5 OH / 2 MH
I think a reason for this is because Phantasms are on off-hands, and Anet wants to give Mesmers a good variety of Phantasms; but don’t want to overload us with weapons.
Still, if the next Elite doesn’t have MH Pistol, folks are gonna riot.

I would love a mid-range power weapon with a decent AA.
It’d also be nice to have a melee two-hander, but a Power-based ranged main-hand is a higher priority for me.

I really hope they add some new weapons to the core classes. It’s going to really suck to have every new weapon locked behind an elite specialization.
I’ve already said but I hope/expect they will remove the restriction and make all weapons and skills accessible to the core class. The only benefit of the elite specs will be the class mechanics, traits that synergies with the weapons/skills and of course a normal traitline.

I have been asking for this since launch….. we can only dream though

I’ve had my Gift of Quip sitting in my bank, waiting until that happens.
So when you mention MH weapons 2h weapons are traditionally included in that statement. So they have 4 MH weapons, two of which are 2h.
tbh im hoping for some sorta Mid Ranged Dagger type thing as our next Elite.
but then again i just have a Dislike for guns as a whole.. i feel they’re kinda boring in animations.

This has been my whole worry with the entire elite spec system. Since only one elite spec can be equipped I feel like further locking of weapons behind elite specs is going to become very annoying.
If they lock the MH pistol behind another elite spec I’m going to be furious that I would have to give up Chronomancer just to be able to use a pistol MH. Never liked that elite specs lock weapons away. Utilities and F-Skill changes ok, but wish that weapons were all made available regardless of elite spec.

nobody physically knows if they will give the proffession anymore Weapons, THe next upgrade to the proffessions might be completely different, i can see repeatively releasing more and more elites would become problematic even if they did allow elites in every slot, as you’d realistically only ever have 3 active elite specializations, and i suspose if they did it this wayu that’d how it work the next one to go in middle tratline and finally 3rd in the first and be locked to those slots.
however given the titling i fidn this unliely, as if u look ur no longer a Mesmer ur a Chronomancer.. well how can u be a Chronomancer AND Another?.. u cant, u simply can only be one of them, so if they added Pistol under another elite u can Expect it to replace chronomancer which tbh is fair enough, u wouldnt use those both anyway by any length of imagination as it’d divide sustain and Zerker up into the two different elites.
I hope they do something different to unlock them tbh this time… something character progression wise and not a HP farm.
hopefully it will be on a Level cap Increase on the Next expansion, which they’ll add Utilities and whatever they do via the skills trees.. just like if u begin the game during 1-80 u max out all the trees to unlock ur regular skills.
I dont think they’ll keep it 80 forever, cause anyone who didnt want to replace chrono just wouldnt pay for the expansion in the SPVP Community, they’ll Need to do something else, a Level cap Raise would make the expansion a Requirement, and imho at this point.. its acceptible for it to be required realistically, every other MMO requires Expansion upgrades to get to top level etc etc. the F2Ps only ment to be trial to learn people into paying anyway and tbh, its likely HoT will join the f2p ranks on the next Expansion release anyway.
My money realistically is on a Revamp of a current Weapon set / Utility set, Every proffession has that 1 Weapon thats Just Completely unused, and tbh refreshing it or replacing it to be better for the proffession would equalize it and Keep something new coming in for the proffessions, I.E replacing Scepter with MH Pistol or Off hand FOcus for Off hand Axe.
i think pistol wont happen personally, they seem to be enjoying altering the way the weapons work for the new stuff, so my bet will be on throwing Daggers or Something, work like dual Pistols but u’ll lob Daggers with one Hand.. or Use telekinisis to throw them.

This was definitely my main sad with shield being added…
Been playing my Necro the last few days and man the Scepter is so great there. Plus the supporting trait is fantastic.
Epidemic is is such a smooth AOE for conditions builds.
Be nice if Mesmer could get the same treatment.
Next MH is a Riffle, because Killshot Mesmer is a thing.
As I understand it, the idea is that it looks weird if you wield a ‘light’ weapon (dagger, pistol) as a main-hand and a ‘heavy’ weapon (sword, axe, mace) as an off-hand. As such, there’s an unwritten rule that every profession is either a ‘heavy weapon profession’ (with access to sword, axe, and mace off-hand) or a ‘light weapon profession’ (with access to dagger and pistol main-hand).
As for our next elite specialisation weapon, I think axes (or possibly hammers) would ultimately fit our gameplay needs better than pistols or rifles (even if the pistols and rifles might seem cooler). The vast majority of our weapons currently are ranged, and while ranged hammers and ranged greatswords are a thing and don’t come across as stupid, I think a primarily-melee rifle is pushing it.
But really, I kind of want to see new weapon types drop as well, and if that happens, we’ll presumably get glaives as a core weapon.

I want a hammer to use entropy…
But yes, one more main-hand, preferably mid-ranged would be good (axe, mace or pistol, but with a preference for axe)
the next one will be long bow.
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".
Know that it has been fun and I love ya all.
I presume (if elite specs continue) we would get axes next because we have a “mists” version with Reaver of the Mists. This would leave harpoons as the only mists weapon we can’t use…. but lol @ harpoons
Victory or Death [VoD] – Yak’s Bend
Again, longbow would just be yet another ranged weapon. We’re not exactly hurting for those, but we do only have two melee weapons, and one of those is spear.
I think we really need either axes or hammers next elite specialisation. Longbow might fit necromancer quite well, now that they’re a bit more balanced between range and melee.
At some point, though, we will be getting our ‘nutcracker’ elite spec, and I could see both rifles and longbows fitting well with that. I don’t think it should be the very next thing on the list, though.

