Necromancer in Raids/PvP/etc.
http://qtfy.eu/build/necromancer
Thats right there is one of the currently possible meta chooses for a necro in raids.
I do think a good conditioner necro is still very much usable in raids yeah. “Signet of Vampirism” skill, for example, is a sweet healing skills that every people in the party can heal from.
For pvp I honestly have no clue mister.
Necro WVW:They do loads of dmg if you have the right skill and right gear and right runes.
Necro in Spvp(structured pvp) They can do good damage so long as nobody focuses you.Certain classes will destroy you and i mean DESTROY you, like:Rangers warriors and guardians.Mesmers are pretty tough to beat if you don’t know how to counter them. The reason is:all these classes have better survivability than you and lots of ccs to keep you down and op burst, especially warriors and guardians.Other classes can be beat.If you are smart you can even beat guardians if they mess up, but be careful and don’t under estimate them. Also:Necro is a condi class, and every class and his mother can remove your condis fairly easily, making your damage negligable if you don’t keep an eye out for the cds.Its doable over all but it takes a lot of practice, and can get frustrating.Sometimes you feel like a live lord, other times you repeatedly die due to being focused on 24/7 and you have trouble keeping your health up.
If you are free to play, you will especially suffer due to pvp working mostly around elite skills, as they add dmg and cc and other stuff.Traditional condi necro can be viable, but necros aren’t the best solo queue class.I’d recommend queuing with a friend and practicing to get good.
Raiding: no one wants a necro because the damage is lowest in the game and it has been this way since the launch of the game. DPS might be slightly better than Mesmer, but Mesmer brings a lot of boons to buff every else. Because of that, Mesmers are almost a must in most raid comps. Necro is basically just dps, but really low dps and no useful utility or boons. Sure you can run raids with a guild, but they would probably prefer you reroll a difference class to raid with when you get to the harder stuff.
PvP: WvW, necros own, but only if you spec into using Epidemic because its pretty much broken in that mode. Its been broken for a long time. The assumption is they will nerf it eventually, but people have been saying that for a while and it hasn’t come yet so who knows. In ranked, its possible for necros to be very good, but it requires a team to built around you and you have to be a fully coordinated team. By yourself in solo queue, you might feel like a fish out of water, especially if you are trying to a GS Reaper build. You have no escape options and you will rarely be in range to ever hit anyone.
As for Fractals and normal dungeons, any class is mostly fine as you basically just spam aoe and damage until you clear it. Your damage is still low and you offer no utility like in a raid, but most of it is so easy that no one will care.
Summary: Its a pretty kitten class outside of an Epi WvW build or a fully structured 5v5 team. Not much middle ground for this class. Its either you are broken or just flat garbage depending on what you wanna do. But of course, like with any game and any class, skill trumps most things. But again, when all things are equal, you are kitten by comparison. And lastly of course as well, if you find the class to be fun, no one should stop you from playing what you enjoy.

Actually Necro can compete as DPS, there is a benchmark out there of a necro doing 32k+ dps with realistic buffs. Granted most people won’t get those numbers, but it most definitely has better than just slightly better than mesmer dps.

You don’t use vamp siggy, you use the healy minion.
Also qtfy’s build page is messed up. The written description is for the old Viper horror build, but the benchmark numbers and the video are for the condi GS necro.

The problem is that the benchmark was done with the Necro chill field whirling inside the bosses hitbox. In a actual raid the necro will not have field priority because of all the fields getting dropped on the boss, so all of that dps that comes from the chilling bolts will not be there.
If Anet would change combo fields to prioritize the owner’s fields rather than the oldest field, Condi Necro would be instantly viable.

Most people aren’t going to come close to a classes top benchmark at any rate, regardless of profession.
The point is, that necro can complete for dps. No, it isn’t as easy as Daredevil or Dragonhunter, but that’s not my point either. If you are playing Reaper and are unable to keep up in DPS, it is a player issue more than a class issue.
With that said, I would love to see fields have a priority for the person who cast them, and it would make the class more seamless and easier to perform with.
WvW/Spvp,
Wether you play condi or power is irrelevant so long as you are bringing the boon corrupts. Necromancers are essentially required in both.
Only talking raids here (I dont know about PvP), as a commander my only problem with seing a necro join my party is.. how to say this nicely…. there is a high risk that its a “not skilled” player :/
I really hate saying this (And I also play necro myself both in and outside of raids), but there are alot of bad necro players. I “blame” it on minions and the necros tankyness. Many less skilled players pick up ranger or necro and use the minions/pet to tank while afk auto attacking.
That said, if its a good player, and I know there are planty of them, then necro will do good dmg, also in raids, and can easy take a dps spot.
But starting wherever there is a clear patch and moving in isn’t as practical as you think. You’d have to run back to that clear spot every time you RS4 or gravedigger. The time loss from such a technique means that you could never do the double gravedigger sub 50% because you’d lose too much time and the field would dissipate.
The other technique mentioned – retargeting when casting Executioner’s for better field control – costs you the damage of executioner’s which sub 50% and especially sub 25% is not something to overlook.
Of course all of those techniques are pointless if some ele air overloads on the boss, and of course space constraining boss mechanics also eliminate those techniques.
The fact of the matter is that field control is basically a extra raid mechanic in terms of complexity. Necromancer when going from golem to raid boss loses more DPS than any other class, and our golem dps was mediocre to begin with.
Meanwhile rangers do more DPS while playing one-handed and munching chips with the other.
The Necromancer class be it raids or sPvP requires 2x the effort for 1/2 the rewards.

Can you give me some tips or a source where I can actually learn to get a good Necro and what is important?
I mean gear ofc but when it comes to the pure skill of the player?
Would appreciate it very much!
But thanks for all of your nice answers anyway!
To give you a little help.
Increasing your Skill level :
- PvP:
(quiet good necro eu) : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCj-XQizU4oBtCc4yBck5emA/videos
The most important in PvP is to manage your skills … dont spam them, watch for enemy blocks/invulnurability/Resistance … deathshroud rotation is also important to survive as long as possible
… most important to reach higher ranks is to survive. Learn to jump on higher ground, hiding behind pillars so you cant be focused that easy and you are able to heal yourself without interrupt
- WvW:
there are tons of WvW-montages of necros on youtube.
you can play a tanky shout build or a high dmg well-build
when you play a tanky build you stay with the commander
when you play a high dmg build you try to stay in Skill range (600-900) to commander + avoiding enemy melee zerg/train.
- Lifeforce safes you from being killed in a millisecond. Positioning is really important.
- PvE:
For raids and Fractals you need more or less optimized builds and skill rotations
- example for builds and skill rotations are on metabattle.com
- Necro is no favorable class for raids, but it works, since you know how to maximize your dmg output.
- the problem with raids is that single target dmg is more important than area of effect dmg (aoe) and necro has great aoe dmg but not the highest single target.
- in PvE Death-/Reapershroud is just necessary to spam dmg and return to normal
