My greatest annoyance is simply the fact that we are the slowest class to get from point A to point B. I don’t care if we get a signet or just a longer swiftness. All I know is that to get around, while leveling or in WvW, we are the slowest.
We have the best combat mobility, I agree with that. We have a great survivability in our escaping from bad situations. I’m not talking about combat, I’m not talking about chasing down a runner or running ourselves. I’m talking about exploring the world or going for map completion, or trying to get to that event before it ends. We are the worst class at getting there.
The ONLY way for us to get some movement speed is to give up all 6 of our armor rune slots OR use a weapon that is arguably substandard. That’s a much greater price to pay than the single utility slot (easily switchable when not traveling the world, and FREE), or some traiting that gives us some bonuses alongside the movement trait.
I don’t know why we have to pay such a great cost when no one else has to.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: guardians have it worse.

Guardians have either a 2-handed weapon that is not particularly useful when you aren’t traveling with a group (and if you’re traveling with a group, you don’t have to worry about out-of-combat movement boosts because the group will give those to you), or a utility slot that grants swiftness for 20 seconds when activated, on a 60 second cooldown (so, 33% swiftness at the cost of one of your utility slots being completely unusable if anyone hits you while you’re traveling). They can trait to make one of these more effective, but traiting for both doesn’t make for a good build, and they have no traits that boost speed without using one of these two options.

I use focus in my main build and tc got a 20 sec cooldown and the swift last 16 sec on me.

I really don’t understand why people are arguing about a mesmers lack of speed if you play one to any extend you will know exactly why people including myself want to see better out of combat swiftness.

If you say you don’t have an issue with it then I don’t think you played WvW enough or you are happy with sub-par runes or are happy using a build using a focus specifically… Or just like being slow O.o

Sure we have great combat skills and even ignoring the fact that people can stealth/charge run away from you denying a kill (You still won’t be able to keep up so you get to watch your enemy laugh at you while kicking the dust in your face).

It’s when you’re trying to get from point A to B that it becomes a real hair pulling experience. Any mesmer not using a focus or runes in WvW will know exactly how painful it is. To use combat mobility as an excuse is not helpful to the actual problem.

As for people stating about guardians having it worse… Please read my previous post.

How about we simply allow a 25% passive run buff in PVE only and when we enter a PVP area it doesn’t work… Would that all make you people happy?

I am sick and tired of the people saying how well our mobility is when it is NOT. We are the ONLY class that has to give up stats and a weapon choice just to attain an semblence of 33% run speed for any decent amount of time.

I agree with you, To be honest I rather see all swiftness be equal in WvW at the very least. Just give everyone a 25% out of combat swiftness buff in WvW that doesn’t stack with the passive sigils of other professions. That way everyone is on more equal footing in regards to getting about the WvW maps.

Currently it’s balanced badly specifically for Mesmers and Guardians. Mesmers especially…

I have no issues with the swiftness in combat as such I just don’t want to be crawling around the map trying to get to the various battles when other professions can have great swiftness.

Even guardians have ‘Retreat’, On my guardian it lasts 27 seconds and Symbol of swiftness for 11 seconds (Granted I’m specced for ‘healing’ but even the base swiftness is superior to that of a mesmers).

My first level 80 was a guardian and the uptime on the swiftness was much less frustrating. Someone already posted here, but Guardians have higher base AND traited swiftness uptime, so mesmer really IS the slowest profession in the game. Additionally, staff helps assist with the reason I want more movement speed- AOE tagging. I just want more movement speed to explore the world more and get to events for Exp/Kharma/money.
Additionally, that brings up a good point in that most other professions have multiple ways to get more movement speed in the profession itself. Mesmers have only one reliable way and that’s with a focus.

I personally don’t think portal is too strong. It’s perfect the way it is now. It’s one of the few useful skills mesmers have when running with a zerg that really makes any significant difference to a fight.

We are completely useless when it comes to taking a keep since we only have a couple of abilities that can hit people on walls (Unless they are stupid enough to stand too close to the edge). Other than timewarp on golems. But since that it’s an Elite skill with a big cooldown we’re basically just standing around on look out for incoming enemies etc. Majority of the time.

Portal and stealth is great for zerg on zerg action so I don’t think it’s overpowered. If you don’t keep an eye out for portal bombs it’s your own mistake. Portals are very obvious and bright. Easy to see. As long as you always anticipate a portal bomb you can take steps to prevent it from succeeding.

