This build was primarily made for group play with my guild. You know, running through Karma Alley, world exploration, group farming, etc. I wanted to build a power house, that could provide some protection as well as lay out and take some damage.

First; here’s the build. We’ll get into theory below. (I am completely open to suggestions, but keep in mind it’s supposed to be a prot/dps balance, but more favored to Protection/Support)

Okay, weapon selection. I went with GS and Staff. The GS is for that heavy hefty damage. This will be your primary, It goes fantastic with Two-Hand Mastery under the Honor traits section. The staff is for range if you need to keep a little distance between you and the target(s) with some kiting. That’s also why I didn’t pick GS/Hammer, distance can save you, or your allies life sometimes… and I don’t see a point in doubling up on melee two handers.

So, let’s move on to slot skills.

In slot 6 I put signet of resolve. I thought about healing breeze, but decided against it since there is a lot more support to come. Plus, it has the highest heal rate, so I use it when I’m down to around 25% health.

Now to 7; Signet of Mercy: This helps with so much, you don’t even realize it. It helps with Virtue of Resolve, Signet of Resolve, Hold the Line!, Heal Area, and Light of Deliverance. Plus, you’re always going to have that one person who is going to die… Get them back instantly.

Moving on to 8; Hold the Line! Personally, I love this. As stated above, it coincides with SoM, which is great. It also reduces income damage by 33%, which is useful more often than many realize. Less damage coming in is always good.

Number 9 is Sanctuary, and I think it basically speaks for itself.

10; Tome of Courage/Tome of Wrath: You’re going to swap these back and forth depending on what kind of a mood your in. Up close and personal, kill kill kill, or looking out for others a little more. Play which ever one you feel better with. Personally, I like Courage a little more. But if I know I am going to need to drop excessive damage for a bit, I’d swap to Wrath before going into Battle

TRAITS!!!!!!!
As stated above it’s 30/10/0/30/0

In Zeal,
I put V (Shattered Aegis) first, this works with Virtue of Courage (F3) and that’s the only thing that seems best for this build in the beginning slot.
Next, VII (Greatsword Power) +5% GS Damage. YES!!!
Moving on to XII (Zealous Blade) Heal yourself when kill-a-fool with your GS? YES!!!

Radiance, I just went with II (Signet Mastery) because I didn’t think anything else was beneficial with 10 point after putting 30 into Zeal and Honor) But, you’re probably going to use those quite a bit if you’re up close and personal smackin’ mobs in the face with that GS like you’re Katt Williams pimp slappin’ some… never mind, i’ll keep in clean…

Honor! Okay, we’re rolling with I (Wrathful Spirit) to work with Virtue of Courage. Next, Two-Handed Mastery, 20% faster recharge on Two-Handed weapon skills. This has yes written all over it’s face like that one guy who passed out that party and woke up with sharpie drawn male appendages all over his cheeks and forehead. Simply because there is so much healing we need to lay out attacks as much as possible, and this helps that happen. Number XII (Battle Presence) Again working with Virtue of Resolve (F2) so it affects allies, which is pretty awesome in my mind.

Battle Rotation (weapons)
Okay, here’s what I do, and feel like it works great.
On the Approach run up with the staff if it’s a Melee mob. Lay down 5 (Line of Warding) followed by 3 (Symbol of Swiftness) being laid on top of them to deal some
damage, and when your allies run in to melee them they’re going to get some super cool swiftness. Now slam 2 (Orb of Light) out of the park like Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire battling over a home-run record. Swap to the GS and hit 3 (leap of Faith) followed by 4 (Symbol of Wrath) to get that 1sec of Retaliation, then close off with 2 (Whirling Wrath) for that Spinny McSlicy action. Now, dodge roll backwards twice because this is going to heal allies twice from the Selfless Daring (15 points in Honor) now you should be ready to swap back to the Staff and repeat the process.

Slot Skill Rotation:
There really isn’t much of a specific rotation here. Just try to always make sure you have Sanctuary up for whoever needs it, and if you have to activate Signet of Mercy make sure you put Sanctuary on top of them… Use Hold the Line every time it’s available for the buff.

Tome of Courage/Wrath:
This build is more in favor of support and works better with Courage than Wrath, but it doesn’t mean Wrath can’t lay out some heavy hits. It’s just designed to work more with Courage.

Sigils, Runes, and Jewels, Oh My!
I chose Sigil of Superior Restoration for both weapons for the healing factor. I want to avoid death as much possible because I want to do my best at keeping allies alive too.

I chose 3x Superior Rune of the Warrior for Vit/Pow and 3x Superior Rune of Mercy for Toughness and Support benefits.

Soldiers Amulet, pretty obvious, Power, Toughness, and Vitality.

Jewels; Heal, Power, Toughness. Once again, pretty self explanatory.
It would probably be best to do Armorsmithing, and Weaponsmithing or Artificing with this. So you can craft your own crap. I chose Armorsmithing, and Weaponsmithing so I could do Artificing with Tailoring on the Mesmer I plan to do next. If you do this, once 80, and 400 in both crafts I would go with making a box of Cleric’s Draconic Armor, and Cleric’s Pearl Broadsword (get Cleric’s Pearl Quarterstaff from Trading Post) and run with these until you’ve gotten your Legen…wait for it…wait for it….wait for it…dary! item. Okay everyone, that basically wraps it up. I hope this works for you, I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you had fun while reading this.

Zeal is a pretty meh trait line, especially Zealous Blade (It’s like a 25 point heal that is unaffected by healing power). You’ve got a lot invested into aegis but virtue of courage has a 90 second cooldown. I really think you’d be better served going with a 0/10/30/30/0 altruistic healing+shout build or something similar.

I surely mean no offense, but let’s let him/her have his fun. I sometimes use Altruistic Healing, but it doesn’t mean that only those types of builds are “best” or the ones to prefer/use. Although I haven’t used more than 25 Zeal in months (and only few times at that), there’s no reason Zeal won’t work for someone out there-it’s not as if those 300 Power points are totally negligible.

I do believe Zealous Blade should benefit from Healing Power, even if in a watered down manner, quite honestly, but the developers seem to think otherwise. I don’t see how healing more than 25 per hit is in any way or fashion OP-especially since not everybody goes for full honor either way. It would be fun if they make that change, for I bet some players will try Zeal more often than what they seem to be trying ATM. Apart from the suspect Zealous Blade, spirit weapon builds benefit greatly from Zeal, and it’s a consideration.

All this said, Valeyra is enjoying the game with the playstyle that works for him/her, as we should all do, rather than emulate “successful builds” for the sakes of meta-gaming/having the supposedly “best” build. If I used a Greatsword, I would also at least try the Zeal line some times, though I admit I like to emphasize Honor over everything else (even above Valor.)

Not commenting on Zeal because I haven’t really tried it outside of a 10/25/x/x/x build (for the combination of 10% damage to burning and % damage increase to anything affected by conditions). However, generally speaking, if you’re running with a group/guild, consider that Guardian is the best source of AOE stability. Stand Your Ground or Hallowed Ground are very beneficial to your group.

hmmm…. tbh I think going the 0/10/30/30/0 route is a better option (OP can have his fun. just saying) but with gear dedicated to increasing dmg. IE Berzerker gear. Good survivability from AH and EM and massive damage from the gear.
