Freshly dinged 80 - uncertain of build

Hi. I know there are a million builds out there, but I am having a real difficult time thinking of a one for me. My focus is mainly PvE, but maybe with some WvW from time to time. I have used Staff and Sword/Focus most of the time, but was also using Greatsword while leveling. I like Staff/Sword+Focus, but last night in CoF I started thinking about maybe combining Staff/Greatsword. A build which could justify the combination of all three would be nice, but I am not sure if that means I can use all of the weapons-specific traits. I am using my Phantasms most of the time now, which means I am not shattering all that much. Maybe not the wisest choice? Does anyone have a suggestion for a build.?

Also, what gear should I focus on?

Hi there,
Let me get this clear, so you’re looking for a build
- to play mainly in PvE, a bit of WvW
- using Staff/ Sword + Focus or Greatsword/ Sword + Focus
- a Phantasm build

Well, Pyroathesits might have good tips for you. But in the meantime, this is something i just put together quickly, just for your reference. Enjoy

Congrats on 80! You’re now playing an entirely different class than before you reached max level.

Just to touch on the gear aspect of things, I have two sets that never leave my bag: soldiers (pow/vit/tough) and zerker (pow/prec/crit dmg). For dungeon running, most often you can go full glass. There are some instances where I swap out my zerker armor for soldier’s—Fire Shaman in Fractals for example—but it’s not often. I hate swapping trinkets, so they always stay zerker in dungeons.

Before the confusion nerfs, I had a rabid (condi dmg/tough/prec) gear set. Now I pull that only for dueling in WvW. Prismatic Understanding and stacks of torment make most people cry.

Large group play in WvW benefits from the soldier’s gear again, while havoc/roaming play can be a little glassier. I mix knight’s gear with my zerker for that.

It’s a lot to acquire, but make sure to check out the equipment acquisition page to see the least expensive ways of getting gear.
