and i never had a problem after launch fighting regular mobs with my engineer.

so…wtf?

i DO agree that ANet are less than optimal developers, no PTR is a huge problem, and i DO agree about the favoritism or bugs like scope wouldnt go 8 months without a second thought,

but stop exaggerating, for the sake of everyone …including new players… about how much engie sucks.

engie does not suck.

There’s no exaggeration, all anyone has to do is play an engineer and then play a warrior in PVE and they’ll see the total difference, In fact, all they’d have to do is play anything other then a ranger/necro and then compare it to their engineer and they’ll notice right off the bat post level 30 just how big of a deficit there is in damage on the part of the engineer.

Want an example? sure. I played a ranger at level 40 and level 75 tested it without gear. I made him a trap ranger, 3 moves on both levels and enemies died very quickly. Did the same thing with my engineer with kits and without, there was an average of at least 10 moves that I needed to perform to do the same amount of damage. Both of these classes were specced for condition damage but somehow the traps on the ranger did more even in it’s weakened state. Tell me again how that’s balance?

Part of the problem is they changed what type of class it should be last minute before launch and no one took the time to make the appropriate changes to the trait lines.

Originally the engineer was supposed to be a soldier type class wearing heavy armor which would explain why the traits don’t really make for a great dps build when compared to what the engineer is claimed to be now, an adventurer.

The trait lines need to be completely redone if the engineer is to remain an adventurer type class. There are quite a number of dps enhancing traits on the two other adventurer trait trees that make the difference for those classes while if any engineer tries to come close to that they are pushed back by their trait line having way too many defensive abilities and low percentage damage enhancing traits.

It’s all in the math, and it’s no secret. I’m not claiming the engineer sucks as a class, I’m claiming their sense of balance sucks in the game. PTR would have cleared this up months ago because others who aren’t like me would have noticed this and said something in a communication medium the devs would have actually listened to instead of forums. (PTR bug reports) and the reason why they didn’t catch these things before launch? because these 7 months of nerfs hadn’t been put into the game yet.

It’s not falsehood when the evidence is in the gameplay without the enhancements afforded by the gear.

Ignore nakoda. He is ALWAYS trying to get engineers nerfed, while telling us that anet buffed them. I’m not sure what his game is, but I bet he spends a LOT more time trolling this forum than actually playing.

Did you read your own posts in this thread? You say engineers are just fine, when it’s the least played class and it gets nerfed every patch. Telling anet that engineers have no issues is just insane. Not to mention all of your “The sky is falling” lines in any thread that posts real issues with the class.

And ‘letting my pointless perjury pass’? Seriously?

There’s quite a number of nakoda’s on these threads I’ve noticed, one of the more frequent arguments against the truth is:

“I play an engineer in spvp.tpvp.wvw and even tho I use a cookie cutter niche build, one of the only ones I can get to work, they’re all perfectly fine in pve”

It’s endless it seems, PTR is still the best way to test and unfortunately those who claim otherwise have alterior motives to personal gain of fame.

And unfortunately the promise of separating the pvp and pve changes hasn’t really happened or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

are you saying my build is cookie cutter? how many months of arguing did it take to even get a few people to agree that the FT is viable.

i’ve also been a proponent for a ptr.

edit: furthermore, the trend of my posts has been to rail against people who preach 100nades/HGH as the only way to play.

not sure what you guys are trying to imply here.

also, if you need to attack me and my not arguments, you are a waste of bandwidth.

PVE is harder for engineers then for other classes, that’s a given even when using niche pvp builds with slight adjustments for pve.

(waits for the obligatory “lrn2play” “we elitists don’t need moar dps in pve” reply we see all too often.)

When the number of attacks for your toon to kill a standard mob is three times the number of any other class there’s something seriously wrong and I don’t mean having to wait on cooldowns between the thousand grenades or other some such single blast niche attacks people like to use in WvW either, or prolonged fight condi/might stacking, we’re talking about standard initial hit pve damage.

