Tuesday balance changes
Unless I misheard, Shield of Judgment will be normalized at 4 seconds of Protection and will gain 4 seconds of Aegis. I was just complaining recently about how the Guardian has many traits relating to Aegis, but little application of it. This should help with a potential 16 second cooldown.
Shield of Absorption sounds much better now, but I’ll wait to see it in practice. Destroying projectiles while moving is a lot more interesting than being stationary. I still wish there was some sort of gain for doing so as it does not trigger on-block effects (small amount of health gained when destroying a projectile?), but I won’t complain on Shield receiving two amazing buffs.
Feel My Wrath’s cooldown increase is justified. 30 seconds was far too low for 5 seconds of Quickness. I use this on my PvE Guardian, and I won’t cry over the change.
Save Yourselves should help turn the tide in 1v1 fights, bit it still risks immediate death in group combat. I most likely will continue to not use it.
I’m hoping these aren’t the only changes. There are still a number of issues I can see with the usefulness of some of the utility skills. I continue to run Shouts in PvE and Mediations in PvP as I can’t find solid use for any others. I’m also unsure that some of the traits belong in the present positions. Some traits heavily conflict with each other in the same tiers where the two should be supporting. My fingers are crossed for the remaining changes on Tuesday.
Shield 5 isn’t really a buff. Movement is nice, but having a 1.5s channel was already bad. Now they expect having to hold it for 4 seconds to be worthwhile? Even if you don’t have any better skills off cooldown, that’s just begging for an interruption.

Welcome to what we like to call “Tempest”
Unless they changed something I didn’t hear about, just pop the bubble when you don’t need it anymore. It makes the pop mechanic have a much more distinct place in the world.

If you’re going to pop the bubble right away, then you might as well not have it to begin with. This doesn’t solve the problem.
If you popped the bubble, you obviously needed it for something, whether it’s the knock back, projectile defense, out even the heal. But at that point, why would you keep channeling something you no longer need? Are you advocating channeling for 4 seconds regardless of circumstances?
It’s just like shampoo. Apply as necessary, rinse, repeat.

I may not have understood…but longer chanel is much better as long as you can move.
You will be able to absorb projectiles much longer and of course you shoul be able to detonate sooner if needed.
I think you consider that the bubble will come after 4 sec.
I think the bubble will come as quick as now but will last longer.

If it still has the CC effect, imagine the amount of trolling from Bunker Guard in PvP using the shield.
The longer channel time on shield 5 is compensation for the fact that you can move with it, I guess.
It’s an exchange.
But if you play it right you don’t really lose out on anything.
Protect him at all costs.

Hold up, I think I missed something, could some1 please explain to me?
From what I gather, it sounds like we’re getting some sort of trade-off for shield #5. Mobility is the good thing, but 4sc channel time is the bad thing? How is this a tradeoff though, can’t we still detonate the dome early if we wanted to?
The way I see it, this is a double buff to shield #5: Not only is the channel time the FULL 4 seconds like the tooltip said (and we can still detonate immediately if we want to), but we can move while using it. I’m not seeing how there is any sort of trade off or “compensation” involved here, just two straight up buffs.

It confused me too. I kept trying to see if I misread it, because from what I could tell they said “here’s this buff to shield 5, but to compensate for it we’re giving a buff to shield 5.”
Is it something subjective? The longer channel time gives us more choices. We can hold it for additional projectile defense, and pop it whenever we want.
I… only see buff.

Because 4 seconds of channeling is also 4 seconds of not being able to use other skills while channeling. And it’s also a 4 second window of opportunity to be interrupted by any non-projectile attack. It’s great that you get to move around, but it’s not so great that you’ll easily get hit with a 3k Power Block proc followed by a shatter burst.
With a channeling period that long people are still going to use it exclusively for the knockback, and not care about the bubble because it’s just not worth channeling, even while moving.
I’m in the same camp as those who believe this is just a double buff.
I think the main concerning factor is whether or not we can still detonate the bubble. If it is similar to what it originally did where you could detonate at any point, also healing us and any allies in the bubble, then I really don’t understand how this is in any way not a double buff like others have said already.
Also, I’m curious as to why some aren’t happy about the channeling time. On top of everything else shield 5 does I feel like giving us a bubble we can just walk around in would be a little too much. There needs to be some counter play after all. (aside from walk into bubble and melee which would be trickier considering we’re mobile).
Either way, I really like these changes and I hope to use sword shield with DH in the future. Hopefully someone could shed some light on what exactly the skills can and can’t do.
I think people wish it wasn’t a channel at all. Hit 5, bubble comes up and skill flips. No channel so you can activate other skills and not be interrupted. Hit 5 again within 4 seconds, and it triggers the heal.
4 seconds is an eternity for a non-invuln channel. The majority of interrupts in the game are non-projectile as well. The only projectile interrupts I can even think of right now are Ranger longbow knockback and Mesmer pistol stun. You will basically be required to pop SYG everytime you want to fully channel this ability.
Granted, this is no different than the current interrupt situation with Shield 5…it’s just this is our chance to get things right, and it just needs a little more to make it a worthy 5-slot skill.
In other news…Shield 5 + Dragonhunter Shield of Courage virtue (with trait) = 11 total seconds of mobile projectile shield.
I could see this vastly changing the pirate-ship-meta in WvW, with truly frontline shield guardians leading melee pushes.
Mostly centered around shield and SY! Meh.
So how is the 4s channel going to work for shield? Are you going to be making dumb motions for 4s until the bubble comes out? Or is the bubble instant but you have to wait for the other stuff? I don’t mind the later because the knockback/heal is pretty irrelevant anyways and I’d definitely prefer the newer version as long as the shield bubble is instant.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Okay, because there’s way too much confusion going around for some reason.
Shield 4: both pvp and pve get 4s prot, 4s aegis. 1:1 power:damage ratio, 20-16s cd.
Shield 5: 1 knockback on activation. Channel the mobile bubble for 4 seconds absorbing projectiles, but preventing you from using other skills. Pop the bubble at any time to get the heal. 24-20s cd.
This is really the only sensible way to interpret the changes. SoJ I can understand because they fumbled their words, but SoA is pretty straightforward.
Thanks.
That sounds good for Shield 5. As long as I can cancel it any time, it is nice.;

Very happy with the shield changes. There will be a lot more synergy with Aegis traits now just because of the team and self aegis application on 4. Shield 5(SoA) will now be on par with Engi’s Shield 4, better for pushing into fights where there are projectiles flying around. Being interruptible is fine, people seem to forget we have some pretty decent stability access (SYG, IC,), and from the looks of it you don’t have to keep it up for the full 4 seconds meaning you could pop it for a heal.
I’m looking forward to Tuesday, I wonder what they’ve done with Radiant Retaliation and Perfect Inscriptions, if they did do anything with them. Gj anet!

Piratship is made of wells…no projectile blocks gonna help…

Are you aware they are about to commit Dh ?

I’m happy about the fact that I can actually use shield on some of my guardians now. Also DH isn’t as bad anymore with the coming changes. My only real gripe with the specialization now is the poor minor choices and SoJ needing to pulse cripple as well if you have it traited(tether). Traps are another story, though I’ve just accepted it’s what we’re getting.
