I completely agree with you. I feel like the staff at Anet said “kitten it” and pulled a general name out a jar. Dragon Hunter? Nobody saw that coming because it’s so honestly bad.

I have several names for the new specialization but the trap idea is so terrible I can’t bring myself to insult the names I have in mind.

Paragon would be a neat throwback, or any of the 100 synonyms to angel would be great too. Dragonhunter is a flop, probably the product of bad marketing research weighing ‘dragon’ to be the end-all be-all. Here’s a hint, it’s not.

At least it’s not another instance of abusing “mancer”. Does anyone involved in fantasy even know what the word means..

It come from the greek manteía which mean divination. A mancer is a practitioner of a specific type of divination.

Exactly. So what do the Pyromancer, Hydromancer, Aeromancer, Geomancer, Necromancer and Chronomancer in GW2 have anything to do with prediciting the future?

It’s just a cheesy word that sounds cool and keeps being misused in fantasy settings.

I actually like the Dragon Hunter (even if, for once, his name is cooler in French than in English). It is actually what an Elite specialisation is about : a whole new way to play a class. If you want to play a melee guardian, you’ll get the new “normal” attributes, and it seems to be better (with more synergies between the branches) so its fine, but the DH basically bring support to a whole new level (there is a reason for why one of his skills destroys enemies arrows, I’m certain).

I agree with those who think that the DH isn’t as flashy as the Chronomancer, but it was a given : the magical classes will have flashier and more impressive looking specializations, but what I care is less the flash and more the bang. And the DH is definitely the equal of the Chronomancer here. Both seems to require a lot of hard work to reach their full potential and their peak is achieved through a timely work with other characters.

I agree. Especially when you start thinking of the possibilities. Runes of the Trapper anyone?

Personally I am 100% glad we didn’t get Paragons. I didn’t like the name to begin with, the Guardian is already supposedly a composite of Paragon and Monk, and from what little I know about Paragon, Guardian with a Longbow ain’t quite it. That said I can’t deny the name “Dragonhunter” is a little silly/on the nose. The skills are passable though and frankly I like Traps.

That said really pooor choice in armor far as I am concerned, though I understand why, and I’m guessing that gauntlet is the Elite Spec armor item, which is kinda disappointing. I mean I’m sure it’s really cool for some people its just not my thing. Was never fond of “lopsided glove sets”.

a name is important, why do you think people in the real word make up fancy new names for their jobs? It’s to make themselves feel better. Dragonhunter is seriously not a great name. Is it the worst name possible? I suppose not, but it’s not a great name. To begin with that should be two words, not one.

Also the French name is actually kinda cool, I really wish they would use the French name for the English name as well. Draconnier. That’s so much better.

Well yeah, the name could be “Dragon Knight”. The dragon part actually feels a bit… “uh?”

Dragon Knight sounds like a knight that serves a dragon, Dragon Hunter sounds exactly the opposite, and well … they ARE hunting a dragon and story-wise all the Dragon Hunters killed 1 Elder Dragon, so they deserve such title.

How about Dragonbane?

Oooooo, now that one would have been cool, and likely to be less assailed by people whinning “but we’re all technically dragon hunters!”.

That said I think what we’re misunderstanding here is the difference between someone who kills dragons, and someone who specializes in it. Its kinda like comparing the baked goods in your local grocery store to the contents of a patisserie.

Do you really give a rats butt what the name is?

After they showed us a teaser image prominently featuring Paragon-styled wings, and most people spent the last three days excited for Paragon, yes. Adding to this, Guardian already has a great many elements of Paragon stuff in them (One of their PVP titles is even ‘Champion Paragon’), so when you show off the paragon wings in your teaser image, what are most people going to be looking forward to?

I’m at least willing to give the class a try, but EVERY player hunts the dragons, the pact hunts the dragons, the biconics hunt the dragons. Paragon is at least a unique name, Dragonhunter is hopelessly generic in this setting.

I’m not sure if you were here before the release of GW2. But it was said from before the release of GW2 that Guardians were what Paragons and Monks dissolved into (I use dissolve because of people who just wanted a Paragon or a Monk). This means Paragons could never be a profession or even subprofession because it’s already a core of what the Guardian is overall by design.

Also “Paragon Wings”: Whoever said they were Paragon Wings? In a lot of Fantasy RPG most “Warriors of the Light” are depicted as almost angels/angelic and those usually have feathery wings associated with them, this is a pretty generic thing by itself.

I can understand people who came into GW2 later than release hoping for Paragon. But if anyone was here in the beginning it was pretty obvious that Paragons would never become a thing, unless your only experience with Fantasy RPGs is solely GW1 and nothing else ever (which is very highly unlikely but still possible).

