Hi folks,
I recently came back to the game, and looking both to get into fractals and into competitive WvW. In addition, i’ve got the mats necessary to obtain a legendary, but can’t decide between a Greatsword or Hammer. I like both legendaries, but i’m trying to figure out which is more used in dungeon/fractal PvE and competitive WvW/SPvP. Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks! For clarification on higher fractals, is hammer pretty much required — or will greatsword work as well?

Hammer is good vs hard trash and bosses. Weapon swap would be GS for bursting, mace/focus for more blocks (mossman, archdiviner, mai trin), or staff when mobs run to an los spot for more cc.

Being able to retrait whenever lets you optimize in each fractal and not be locked into hammer all the time. Scepter camping would be good for bloomhunger and molten duo. GS + sword/focus would be good against dredge bosses, maw, and fractals with easy trash like thaumanova.

For dungeons GS + 1H builds are the way to go. GS is pretty much a staple of every build for bursting and grouping mobs. The only time it’s not worth using is against large hitbox bosses since scepter camping is best. Hammer is great for a lot of fractal content but GS is also useful there and better in open world and dungeons.

Even for easier content Hammer is still pretty powerful because it deals only slightly less damage than Greatsword but has the benefit of permanent Protection, which is about equivalent to everyone wearing Knight armor. That makes it very good option for less organized groups, e.g. PUGs.
However Hammer constantly creates a light field which blocks other fields, limiting your team’s options to generate Might with the fire field/blast finisher combo.
