any tips for new mesmer?
All weapons seem to be good depending on your playstyle. I recommend trying them all.
As far as crafting, weaponsmithing and artifice can make all your weapons, tailor and jewelry for the “armor”, cook for food.
I personally enjoy FINDING new loot, so crafting my own equipment takes the fun out. For this reason, I went jewel/cook.. but any of them can be useful.
Greatsword with a Staff Switch for AOE has been pretty enjoyable for me so far…
I use all the weapons depends on the situation but with my current build I have the greatsword as a staple with usually sword/focus behind it. The crafting I chose is jewls and tailor, so far jewler has been very easy and rewarding to level while tailoring on the other hand not so much as the scraps are scarce RNG kittene.
ok, so lets say i go GS + Staff do i just equip staff as Main and switch to GS if targets gets close?
I’d do the opposite and pull with the GS then switch to Staff and drop a Chaos Storm on yourself and the mob and proceed from there.
all you need is a staff. after that, dealers choice
^pretty much that. I swap to scepter/torch and back when I’m dealing with multiple mobs, but the staff does everything I want for most fights.
I’m also baffled as to why people have issues in PvE with this class. I take on multiples above my level, even as high as +7 depending on the mob, without much issue. And that’s using what’s going to be a glamour build, but is far from ready for that being only level 37 as of this evening. Just gotta use those fields, blinds, illusions and dodges. And Chaos Storm is a defensive tool. Drop it on yourself AND the mob. Don’t use it as a standard AE unless you’re defending/attacking a keep in WvW and that’s just to get people to move and maybe get some confusing bolts from your allies.
I’ve been using staff/sword-pistol in PVE-main map mostly. I switch out the sword-pistol in dungeons and near bosses generally though to a scepter combo or gsword… I find being ranged in those scenarios provides me with more survivability o.o
This is, IMO, the only class where every weapon is viable… and if it isn’t totally viable, it’s still really fun. My advice is just to experiment with each one and find what’s most enjoyable for you. Personally, I find myself using sword/pistol and sword/torch way more than anyone ever should, simply because it’s fun.

I kind of dislike scepter though – it just feels slow. The third ability is amazing, it’s just I don’t care for the other two – especially the first, since it’s really slow and the clones are basically useless except kittenter ammo (The DOWNED clone is better – it inflicts confusion at least)

The only thing I can say in favor of scepter really is that our off-hand choices generally make up for the lameness of the first two skills (which I feel are fine in PVE, at least, but are pretty much crap otherwise.) But yeah… I totally prefer running sword and then a 2-hander, or just both 2-handers situationally.

No don’t go GS if the target is close, the damage from the GS is best at longer range. GS is a good Kiting weapon but it is a bit counter intuitive to have a greatsword be a ranged weapon..