The only problems with portal at the moment are to do with culling issues and it’s hard to distinguish an enemy portal from an ally one.

I agree with you guys, I completely lack the power to understand the argument against the necessity of a speed buff! Really, at the very least for PvE and WvW we NEED a constant source of 25% speed. Those people who do not like it or like to use those hideous sub-par runes for hell knows what, are free to do so even after such options given to the rest of us. It is really this simple, we need to be given a source of constant speed like all other classes have.

Catching theif? yh that’s quite possible with stun, blink and iZerker. I got them many times with that tactic. Getting away? if your portal is gone, prepare to get kitten it’s a matter of time before those guys catch you.

while not the best option, if all you’re doing is map clearing, you could use the speed boost in gem store, eat salads, and kill the white-named foes (one hit kills) for speed boosts while carrying SoI and a focus.

It is frustrating to move as slowly as we do outside of combat, but we’ve got a lot going for the class so I suppose I can see why Anet thinks that tortoise-like moving mesmers are fine.

I just wish that Anet would give all us mesmers a free mini-pet to keep us company while everyone else takes off far ahead.

Yea I ended up getting the runes myself because I’m so sick of being so slow it’s FAR from ideal. But it’s amazing with Healing Mantra x3 Domination trait line. You get 10 seconds of swiftness with 5 seconds of downtime in between. They really have to make either better runes or give us a better swiftness utility.

The cooldown on centaur runes is 15 seconds, even though it says 10 seconds in yet another inaccurate tooltip. Mantra heal is overkill if all you want is get the most out of the runes, mirror heal does the same job.

We do have ways of gearing for perma swiftness yes, and that is the whole point many reasonable people try to get across:

I actually would like to see some changes to our swiftness uptime. I really dislike our random boon signet (can’t even remember the name at the moment) as it is extremely inconsistent. I think that both Mesmers and Engineers should get some type of compensation in this regard. Heck, even Warriors have 100% swiftness uptime…

I thought we dealt with being slow by dropping portal>press f to use portal land in front of the enemy> do sword 2>f1 they all die we wait around for them to run back to us.

Maybe I am running an old build of the game(will run repair) but I swear that is what everyone QQs about.

That’s what I thought as well till I tested it. You get 10 seconds swiftness when you use a heal. then after 5 seconds you can use it again by triggering ‘Power Return’ on readied Mantra of Recovery as well as when finished casting the mantra.(I have the 3x mantra trait so that’s 3x swiftness + the charge up).

It doesn’t trigger on other mantras using the ‘Restorative Mantra’ trait though.

So what the wiki actually means is that the cooldown starts as soon as you trigger the swiftness buff (I didn’t look at the tooltip I got the info for this on the Wiki as I was going over the available swiftness runes).

I wish I still had my Centaur Runes, I was sold on the hype of Air Runes, but the speed difference is huge (yes I understand the trade off for more dmg). Now I carry sword/focus set just to make up the difference…

Its really annoying to often fall behind or not catch up as fast as those around simply because the traits/skills for mesmer are lacking in this regard.

It would be one thing if there were few professions that are exceptionally fast and the majority is slow, then it would be the advantage of those few professions over the rest..But as it is all other professions are fast and mesmer as the only one isnt, so its a disadvantage compared to the rest. Relative disadvantages in something that matters alor for teams staying together, mobility of the group and so on arent something I really care for. I’d rather have standouts like thief/ranger/elementalist being fast and the rest slow, or everyone fast.

Consider that the guardian staff has a lot of other good uses compared to the mesmer focus, and I’d say the Guardian is better than us for swiftness.

This is such a false statement though, Guardian staff isn’t bad. . . but I’d much rather have Sword/Focus on Mesmer > Guardian staff any day. The Focus is such a versatile offhand that having played with it for a few weeks now and really tried it I would definitely rate it over just about any other weapon you can have on a Mesmer, even without traiting for it. A pull effect on a 25 sec CD is lower than what most other professions get for knockback effects coupled with a built in combo to remove conditions on it with Warden + Curtain. Warden is so useful for area denial and repositioning when setting up burst or just pulling them into the Warden locking ’em in place with Sword 3 and then BF their face! Guardian Staff feels lackluster and clunky with slow animations (except auto attack) and weak support.