I won’t call Greatsword a ranged weapon until all its abilities are reasonably effective at range.
I won’t call scepter a ranged weapon until its basic attack doesn’t get slower the further you are from your target.
And I won’t call mesmer a melee class until we’re in heavy armor :P
As it is, 2/2 of the mesmer mainhand weapons are only useful up close.
If they fix scepter, I’ll sing a different tune.
Neither weapon has even one skill that’s actually a melee attack, even if they can be more useful up-close.
As for whether we’re a melee class or not, there are far squishier things than mesmer out there that almost specialise in mixing it up in melee.
Umm I’m pretty sure Sword MH has 2 melee attacks….
Umm I’m pretty sure Sword MH has 2 melee attacks….
We were talking about greatsword and scepter.
I think the problem we have with our weapons is that:
- mesmer is always scarier in melee range. GS is the only true ranged weapon, but our burst is a melee burst.
- mesmer has so little AOE/cleave and almost always require a target. Except for the sword cleave, no weapon offers decent AOE abilities. That is why the wells mean so much for us.
Neither weapon has even one skill that’s actually a melee attack, even if they can be more useful up-close.
I said effective. Giving it a range of 1200 is meaningless if it’s too weak at that range to be worth using.

D/D ele? The build that can scrap it up because of eles built-in sustain and because celestial actually works on ele?
Reaper? The build that has a tanking ability (death shroud) built-in to the spec?
Thief? The class that has several times as much stealth access, a new spec built around extreme dodges, and dramatically more engage/disengage mobility than mesmer?
Mesmer is a mid-range champ, and its design doesn’t really permit more than that.
Lastly, your comparison of ranged to melee weapons is flawed at its root. Yes, of our four primary weapons, 3 are technically ranged (my objections aside).
But we’re not talking about primary weapons. We’re talking about mainhand weapons.
Of our two mainhand weapons:
- One is melee.
- One is ranged, but punishes fighting at range.
Furthermore, the “ranged” mainhand weapon interferes with one of our primary builds (phantasm) by overwriting phantasms with clones, making its use a detriment to any build that relies on phantasms (any “ranged” spec by design, as other specs all need to be in close to get the most out of their shatters).
If we’re getting a new mainhand weapon, it needs to fill a need. We don’t need another melee mainhand, that’s what sword is for, but we do need another ranged mainhand—or we need scepter to be fixed.

You were the person who said that heavy armour was needed to melee, not me.

You’re responding to a tangent right now, not to the main thread. When considering what weapon the mesmer should be given next, it doesn’t make sense to ignore half the primary weapons that the mesmer already has. On the other hand, it does make sense to ignore the ‘flaws’ with those weapons, because papering over base class flaws is not the point of elite specialisations.
Unless a future spec locks out off-hand sword (and possibly torch as well), or we get it replaced with off-hand dagger, we aren’t eligible for any more main-hand weapons besides the axe and the mace. So we’re going to have to start getting more two-handers sooner or later.
(edited by evilunderling.9265)
I would be very happy if we got a mainhand Axe next (Astralaria…).
I never liked offhand Pistol so I personally have no love for the mainhand pistol concepts.
In any case, the next weapon surely must be a mainhand.
You were the person who said that heavy armour was needed to melee, not me.
Since we don’t have heavy armor or the mitigation/sustain of those other builds (outside chrono, of course), I’ll go ahead and suggest you’re being pedantic here.

Que? The point of the main thread is specifically to complain about having 5 offhand weapons and only 2 mainhand weapons. It’s right there in the OP. So we’re talking about MH weapons.
It’s the discussion of the next elite specialization that is a tangent, raised in service to the idea of using it to make up for the lack.
On the other hand, it does make sense to ignore the ‘flaws’ with those weapons, because papering over base class flaws is not the point of elite specialisations.
There are two schools of thought on this. One is an idealistic approach that says the best way to do things, the other is a realistic approach that says “this is what we’re probably gonna get, so start advocating for a better version of it now”.
The idealistic view is yours. And as I noted in both my previous posts, fixing scepter would mollify me.
The realistic view looks at Chronomancer and says “well, clearly they’re willing to use the elite specs to fix base class problems. What problems can we fix with the next elite?”
Both are technically correct points of view, with millenia of history behind them.
Unless a future spec locks out off-hand sword (and possibly torch as well), or we get it replaced with off-hand dagger, we aren’t eligible for any more main-hand weapons besides the axe and the mace. So we’re going to have to start getting more two-handers sooner or later.
The idea that you can’t use a smaller mainhand than offhand is:
1. An inference that may or may not be true.
2. Easily subject to change.
We have a ranged greatsword. They can change what they want. Maybe they’ll give us a mainhand focus.
If next elite gives a two-hander, I agree that it should be a melee weapon.
So…hammer?
Mainhand focus! Dual fans and 1 year of confusing Winds of Chaos (staff) with Winds of Chaos (focus).
Joking aside, maybe a 900 range axe would work. I’d be ok with an axe/focus, sw/sw build. Or fix scepter. Just let go of clone on auto and put it on 2or 3.
(I really just wanted to say my joke, but tried to be a little constructive.)
