishers, allowing for either group-buffing, healing or stealthing. And last but not least, even our most pure dps rotations come with skills that optionally offer cc’s as well, allowing – if used with a brain – for precise placement of bosses or trash-control in general.
If we decide to go for controll, you’ll soon notice that many of our controll skills either are tied to high-hitting attacks, or in case of condition-cc’s (blind, chill, immob, cripple, poison, confusion) profit greatly from condition duration, hence buff the raw condition-dmg output greatly as well.
Also many of our support builds are tied to direct dmg as well, most prominent example being the trait “bunker down” in inventions, which drops mines & band-aids to the same time, while the healing turret also deals minor dmg and can be used as offensive cc.
And apart from these 3 main-types of builds, you’ll always try to pack as much mobility(leaps / swiftness / superspeed), survivability (invulnerability, protection/aegis/resistance/ stability uptime, personal healing, blocks) & utility (combo-fields/finishers, stealth) into your builds as possible.
Don’t forget that especially in WvW, the right buff-food can make the difference between solid or crappy builds, and it’s always a good idea to read up on the wiki about all the runes & sigils out there.
Once you get a hang of what you can pack into a single build, you’ll easily find your personal sweet-spot between your personal preferences & maximum build-synergy. And that’s exactly the point where you’ll own people left & right.
Keep in mind that gw2’s combat system is action based, so a good build is only half the way to success. The other half comes from your knowledge, reflexes & experience.
Keep yourself motivated, and you’ll soon become a valuable part of any party you join, because that is the true strength of engis: Making group-compositions work by filling whatever role is needed

Ok so i was really noobish.
I went to http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki
and i learned about about marauder rifle build
I felt self conscious and compassionate for my guild mates. We would lose games so i wanted to help them. And i adjusted my build and skills and play a more tanky, sustain damage dealer with lots of stuns and minor healing.
I know there is no trinity, but i like to help my teammates out.
A few things i wanted to mention was….
The tool wrench’s pull doesn’t always seem to work, i know that is a topic and i have first hand experience. Sometimes it goes on coldown and nothing happens.
also i tend to be the first one to get blowned up in SPvP and when i am not focused we ACTUALLY win fights. I am not going to be arrogant and say it’s because of me, but engineer seems to be a hard profession to play in SPvP because we have to analyze the fight and react and be flexible.
I feel less noob and more better at playing pvp, but i feel like i need allies to help me kill an enemy.
1v1 i can sometimes win, if the enemy is clumsy, noob, or lacks heavy damage. Hammer wars and hammer guardians do way too much damage for me, but medium armor and light armor cprofessions are actually pretty “fightable” in 1v1
In team fights, i use rifle tools, grenades, and either defense tiny elixer, or slick shoes or ram. I will bring more cc if i can but usually i am the team tank.
I don’t always play defensively or offensively i try to cc people and apply pressure on the enemy team.
Sorry i am ranting a lot. I am having a lot of fun doing structured pvp with maurader pvp build. I feel like a tanky rogue from wow. Or a controlling tanky dps.
I know in pve i went condition grenades and i farm a place called silvershard waste with my guild.
Engineer is fun, but man i feel bad when i don’t react fast enough in SPvP or i let someone die.
Any ways i’ll shut up now. Thanks for reading, i am trying to improve my self so THANK YOU for the feedback and tips. Much appreciate you all. Have fun playing engineer and goodluck.
First of all. Engineer is one of the hardest profession to master so don’t worry. I played the game a lot in PvP and played around 1200 matches when i first started to play engineer. It took me around 100 games before I was really comfortable with it and really confident in me in 1vs1 fight. So don’t worry if you have some difficulty. It’s perfectly normal with the profession to started with.
Marauder Rifle engineer don’t give you much room for error. You are probably better off with a Soldier Rifle Engineer. It’s a better build overall and will be easier to survive at first.
For the magnet (Tool wrench pool). It’s unblockable, but you can still dodge it, it need a target, it can be out of range or the target can have stability/invulnerability, etc. So that probably because one of those 4 reasons that sometime it just don’t work and go on cooldown. It’s not a bug, it’s just how it work. Now if the target is knockdown instead of being pull, that seem to be a current bug of the skill.
The tool wrench’s pull doesn’t always seem to work, i know that is a topic and i have first hand experience. Sometimes it goes on coldown and nothing happens.
Yep, most pulls have this issue. Part of the problem is that your target might be dodging when the pull actually goes off, or you may have lost line of sight at the moment of the pull, but there does seem to be a bug here exacerbating the problem.
also i tend to be the first one to get blowned up in SPvP and when i am not focused we ACTUALLY win fights. I am not going to be arrogant and say it’s because of me, but engineer seems to be a hard profession to play in SPvP because we have to analyze the fight and react and be flexible.
Elixer S is your friend.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.

This is Magnet, and it is indeed a buggy piece of kitten and complaining about it is the #1 reason I come to the forums. :P
That being said, you may also be coming up against Stability, or certain traits, namely the Ranger’s trait Shared Anguish.

Welcome.
Quite cool to see how fast you learn and adjust after just a mere few weeks.

Thats how engi is … ENGI CAN DO EVERYTHING … You just need to know how Also Engi can outheal almost all dmg , but wasting some decent dmg stuff … so far in my opinion Find your own build and get your own experience
Welcome to Guild Wars 2, best of luck in your travels, really is a awesome game to get into.
