Power or Condi?
IMO, Power.

in the video description, there are all three builds that the video creator uses.
Shatter, Phantasm, and condition builds.
Shatter and Phantasm are viable with Power, while condition has a tad bit less build diversity, although the recent patch has made hybrid condi-shatter builds a bit more viable.
pve = power
pvp/wvw = whatever you like
PvE = Power
PvP = Either can be effective
WvW = no clue!

For WvW, you can go Power or Condi, each one is suited to different situations.
The most common image of the mesmer, is the portal and veilbot, and this is a really limited perspective to have on the class, because that’s a utility which teams can take advantage of, but not a role in the zerg per-se.
Condition mesmers are very strong while roaming alone or with small groups of players (up to 10) The main thing that sets condition mesmers apart is that they use their stealth and positioning to allow their conditions time to work on their enemies. while keeping up constant pressure with phantasms. Those Kittens.
Their shortcoming is that when the battle scales up(20v20 or higher), your conditions do not stay on your targets long enough to do damage, due to the DoT nature of conditions.
Power mesmers in WvW are very different.
In WvW, mesmers offer very impressive spike damage, either through phantasm or shatter. here’s a video that shows such impressive spike damage!

They are also excellent at forcing enemy players out of position, through immobilizes, and other CC. This means that they quite nicely fit into the role of a ganker, and they are able to fill a crucial role in the zerg, which is pulling enemy casters out of the enemy zerg and bursting them. We’re able to do this extremely well if you work in conjunction with a thief, or axe/shield warrior.
If you’re interested in playing a gank role for your server zergs, pair yourself up with a teef (suggest he run venomshare to get that immobilize venom, cause it’s silly, but not otherwise important) and run a build something like this:
Remember, this build is intended to be working in conjunction with another ganker who has access to cc and immob. Lock em down and blow em up.

Looking at the entire game I’d always say Power.
Why?
- In PvP, it really doesn’t matter what you “go for with your char”, as gear is separate and freely picked. Check whatever is missing in your team and pick that role, if it uses power then gear for that, if it uses condi then gear for that. If it uses healing power… well we don’t really have that but you know, then go for that.
- In WvW and PvE, roughly half the contexts are fine either way. The other half favour power. Assuming you don’t want to constantly lug around multiple gear sets, you can skip a lot of headaches by simply going for power.
- There’s a single situation which favours condi to a significant degree (1v1 roaming). However, from a perspective of playing to win, this is a situation you will want to avoid. 1v1 fights take long and provide virtually no benefit, especially since our condi specs lack stopping power necessary to snipe enemy reinforcements. Even then, so many other situations favour power, it’s not useful to gear for this specific situation.
The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

But no one would ever call me best mes or best anything in the game for that matter. Maybe best lama face irl, idk.

I’d say power. Condi is all well and good but the zerker you are fighting is going to kill you before it ticks enough to do much. ANET has encouraged zerk builds to the extent that other play styles are marginal on survival.

Wait wait wait, are you saying a condi mes can’t outlast a zerker anything else?
No.. I’m generalizing that in my experience zerk can overcome bunker or stealth much of the time. Before you shatter on me… I admit not being an awesome PU mesmer.

In my experience a good anything can overcome a good anything else. And when you have two good this or thats going at it, it’s anyones game.
As for PU, it makes a strong condi mesmer. But it’s far from necessary.
Oh, and bunker. Might be great for holding a spvp point. But otherwise they’re either surviving to no effect, or dieing a slow painful death.
pssst you just contradicted yourself. If a good anything can overcome a good anything else, then why disparage bunker as essentially useless?.. Are you saying there’s no such thing as a “good” bunker Mesmer player? You ought to think through your responses.
Truthfully, I’m sick and tired of people telling me that a “good” player can do the impossible. Now perhaps there’s a faction of Mesmers that are so highly skilled that all balance issues are overcome with a wave of their hand and a “simple” dodge.
Those people need to come off the ivory tower and realize that their lovely theories mean very little if they can’t be applied in actual play.
No I don’t honestly believe that condi is a viable course for a squishy Mesmer. I don’t think so because many opponents will be zerk and therefore have enough burst to quickly destroy the Mesmer and whatever condi they generate.

I’m just going to say real quick, get yourself 1 full set of Rabid weapons/armor/trinkets, and 1 full set of zerk weapons/armor/trinkets, and you have everything you need for any/all condi, hybrid, and zerker mesmer builds across all game modes.
The exception being if you want to command in a zerg, in which case you can add 1 more set of your favorite ultimate survival gear.
PvE condi is totally viable aslong as it is for solo vs champ.

My point from above exactly. Condi is always “for this” or “works here”.
Power is “Best here” or “Difficult here”. But it’s not useless anywhere, so you might as well go with what works 100% of the time instead of 25% of the time even if better in those.
