You’re right, the name doesn’t really fit the theme of the Guardian profession. I just think the name itself is kind of neat and that’s it. I was honestly hoping for something like Justicar, Winged Knight or even Vanquisher to name a few.

Oh thank god….I feel better now. Thanks!!!!!

I like it for what it means for the profession. I don’t think the name Dragon Hunter is particularly inspiring or anything, but the name itself doesn’t matter to me. What it proposed to bring and it’s concept is very telling.

Initially, I too thought the name didn’t fit guardians, but after reading the article, I can see that was intentional.

Dragonhunters are meant to feel different from Guardians, to show a change of resolve, motivation and playstyle in-game. They are not only protecting the innocent with benevolent magic, but now go on the offensive to bring the monsters down in a more aggressive way. Of course, someone could very well dislike this change of direction, but that doesn’t make it out of sync with the intention behind the spec.

As for the name, the very least you could do is wait for the full reveal. You are overreacting, when you are up in arms without even knowing what the spec actually does. The elite skill’s name already hints at a more draconic flavour, which could be further explored by the rest of the kit and justify the use of the name.

My only beef with the name is that its more “hunter” than “dragon hunter”. that bow skin is just about the only part of it that’s dragon related from what i’ve seen. Then again with bosses coming up like the wyvern the name might be spot on

I actually love the name. As soon as I saw it I immediately was excited. Dragonhunter is a very common fantasy archetype that includes specific skills from all types of media and games (like the tabletop variety). I don’t think it was laziness on the part of Anet (yes everyone hunts dragons) as it was describing an archetype just like Druid, or Necromancer. It is very different that I bet anyone expected.

I am very excited to have my guardian, a wielder of justice mold his abilities to make these creatures of destruction his prey. It feels especially fitting being that he is a sylvari.

I don’t think that “Dragonhunter” per se is a bad class name. But good lord… it just doesn’t make any sense in the universe of Guild Wars. Usually I’m very satisfied with ANet when it comes to lore but this just doesn’t make any sense. Every player is a dragon hunter.

Additionally it’s doubtful that the name makes sense from a gameplay perspective either. Why would it? Dragonhunters are unlikely to be especially useful against dragons since boni like these are incorporated into Masteries.

The name just feels too random to me.

Everyone might hunt dragons, but not everyone is a Dragon Hunter. Just like how everyone might fight in a war, but not everyone is a Warrior. The Dragon Hunter is basically a mix between the Final Fantasy style Dragoon and Monster Hunter’s… Hunters. Maybe I’m fine with it because I see the inspiration and I see where Anet needed to make a twist, but I like it. Now, it wasn’t my #1 choice in Guardian spec themes, but when Anet mentioned someone was going to get some trap access, I certainly did my daydreaming on what Guardian traps might look like, and I think tomorrow we’ll be in for a treat.

Guardian should not become a hunter. Fits better for Ranger or Warrior. Both of those are more alike to Dragoon and MH.

I like the name. It was pretty unexpected, but I think it fits the context of the story quite well. The best defense is a good offense, and clearly Anet wanted the guardian to have a more viable ranged DPS option. As far as lore goes, it seems to me that guardians decided to become more aggressive in their tactics for taking down dragons.

It is far from what we all expected, but I am ok with the name. It might be a bit confusing to many, as in why does the Guardian get a Dragonhunter specialization when we are all technically hunting dragons? But I suspect that Anet will incorperate some kind of lore as to why guardians can specialize this way. But at the end of the day, it is just a name. Someone can be called an assassin but that doesn’t mean other non-assassins cannot assassinate people.

Another thing to remember is that Dragonhunter is a specialization, not a profession name. We will be a Guardian specializing as a Dragonhunter. They mentioned this in the AMA or some other recent stream I believe. The Mesmer will be a Mesmer specializing as a Chronomancer, not simply a Chronomancer.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

Personally, I’m not bothered by the ‘Hunter’ part or the concept of traps on Guardians although I really didn’t see it comming. I also actually like the new active effects of the virtues. People might argue that hunting isn’t a theme for Guardians. But that’s no valid argument against it since specializations are supposed to add new dimensions to a class. May it be skill or themewise.

