Would a clone-generating melee weapon be OP?
scepter 1 already creates clones as the last step of a 3 skill chain, i dont see why a melee weapon couldnt have a similar mechanic.
Really depends on how much damage the auto-attack chain would do. I can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t work but then we do already have this mechanic in place with the sceptre, I personally would rather a new melee weapon have new/different mechanics.
I’m not sure about clones but I love the idea of a dagger mesmer. If we don’t get main hand pistol I vote daggers all the way.
While we’re at it, raise the illusion cap to 8 and give the clones this clone generation abillity, too

i would much rather see clones and phantasms separated for our shatter/illusion count then just a straight spam and cap increase.
Everyone already want the clone generation on the scepter gone because it sucks. Not all builds are based on clone generation and having them pop up in an auto-attack chain is bad weapon design.
Not sure why on earth you’d want it on melee weapon auto-attack chain. It would be just as bad. What’s the other 2 skills of the dagger supposed to do (assuming main hand)? Squirt butterflies around the mesmer? No, that is where your clone generator should be. Such as skill 2 popping a clone while dodging around the target at the same time (ranger style) while 3 toss the dagger and create a backstabbing phantasm (downed mesmer style).
