Nah they really dont. They only do ok damage but have really great utility. However with reflects they can potentially outdps the whole group.
I have or have played a zerker exotics + ascended of every class and I would disagree with that statement.

War, guardian, ele, thief and engi can do more damage than a mesmer. I feel my necro does more or less equal damage (not too sure). Dont know about ranger, i assume less.
Mesmers themselves don’t have THAT high damage, but unlike Necromancer Minions the clones and Phantasms scale with the Mesmer’s stats.

However (unless I’m mistaken?) their Phantasms can actually out-damage the Mesmer who summoned them.

The phantasms do out damage the mesmer, but even so the overall damage is still beaten by the classes i listed above with proper dps specs. Mesmer is good because of utility and reflects and being able to boost the groups dps by doubling might and increasing boon duration. The mesmers themselves are not good for dps. The reason mesmers are less important in high level fractals is because they are very bad for killing large groups of trash.
Necro will slow down a dungeon group no matter what.
Would i have choosen another class if i knew the state of the necro ? yes but stuff were said about necro giving false hope.You can hope for the trait patch coming soonish and stick with your necro og go with mesmer if you wanna help your group the best.
You don’t know how to play your class properly, then, if you claim that necromancers always slow down dungeon groups. I’ve saved teammates multiple times through throwing down wells for protection, blood wells, going into Plague… I don’t even need to say. By doing that, I’ve technically sped up the run as people can’t DPS anything while downed. Power necro also certainly isn’t going to slow things down, either, if you’re good at surviving.
The thing about Necromancers being given false hope is true, though.

I think the issue is that for a group of sufficient skill and power, support / control things like well of blood, protection, blindspam are simply unnecessary. I don’t really blame Necromancers or their design for this, I just think it’s a combination of PvE mechanics never really requiring these things and players getting good enough to succeed without them.
We’ll see about power necros. But I highly suspect the numbers just aren’t there.

On the bright side, DPS warriors (and I actually mean GS warriors) just got kicked in the junk – nobody will have to try and compete with that anymore after Tuesday. That levels the field a bit and I’ve always found my wells-DPS necro does nasty damage even before they planned to shorten well cooldowns across the board.

Yeah, I can see that happening, to be fair. Most groups are good enough to just dodge out of things… but I suppose it helps to be kittenproof.
If you check out Nemesis’ glass cannon build, he deals 6k crit in Death Shroud. That’s not bad at all, considering it’s multiple target.