I’m very turned off by the ‘Dragon’ part, though. You might be right that not everyone to fight in a war is a Warrior. But in the context of Guild Wars 2 the title ‘Dragonhunter’ is extremly misleading/irritating since the the main plot arises around fighting dragons – which concerns every antagonist. Especially Sylvaris dream about this destiny. Now, I probably would be fine with it if Dragonhunters were actually outstanding at fighting dragons. However, it’s quite obvious that we don’t fight dragons on a regular basis to justify such an assumption.

When looking at FF, dragonknights or dragooners, or whatever they are called in the specific game, might represent a certain archtype (spear, jump and so on). But additionally a quite significant amount of their skills pays a tribute to dragons. It could be a damage boost against those creatures or just something associated with characteristics of dragons in the FF universe. We can safely assume that Dragonhunters won’t have any skills which dragons will be specifically weak to because there is no such thing in GW2 when it comes to the class- and skill-system. Could ANet create skills which relate to certain elder dragons? Yes, they could. But personally I expect this outcome to be unlikely. Even if it happened I’d wonder how Dragonhunters obtained those skills. It is more likely that skills will just have generic dragon-names plus animations which might not be reasonably backed up by lore. That’s the thing which upsets me.

Maybe ANet came up with an extremly sound backstory for why Dragonhunters deserve to be called Dragonhunters. Right now, I just don’t buy it.

I like the name Dragonhunter. Considering that dragon’s are the great evil of the world, and guardians have the justice/smiting evil theme going on, whats wrong with combining the two and saying “I smite the great evil, dragons”?

Paragon, justicar, etc. aren’t exciting and pretty bland imo and do not fit what they want to do with elite specs, which is to take unique spins on classes.

Because everyone is a “dragon hunter” regardless of class. Unless you’re implying that only Guardians are fighting the dragons.

Every profession fights in this war, so everyone should be a warrior.

My engineer protects the innocent (countless heart quests), revives the fallen (combat medic achievent) and heals the wounded (healing turret, med kit), so he should be a guardian.

From now on, I actually choose to take offence to the fact that guardians think themselves as the only altruistic profession in the game.

Every profession fights in this war, so everyone should be a warrior.

Then the term would be “fighter” or “soldier” not “warrior”. Since warrior is social class even more than a term for ‘someone who fights’.

My engineer protects the innocent (countless heart quests), revives the fallen (combat medic achievent) and heals the wounded (healing turret, med kit), so he should be a guardian.

That can also be called a “hero” (a title we all are referred to in game), “good samaritan”, or “soldier of fortune” (since hearts come with rewards). Also, a combat/field engineer is specifically what the engineer in GW2 is modeled after.

This is what type of engineer that is.

The combat engineer’s goals involve facilitating movement and support of friendly forces while impeding those of the enemy.

So nope, all still falls into what role the engineer is supposed to play.

From now on, I actually choose to take offence to the fact that guardians think themselves as the only altruistic profession in the game.

Cool tu quoque there bro.

Where are you getting that the guardian class is about altruism? If that were the case Guardians wouldn’t have any abilities that supported themselves.

Let me try to explain this as simply as possible. Barring a really kitten good explanation lorewise for the name and why this class is so special specifically as “Dragon Hunters”, the flavor of the class as dragon hunters is not something unique to them. You can say “oh every class fights so they’re all warriors/fighters” all you want but those names are much more broad and flexible (hence why they don’t get the same blowback). Dragon hunter is just a descriptor of someone who hunts dragons. This is the problem with an overly specific name for a task/mission that is not unique to them. Do you understand?

Even more specifically the question that needs to be answered is “what makes the Guardian specialization THE dragon hunter?”. So like I said, unless the devs can contort a really good reason lore-wise (because this is just a class flavor complaint) the name just does not work that well.