Also Dragonhunter isn’t any more generic than “Warrior” or “Ranger” or even “Necromancer”.

Dragonhunter is absurdly general and cliche. It’s more like a ranger specialization than a guardian one. the name does not fit the profession in the least. No.

I played Imbagon pretty much forever. Paragons do not use what GW2 calls a spear. They use a 1h throwing weapon which is called a spear. It absolutely is not the 2h melee weapon of GW2, even if that were on land.

They could put that weapon in GW2 and call it “Javelin”, though. But, no, you’re objectively wrong, Nike, sorry. Terrestrial spear wouldn’t be Paragon any more than Longbow. At least Longbow is ranged for goodness sake.

Er, actually, they used throwing spears and the closest weapon to those in GW2 is pretty much inarguably Longbow (due to the way Scepters have been implemented). Not very close, but closer than GW2’s idea of a spear.

I’m not a huge fan of the name but I wonder if people are interpreting the name wrong. It’s not a hunter of dragons but a dragon inspired hunter akin to a Dragon Knight. The elite is called Dragon’s Maw. The wings to leap with F2 for more “dragoning.” This doesn’t sound like someone that hunts dragons but is “becoming one.”

If this is a case, it’s more of the former white knights somewhat succumbing to corruption to fight fire with fire.

‘Dragonhunter’ isn’t so much ‘hunts the Elder Dragons’ as it is ‘hunts big angry dragon-like things’. I will admit, I did not expect them to take their resident Paladin and turn him into Sir Hammerlock, but I’m going to err on the side of ‘this actually sounds pretty dang cool!’

For one, traps. It means the Guardian/Dragonhunter could now use Trapper runes if it likes, which would give Dragonhunter, and through it the base Guardian in some manner, semi-predictable access to Stealth. Yeah, not a lot of players like existing traps, but y’know what? Those are existing traps. Who knows how the Dragonhunter’s traps will work, eh?

For two, the new Virtue forms sound kind of awesome. Both of my existing Guardians basically just sit on all their Virtues except for Justice, because for the most part the Virtues are uninteresting and often counter-intuitive. Group Aegis is only helpful if my group knows I’m going to dump it on them, elsewise they’ll handle their own defenses as the game has taught them to. Resolve’s healing is…not high. And Justice only gets activated for trait benefits.

Spear of Justice works wonderfully with some of the reworked Justice traits (looking at you, Wrath of Justice), Wings of Resolve has a large number of potential applications what with being a giant freakin’ jump as well as an AoE heal, and Shield of Courage? Shield of Courage, my team can clearly and easily see I’m using, and can also clearly and easily see where the safety is. They know that getting behind the giant wall of light means they take less damage – it’s much more intuitive and party-friendly than the existing Courage.

For three, dat longbow. We don’t know much yet, and the trailer was not particularly helpful, no, but a long-range targeted Symbol, with some of the vicious new Symbol traits? Yeah. I’ll be waiting to see how that can be awesome as all get-out, and even if the longbow ends up sucking? Frankly I’d be thinking of taking the new specialization for the incredibly baller Virtues rework alone.

Yeah, it’s not specifically called the Paragon. It doesn’t really feel like a Paragon. The base Guardian is more of a Paragon than this thing, distance combat aside. From what we know, the Dragonhunter definitely feels more…primal, maybe? I’unno. I just think that unlike the Chronomancer, which I like but which also is a generic-y sort of thing, what I’ve seen/heard of the Dragonhunter makes it feel like it belongs in the jungle hunting dragons.

Is it the name I would’ve picked? Prolly not…but I’m warming up to it.

If my theories on how the dragon hunter specialization is going to come about lore wise come to pass I suspect the name will be quite fitting… My friends and I are of the theory that Eir is going to die and that Bhram is going to take up her bow in order to extract vengance on Mordremoth and the other elder dragons. Making him a well, Dragon Hunter.

Seraph

Sentinel

Anything other than Dragonhunter ArenaNet please...it feels like a title and nothing like a Guardian at all.

No spears no paragon…i dont want a paragon without a spear really. even a 2 handed melee spear would be nice. So i for one am thankful that they didnt paragons.

They should change the name to Dragon Knight though…in my opinion. It is the only thing i dont really like about the new specialization.

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

Speak for yourselves. You all can fight the dragons, defend against them, protect the weak. I hunt them.

With this name, i fear the only reason for them not to call the necro spec simply kittenty Death Knight is that WoW has those ands they won’t want that connection…Please don’t let them call it DK… PLEASE
