[Guide/Build] The Zergmower
Ok I need to find some better commanders or zergs then because I do this and almost every zerg I join gets wiped. Surely it’s not because of me!
Join a WvW guild. Get on their comms. As the quality of your approach goes up, so will your level of satisfaction.

Most larger WvW servers will have a server TS that the PUG commander will be on. Try and find that and use it to help with that sort of thing. Additionally as Ross said, if you really intend on just doing a lot of large group fighting you might want to find a WvW guild to run with.
Updated this guide with a specific build that I’ve been having a lot of success with lately, as well as a specific build link and utility skill recommendations.
Seems like a really interesting concept and I’d like to try it..but question:
Considering that the only glamour you’ve got slotted is veil, is it really worth devoting two glam related traits to? I know that you could (and probably do) swap it out periodically for other glam utilities, but in my case I have to have veil on my bar pretty much all the time.
With the lack of condition removal in mind as well, I wonder about giving up CE or Glam mastery for traited torch or mender’s purity.
And what were your thoughts on torch vs focus (traited or not)? I love focus..but typically only when I’m traited for reflection too.

I’m definitely considering dropping confusing enchantments. That being said, veil still is a glamour of course, and you can use it offensively. It’s exceedingly rare to use veil after the initiation of a fight, so once it comes back up you can go ahead and use it as any glamour for confusion spreading.
Condition removal really isn’t an issue. As long as you have an organized group composition, you’ll have enough removal from warriors/guardians to be fine.
I haven’t yet experimented with torch much. Temporal curtain really is just an incredible skill, great for aoe cripple and pull, yanking people off of walls and ledges, just overall control. While it is better if traited, it’s still a strong untraited weapon.
Now, torch gives some nice aoe damage and burning for sure, so I’ll definitely experiment with it soon.
I run scepter/focus for my main, and sword/torch for my offhand.
What sword/torch provides is an easy way to run around and tag during “clean up” when all the opponents are down and dropping, but otherwise the torch provides that target dropping should you find yourself being focused, or out alone behind enemy lines (not really a problem when commanding as you are the front line). I don’t take the torch for condi removal. Not only is it not needed, but it’s not really enough on it’s own if conditions are really a concern for you. The stealth and target dropping are really what’s going to save your kitten, not the condi clear.
Thank you for this build Pyro! I have been running this and love it. I did make one change and that was to take the 10 points out of Confusing Enhancements and put them in Warden’s Feedback. Other than that I am using the same armor and runes. Great build where I can “mow” through the enemy’s zerg!
Pyro. You’ve been replying to a lot of my threads about trying to find a build I like, and someone mentioned this one as a good Condition Damage WvW one. I read through it, and while I didn’t really understand it at first… after sitting here reading and researching, this sounds like an AMAZINGLY fun build. However, I also really like a Suicide Clone style build… so I decided to try and merge them.
Here’s what I came up with:
It’s got the same premise, with the added bonus that you can play in the middle of the Zerg (after Mimic is on CD) and spread AOE Bleeds/Vuln/Confusion with clone spam tactics. I know the clone generation isn’t as quick as a “spam” build, due to no reduced cooldowns, but with Scepters auto attack, Dodge clones and the staffs generally low CD on Phase Retreat anyways… I think it sounds viable.
Any thoughts? Does the build still work in similar fashion? What’s the general “rotation” when WvW’ing?
Cheers. I like fresh builds I’ve never played the style of.

You’ll lose the tagging ability of glamors, not to mention the damage the reflects from feedback dishes out.
One thing I HATE about mesmer is our kitten poor ability to tag. Even playing the zergmower and the like, when I compare it to an ele I’m ready to hurl the game into the sun. A well placed glamor can at least tag the enemy zerg, and on the whole will dish out more damage than what you’re wanting to do.

Yeah, as Ross said, you are losing glamour confusions.
I’ve tried doing clone-deaths in zergs. It works okish, but the main issue that I kept running into was that it just didn’t actually tag things. You’ve got a tiny amount of aoe confusion and then a random chance to apply bleed, 1 in 3. That’s not a lot of reliable damage. On top of that, I found that you simply can’t supply enough clones to actually make it work. Even dodging and spamming clone skills like mad, you’re only going to get one or 2 clones every 5 seconds or so. That’s really not a whole lot considering how many people are often in a zerg, and how much condition cleansing is rolling around.
The reason the burns work for tagging is that it’s a high intensity condition, so even 1 tick counts. A couple stacks of bleed…not so much. A couple stacks of vuln or weakness…not at all.
Hmm… I wanna try something like this then maybe, which is basically the build posted on your first post with a slight modification in weapon/1-2 traits…
I really don’t know how I’m going to get used to not having Clones on Dodge though, haha.
How’s that look?

Yeah, that’s definitely workable.
As far as clone on dodge goes…you won’t miss it. Not in a zerg. It really does almost nothing when zerging because of the sheer amount of aoe pressure you’ll have. Since this build takes you up right at the frontline, nothing you spawn will survive more than a fraction of a second.

For a dedicated Mesmer player, switching from general mesmer play to zerging is a huge change, and here’s why. Mesmer IS a dueling class, and we’re right at home kiting. As a Mesmer we’re rarely in the thick of it except for some sort of tactical strike before blinking to safety. For zerg play, if you think about those who’re most at home during it it’s your warriors and guardians. But really they’re no more “safe” than anybody else solidly wading into the thick of danger. What makes the melee train zerg tactic so good is the combined efforts of the whole. While as a typical mesmer you’re going to be relying wholy on your clones, stealths, and shatters to maintain yourself, in a zerg you’ve got to give those up and instead rely on your commander for direction, allies for damage mitigation (aoe cap + boon support), group condi cleanse, and rallying heals. It’s very foreign to mesmer, but very doable under the build.

Getting good footage of it is rather difficult for me. My frame rate already suffers in large fights, and fraps makes it drop dangerously low. I’ll see what I can do though.
Thought I’d post my slight variant that I’ve been trying out for this build Pyro. Same basic idea with a few personal tweaks to suit my playstyle.
I lose a few seconds on my utility CD’s but… worth it for what I get back / how I like to play I think. Mostly WvW.

I suffer the same problem as pyro with fps, but regardless I went and made some clips anyway. Ive had great engagements, and terrible engagements. These are somewhere in between those spectrums.

Have to get that fps issue fixed.

So many solutions, so little cash.
