PU roaming builds
~ There is no balance team. ~
I would like to answer to OP (Fermi) but I waited so long because I shared his same doubts and I wanted to play a couple of weeks before adding my opinion here.
I’m an average or below average player skill-wise and I still try to learn the nuances of this game so I think my point of view may be interesting for other players who have a limited playing time.
Anyway, based on my noob experience I completely agree with Pyro, if you plan to be a lone roamer, a PU condition build (kind of the one Pyro posted here) it’s the best way to go.
It gives you a better chances to survive 1v2 (I don’t even dare to fight 1 v3…) because it’s not hard to keep producing clones and you have very good defense with scepter/torch and staff.
When I run a phantasm or hybrid PU I’m better 1v1 but I die pretty quick when I face a couple of enemies at once and if they are vaguely skilled they kill my phantasms in a hurry.
One important note, I used Undead runes for my condi build and Privateer for my power/hybrid because I couldn’t afford Perplexity/Traveler’s.
In conclusion, I settled for a Blackwater PU condi build but don’t assume that you are going to faceroll your enemies, you are still going to die a lot 1v2 if you are not a good player but you usually have long enough fights to have fun
Oh goodness, seems I upset a couple people since I last checked. I love how defensive people get when a simple no one like me states my opinion on the PU build.
By all means, use the build. Why should one care what I think? Everything you state is correct of course, it’s more challenging to play other specs when roaming. That is why, in my opinion, those mesmers are simply better than the PU ones.
The fact that one instantly jumps to “Go do a 1v4 with a thief” is silly. Because the only way a build should be deemed viable is if you’re able to roll around like a buffoon and still survive 4 people fighting you? Thank goodness you use a build that doesn’t require you to actually think right? This is why no one likes warriors, and why they are considered ‘easy mode’. That’s all I’m saying, that PU has lowered mesmers to a dumbed-down state, and that’s saddening to see.
That’s it. Just an opinion, nothing more. I don’t wish to derail the thread anymore than I already have.

Hm, lets see.
Everyone runs PU because they can’t play mesmer without using a build that carries them.
I’m sorry you feel the need to express wrong opinions. However, since you’ve expressed wrong opinions, it falls to the rest of us that aren’t wrong to point that out to people who might not know better.

While I respect your opinion here’s mine.
I will agree that “PU” builds are more forgiving than other builds, however it doesn’t necessarily mean “easymode”. There’s is skill involved in execution and timing of skills, so yes you DO have to Think. Prismatic Understanding is just 1 trait and just because a build uses it doesn’t mean it’s cheese. There are TONS of different builds and play-styles that use this trait. Contrary to what you say there are builds out there that actually use this trait offensively to engage targets and get in their face. Something tells me you may have had a bad experience with a PU mesmer, or perhaps are just a build snob that thinks because you use a more “difficult” build means you’re an amazingly better player. So when someone comes to the Mesmer forums asking about PU roaming builds there’s no need to talk down on it just because YOU think it’s a crutch because it’s not. Traits don’t win fights players do chief

Oh why do all mesmer’s want to go PU as a long time mesmer i hate PU builds its one reason i find it hard to get a fight one on one in WvW and if i do and win i get messages like oh a PU mesmer how original well i never have or will run PU far better builds out there.
Everyone runs PU because they can’t play mesmer without using a build that carries them.
I’m sorry, I meant it’s because “PU is what’s viable and because it’s the only way a mesmer can roam effectively”.
Something along those lines I’ve been told.
Heh… seen almost this exact post in the Thief forum talking about the stealth trait line in similar context.
Everyone runs PU because they can’t play mesmer without using a build that carries them.
It seems you’re more frustrated with the actual concept, annoyed with that specific trait or sick of having to deal with stealth in general. Does your opinion apply to other professions? If you come across a build you’re having a hard time with, does that mean the build is carrying that player? Is someone suppose to play a squashy build, so you feel like you have the upper hand? Interesting cognition process you have.

You should pay more attention to the Mesmer forums, and why there’s so much frustration from those players, especially the concerns with bugs and being ignored. I’m sure other profession forums are the same way, depending on what the situation might be.

Tilah Nailed it, you should be supporting you fellow mesmers especially with all of the recent nerfs. Why do you think it’s called World versus World? Nobody likes loosing and believe me all the other players no matter what class will be looking for any edge they can get to win. To bash a trait that gives a light armor class more sustain / survivability in a world filled with Bust and Condition builds is silly. I don’t know about you, but I want my fellow Mesmers to succeed by ANY means necessary regardless of what build or traits they use.

That’s what I was trying to point out. Everyone, whatever they’re playing, will look for an advantage to win. It’s the whole point of having a great build. I’m sure Osicat would agree.
