Well, not much will change in terms of tactics with this change alone. But I don’t think this is a tactics-changing… tactic. I think what Anet is doing is basically putting the brakes on blowing through encounters so quickly. It’s not a huge speedbump, but I think it will be a noticeable one. My guess is, it’s the first step in what will likely be a more comprehensive reworking of statistics and their value, coupled with dungeon and general PVE redesigns. They’ve redesigned dungeons and encounters before, and I think they’ve been dropping hints about redesigns for months, what with their rhetoric about the living story potentially changing dungeons and all that. We’ve seen them tip-toe into that kind of thing already with TA.
Anyway, long story short, I really don’t think that it’s all that obscure what’s going on. They’re slowing down the pace a bit, likely in preparation for other changes.
What this patch shows me, is that pugs are going to get that much worse. Crit damage nerf means, things like proper might stacking will become very important. And since pugs can’t be bothered to run good builds, good luck trying to coordinate nice stacking without a class who can keep high team might.

At first I was excited, omg changes! Something new and exciting to do! Then I realized they are rarely good.
And Cat I am proud to report that I encountered a longbow camping warrior in CM today, and he never once placed a fire field down bless his soul.

Actually I’m pretty sure that by definition it won’t hurt pugs with bad builds one bit, since they rarely run balls out damage builds to begin with – which are the only ones affected by this.
Im inclined to agree with what dub has been saying. They claim its a 10% dmg decrease. But thats probably for the average beserker build. For those of us who run in optimized groups it will probably be a much larger nerf. About 30%. Im hoping dubs wrong.
im calling you all zerker drones because you are unwilling to look for other options which might open after this patch, zerker is best for running CoF p1 or for bragging about lupi solo kills.
Not so optimal when u do dredge fractal 49.
PS: I love your comeback about cleric gear. Shows your ignorance. There is more than just full zerker and cleric to this game
I am unwilling to look for suboptimal options. Once I will feel that my gear in full berserker is suboptimal, I will look for alternatives.
Using full berserker gear also requires experience and skill; it is not facerolling every boss.
If someone still is learning the ropes it is possible to find some mixed gear combinations which might give more survivability and forgive some mistakes. In the end though, if you know what to do and want to be more efficient: berserker gear.
The person she responded to was referring to pugs. So I was simply assuming these so-called flawless runs were with pugs. I also pugged as a dps guard (sword/focus build) before and I could definitely tell these runs were far from smooth. Still I rather fall back on a hammer build to give my team some extra support.
I feel that in the case of high fractals a Hammer (Guardian) will be sufficient if you know what to do and yes, still in berserker gear.

Hopefully as Anet goes through this exercise of ‘meta-shifting’, they determine the most interesting approach is to not give players an optimized choice in gear.
It still doesn’t change anything with only nerfing Crti Damage, at least in the next six month(my speculation), DPS meta would still hold its position strongly.
Changing DPS meta needs redesign the PVE mechanic, such as more complicated Boss fight, more usefulness and importance of Control/Support role.
It’s a big preject, still have a long way to go.
having heals crit would be kinda awesome tho.
Heals Criting should have been from the get go.
Anet really fouled that one up.

How can there ever not be an optimized choice in gear? Whatever gear is most effective immediately becomes the optimized choice. The only possible way that can be avoided is if there is only one gear choice. That’s honestly how it should have been to begin with. If there are not supposed to be any tanks, then there should never have been gear suggesting tanking. The same with healing. The only way they can force players to be on semi equal terms (at least with gear) is to provide a “uniform” for pve play. Just like they had to force players to stop being magic find leeches in pve…they should do the same with other misleading gear/stats.

It’s easy to think of ways to minimize or prevent ‘optimal’ gear choices. Immediately is your qualifier there. I can imagine an encounter where different bosses are affected differently by direct and condition damage for instance. That would mean if I’m out to be ‘optimal’, I’m swapping gear and even traits during the encounter.
Even more extreme, I don’t even see why a ‘de-optimization scheme’ can’t be dynamic on a boss so you can’t even swapping won’t do you any good. Imagine a phased boss where in one phase, he’s immune to crits, another, he’s ONLY damaged by crits. Can be anything you can think of really.

Essentially this idea is to lengthen the boss fight so players take turns. This sounds equally frustrating to all. Having one of my primary stats suddenly become useless, for a period of time, does not sound fun. This immune to crit idea would also break on crit functionality. I equally do not enjoy puzzle encounters. Approaches like this are only a mask for the real problem though…lack of foresight in gear design at launch. Failure to fully analyze the gap in condition damage versus direct damage in pve encounters. Failure to acknowledge the gap in effective output of gear with 3 damage stats versus gear with one damage stat. I still think they need to reduce pve down to one gear set to solve this problem.

No, the idea is to make gear choice matter by making encounter/mob designs that aren’t so 1 dimensional. If players do make choices that are smart, it doesn’t necessarily lengthen boss fights. On the other hand, if players choose to ignore making choices and stick with one set of gear, then there are obvious consequences to that.

Actually, that idea would encourage team diversity. It actually sounds pretty interesting to me.

The choice to tie WvW with PvE is where this all becomes a sticky situation. Since the optimal gear is on opposite ends of the spectrum for each game mode. Unfortunately, this means players will keep seeing builds on youtube of l337 WvW builds, and trying to bring them to PvE.
