Q:
Gs build? How exacly?
A:
20/20/0/0/20 (10 points to spare, I put mine in precision for a full 30 pts)
In power line select the GS trait for reduced c/d and increased power
In precision line select clones on dodge
In class line select illusionary elasticity (extra bounce attack)
This build requires a decent crit rate (40% or higher is my recommendation). Don’t go glass cannon and skip out on your other attributes. I use my gear to balance out my stats to 2000 pwr, 1800 prec, 1300 tough, 1200 vit.
This is a powerful build and you can find it in many places throughout the forums.
Alternate weapon sets are completely up to you. A lot of people run with sword/pistol as a second. I use scepter/focus because of focus4 for swiftness and also because I like to remain at range (and scepter is the only 1H range we have).
Utility skills are a personal choice. A good general purpose setup is blink, null-field, feedback, time warp. If you go with a matra build, then 3 mantras plus time warp (skip mantra of pain because it’s rather redundant with the high DPS output of the GS).
Anyway this is all personal preference and opinions. You can find lots of other build input in this forum. There are already a million mesmer greatsword topics already.
Hi all!
I was thinking of going Gs as main weapon, does anyone have any suggestions for builds, and side weapon?Or Should i stay with Staff for main?
i am 20/20/0/0/30 shatter GS spec. The dps is pretty amazing. Using full COF gear (power precision crit mult)
In Domination take Mental Torment and Greatsword Training,
In Dueling i took Deceptive Evasion and the other is a toss up but i use Phantasmal Fury or Desperate Decoy depending
In Illusions take Precise Wrack, Compounding Power, and Illusionary Persona
The biggest thing here is illusionary persona, it will add about 15-20% damage to your shatter at all levels, and you do not need to be close to the target to get it. In fotm ive seen single clone shatters that crit for 8K, and 2 clone where each clone is 4.5k, then with 3 clones its usually about 3.5k each. With the shredding recharge rate bonus wrack is up quite a bit.
For enchants im using 5% crit on weapon, Scholars on gear, and the exotic ruby in all of my jewelry. I do have the Beryl Orichalcum Necklace and my GS is Power/Vit/Crit so those two items seem to give me enough Vitality to not die too easily in PVE. For WVW i swap out a lot of pieces and drop some prec/power for toughness, so my damage isnt as high but its still really nice.
Try it out you will love it!!

Don’t go glass cannon and skip out on your other attributes.
Why would you not go glass canon? Especially at range and with so many ways a mesmer can escape dangerous situations using defensive stats is nothing more then a dps loss imo.

It’s not as good in WvW and PvP imho, but play how you like. These discussions are all opinion based honestly. In PvE there will be times where a bit of extra toughness and vit will save your life and help your team.
GS is kinda junk in PVP right now with the blind nerf and the bug to iZerker that means even when you do get it out it does junk damage. It’s still decent in PVE because your iZerker lasts to the 2nd attack more often and you don’t have to worry about blind much.
Defensive stats are important in any pvp situation. There will always be someone who can get the jump on you (ehhem….theives….ehhem).
Do not be thrown off by the greatsword is bugged comments you see on these forums. GS #3 (beserker) was way OP bugged for months. It has now had a leash put on it but it still performs very well. The developers seemed to panic a bit when the bug was first corrected and openly stated that it was underperforming, but the fact that they have not adjusted its damage, and the fact that most 80 mesmers you see are still using the GS shows that it is still a good weapon.
I use MH Sword and Focus. Focus is our most versatile OH weapon (#4 alone is a speed buff, enemy slow, ranged pull/knock down, ranged interrupt even against boss mobs, combo field light (retaliation on combo finisher blast or leap such as #2 on the MH sword), reflection field, I am sure I am missing something) and the #5 is a powerful phantasm, immobile, but usable in combination with MH #2 that also serves as a reflection sphere for swapping off to a ranged weapon and remaining stationary.
GS, MH Sword, and OH Focus are all based on power specs, so you can direct your gear to enhance the effects of all three without becoming a middle of the road on everything.
As for traits, the mesmer is amazing for having many viable trait lines, and even many situation trait changes with the same spec.
Utilities…soo many to chose from…my advice is never use the same setup for more then a couple hours….soo many great options.