Now about handling being slow. . . easiest solution I came up with was to drop 30 points in Chaos for Prismatic Understanding and Boon Duration, run Focus all the time and have Blink on my bar. I pretty much never fall behind a zerg, I can catch just about anything that is still in combat running away (sometimes a thief will get away, most times I catch ‘em, same for Eles). I have 15.5 sec out of every 25 sec of swiftness from Focus (62% Swiftness Uptime) and can blink between every other Curtain as needed to catch up, and often pick up a swiftness buff from someone else. Never bothers me in WvW. I run a slightly wonky build I know, but I have great results thus far so I’m not too concerned.

If portal is dictating ANet’s approach to balancing mesmers, then remove it. It’s not fair to our class to be balanced around a single skill.

I don’t know this to be true, but what other reason to not give us 25% passive. We are a mobile class after all. Wierd to have a class uber mobile in combat, but then gimp them when simply walking across the terrain.

My main is a Ranger and we now have a perma 25% run buff, my other is a Necro and the same thing (both were leveled before that patch)….

It seems EVERY SINGLE CLASS has a way to stay at 25% – 33% 90-100% of the time EXCEPT Mesmer…

How do you all deal with that? As is you are FORCED to use a focus and use a worthless trait that has NO secondary passive or functional skill like so many other classes as well.

It is just so nice to be able to get from point A to point B & C fast and without having to gimp myself because I am FORCED to use a specific offhand.

I can only imagine what you all go through in WvW or Pvp being unable to get away or catch anyone who wants to leave.

So I ask again how do you all deal with being the slowest class in the game?

Second slowest.

Guardian has to take an awkwardly-built 2-handed weapon, a trait, and a utility slot just to get 66% swiftness uptime. They have no other movement speed increases, no viable non-melee attack options, and no reliable skills to teleport, self-launch, or otherwise get away from enemies. Mesmers at least have blink.

Yes yes Guardian can tank to an extent, but if everyone except you is running away and you can’t follow them, you’re gonna die.

This isn’t to say mesmers don’t have it rough in the movement department, but it could be worse.

What? Guardians have:

1. Retreat
2. Save yourselves
3. Staff 3 ability
4. Judgement Intervention ( Burn Teleport)
5. Sword 2 ability ( Teleport with blind)
6. Greatsword Leap

We are the most mobile melee class(Guardians) with exception to perhaps thieves.

As someone who has lvl 80 guardian, necro, and now mesmer – I have to agree movement speed out of combat is just bad. I thought my guardian was slow but now I see that I have more options for swiftness and more synnergy when I use swiftness skills with several guardian builds. This is not the case for mesmer. This does not promote grouping with others since in many cases players will not change their build and playstyle just to make you run faster.
The solutions that I have tried (that will not change my build that I enjoy) are gem store speed booster – however those are pricey. I also make candy corn ice cream, which is only 5% boost and annoyingly goes away if I get downed or enter new zone.
The problem with mesmer movement speed is lack of COMFORT especially when grouped with other “fast classes”. Switching weapons, armor etc is busy work and should not be part of the game esp. when they lack synnergy with how class is played by majority of players (its like saying (hypothetical example)“well drinking a glass of nectar juice every 40 sec for health regen is not a big deal” – yes its not… but why?…. it add busy work, not necessary)
Now, I am not suggesting 25% speed boost, but the root of the problem is LARGE GAP in movement speed between classes. This is a problem in groups esp. randoms. There are many ways to go about dealing with this issue and I hope something is changed since as it is right now – I cant see this being good for grouping.

I only run with builds that use a focus. Luckily a lot of them can fit a focus in.

We’ve become such an ADD culture that people can’t stand to play a profession simply because it travels slower than others…

Agreed.and its only 3 classes that have a perma 25% speed signet, not everyone and their mother

I have no issue with the ‘slowness’ in most of the game except for WvW where we are the only profession that significantly lags behind.

Actually it’s four (necro, ranger, thief, ele). Warrior has traits which boost movement speed. Engineer has perma-swiftess trait for 10-pts in the class trait-line. That leaves guardian and mesmer.

Nothing to do with ADD, it’s a “quality of life” feature.

You experience this the most in WvW roaming zergs. If you don’t WvW, then hey you probably don’t belong in this conversation — because you’re already happy with the status-quo.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”