I saw your “builds” and “game-play advice” post on flamethrower, however they are meaningless. Why don’t you make a video and prove what you are talking about before defending the actual state of the Engineer. Do you enjoy contradicting yourself with so many other players? How about leaving your rich imagination apart and show some facts for a start?

i’d love to make a video, but as I have posted many times, my 6 year old e8400 system can’t handle the workload of writing video while playing at the same time.

this will change soon.

could you please elaborate on what you mean by contradictory? from what I can tell in my guide there is good discussion and feedback from several players.

there are also dozens of threads on the FT with information in them.

not sure what you are getting at, because the “meaningfulness” isn’t up to me, it is up to you and what you take away from it.

telling me that my video-less guide is meaningless is like telling BradyGames that every one of their publications is meaningless.

the guides and posts i’ve made include gameplay advice, combo suggestions, “mindset” tips, even class specific advice. what is it, other than a video, that might make it more meaningful to you?

I can confirm at least one of Nakoda’s builds works very well. The problem I met is that I felt limited: turrets force you to stand in one point, so you better hope the enemy is gonna attack that point, or you may be useless. And again, I was never able to survive a heavy outrunning situation for long enough.

When put in the right situation, turrets are really strong. But the main problem ANet didn’t solve yet is they are still not versatile enough, considering the fact you are forced to use at least 2 utility slots to make this works.

Another thing: I’m starting to thing that an element that REALLY pays-off is stat optimization: even if you don’t have “l33t skillz”, the very fact you have a little bit of everything makes you superior to other opponents. Even mesmers have problems facing me (and I STILL have a hard time telling what’s going on, fighting mesmers). FT+Juggernaut lets you do that, while having great cc with turrets. Against some opponents, all I needed to do was pressing 1 until they were dead. Sure, it’s the worst thing you can do with flamethrower… but kitten it’s satisfying!XD

But I still think ANet should buff gadgets (Rocket Boots), tweak bomb kit (no one is getting hit by them anymore: they just WALK out of them), buff Super Elixir (I used to be a bunker like you, guardian, but then I took a Kit Refinement nerf to the kneeXD), fix Scope and so on. And adjust camera for norns and carrs. Don’t force me to play an Asura in spvp.

I also think engineer’s kit skills should be stronger: we have to press more buttons to use them, so we are more likely to make errors. When I see an engineer fighting other enemies, they always look as if they were less skilled, less fluid. That’s obvious: they have to press at least the double the buttons the enemy has to press. So they double the errors on average. If we want to use a combo burst, we have to constantly switch kits. I think we all agree it’s harder and requires much more precision. So it should also be more rewarding.

You will never be able to know what an engineer is going to do next…

if you hold a point all map and no one contests it, i do not think that you were useless. you were doing exactly what you were supposed to be doing, and were one of the most useful people on the team.

personal points != usefulness.

all that matters is win vs lose. technically, you capping the point and holding it for 4 minutes is ~100 points (I think? one pt per 2 seconds for a node, + 10 for capping it?), which equates to 20% of your team’s victory. On a 5 man team .. that is .. perfect.

I have lasted upwards of 2 minutes against multiple opponents simply by controlling, misdirecting, and evading them. I am not doing much damage to them while doing this, but if 2-3 of yoru foes are focused on you, … and not accomplishing anything for their efforts …, that is time wasted for them, and time gained for your team to handle other matters.

In 1v1 defenses, I rarely ever die. Rogues last less than 30 seconds … assuming they don’t run after 15 seconds. Rangers, Necros, and Messies are the threats.

Ele are only dangerous if they catch you off guard and get off their burst rotation, but that is rare and far between, especially with protective shield and protection injection.

Well, it happened only when my team was losing, while I stayed at homepoint (my fault, I got nervous :P).

But yeah, builds like this (average armor, high healthpoints, protection stacking) can survive surprisingly well, considering they are not bunkers.
