Weak and underpowered.
To the OP: Engineers aren’t under-powered, Pistols are. There’s a problem afflicting Pistols that make their #1 skills have the same rate of fire as rifles when they’re designed to be faster.
Engi is alright, the main problem is they knee jerk nerfed pistol around the time of BWE3. If they unnerf that we’d be in a better position.
Also I hate grenades. They’re alright but it’s SO MUCH EXTRA WORK.
Engineers are quite strong. The profession requires some actual thought, and there is far more to the game than just damage.
Engineer is NOT a dps class. (We can go DPS but its not as good as others obviously.) Engineer is best suited for control. We can dish out moderate damage while keeping the enemy stunlocked, posioned, and whatever else… We can play AMAZING support in dungeons and our utility is second to mesmers.
If your a SPvP’er. You will quickly find that Control is everything in today’s metagame. Rifle + Net turret force foes into pure lockdown. Dual Pistols and the correct spec allows for a untouchable Vigor/Condition build. Nothing is as funny as using Slick Shoes on a Thief who is trying to flank you. Or unloading miles away from a warrior stuck in piles of nets. (Also, Bunker builds of OPness, but I haven’t run that one yet.)
In PvE Elixer gun + Healing turret, nuff said. One can also run yet another control build here. To keep bosses off the squishy Ele trying to heal. And the “Useless” flamethrower can get you to the closest thing to tanking!
Engineer is unlimited. Bar a few bugs to be squished this feels like a perfect class. Change up some builds, find a spec that fits your play style. You’ll learn quick. We all did.
The developers intentionally designed some professions to be simpler than others. So it’s quite true when people say that some professions can achieve as much damage as engineers can with 1/4 the button presses—but in return, engineer players get more rewarding, less repetitive profession, with many strengths that are difficult to discover. If we had a 3-button “win” combo, no one would enjoy the crazy 22-button dance that is our kit mechanic.
I PvE with a P/P & Toolkit build (10/30/0/20/10) which works exceptionally well. I regularly gather up tons of mobs and burn them down. In WvW I stick to the exact same unless defending, at which point I use Grenades instead of TK.
WvWvW is a mode dependant of other players, same with Dung/PvE ( except solo- but its vs AI) how these two styles can determine the strength of the engineer?
Necro 80 W3
Engii 80 PvE
in that case what class is weaker?
Ranger, quite obviously. You could make an argument about warriors too, unless you just want to play 8v8 hotjoin and kill awful people over and over.
Balance is actually in a pretty good spot right now. The nerfs to mesmers, thieves and guardians have brought them into a vaguely balanced state, warriors, eles are at about the right spot. Necro and engi are both roughly balanced but need a lot of bug fixes. Rangers need a lot of work.
Weak damage? You guys should try the Bomb Kit in PvE or PvP. With a proper spec, your autoattack bombs can crit for 2.5-3k, which makes for lethal point defense. Big Ol’ Bomb is a 4-6k crit with that epic knockback. Rifle will average 1.5k on autoattack. And no, you don’t have to be a complete glass cannon to reach those numbers, especially with active mitigation like the Smoke and Glue bombs boosting your inherent survivability.

Usage is easy: drop bombs on contested points. Abuse Smoke Bomb and Big Ol’ Bomb. When you’re off point, facing ranged opponents, or need extra CC, switch to the Rifle. Make sure you use Elixir B frequently. PvE should honestly be even simpler, considering the AI and the power of Smoke Bomb.
Smoke bomb’s quite a bit less powerful now after the nerf. But still a decent survivability cooldown.

Double AoE blind with a 4 second Smoke field is still fantastic, especially since the extended duration allows for more stealth and blinding combo finishers, and 180 range will still cover most of a standard capture point. I haven’t noticed my survivability change since the nerf, honestly.
Extremly powerfull Ya say Dreamy? Explain me then why there is SO FEW engii builds over the internet GW2 sites?
Why there is SO FEW engiiners every PvP match i played, every RvR i ve saw so far?
i can’t say its useless class- it’s just low in everything compared to other dps classes/builds.Because majority of players I have seen dont know how Engineer works.
Actually, most dont really know the combat system or mechanics by much from what I see in both PvP and PvE.I sPvP with Engineer a lot before. And PvEd ever so much before no adays.
I have tons of Stratagies using engineer. I use tons of utility skills and weapons for different possible situations. I enjoy getting in depth with all my classes and learn it’s full capabilities. Engineer is no exception.
I played: Engineer, Elementalist, Ranger, Warrior, and Mesmer.
I dont read up “Builds” online to play my class. I work on my own and experiment and challenge myself in combat to learn what works and what doesnt depending on those different possible situations.
Its a skill based game. And that’s the way I like it. =)
I am on BP, and I WvW fairly often. I’d love to talk to you about it (unless you are in TRI, in which case we already have!)
It was fun showing you my engineer strategies.
Sadly I wish I could show you more but you had to go so soon. =(
We have lots to learn from each other. =) keep it up.
